Research task
response to the brief
By Saskia Hutton
Which brief have you chosen and why?
The brief I have chosen is to make a print of a new
music magazine, including a front page, contents
and double page spread. I have chosen this task
rather than making a video because, I am hoping to
go into journalism in the future and I think this
would be great experience as well as having a lot of
interest in this brief. I enjoy reading magazines and
take interest in music. I prefer working
independently too, so this is the best activity for me
to complete. My skills are better suited to this task.
What are your initial ideas on what
you may produce?
My initial ideas on what I am going to produce is a
pop/chart music magazine. I am hoping to take
some good quality images of either a friend or
someone that is actually part of a band or is
associated with music in some way. I want to make
this magazine fun and exciting. For the double page
spread, I am thinking of interviewing people
involved in the music industry, or who are preparing
to go into the music industry. As well as including
articles on concerts and festivals.
Which genre have you chosen and
why?
The genre of music I have chosen is pop/chart. I
have chosen this genre as I think it is fun and a
lot of people within my age range listen to
mainly pop music, so I have a bit of experience
of ideas from reading other pop magazines and
speaking to my friends. It is also a popular music
genre, especially with young people which is
who my target audience is aimed at, so is the
most beneficial.
Consider target audience-what are
your initial thoughts on this?
My initial ideas and thoughts on target audience is
to be aimed at young people, preferably teenagers,
with age ranging from 14-17. Although boys may
have a slight interest in this sort of genre, I think
gender based my magazine will preferably be aimed
more at girls. I have chosen this target audience,
because I am within this age range so I have more
of an understanding what interests of these ages
are, with my own experience and from reading
existing magazines aimed at this target audience
too.
Are there any existing media texts that
are inspiring you?
From the age of around 14 I had started to read a pop
magazine called ‘we love pop’. This is inspiring me with my
genre, as it is based on pop music as well as what is in the
current charts and features interesting articles and interviews.
Although I am inspired by this magazine, I am hoping to create
more of a mature theme within my magazine, that will fit in
with ages from 14-17. As ‘we love pop’ I think is mainly aimed
at young teenagers. ‘Billboard’ is another inspirational
magazine that is based on chart magazine as well as pop. It
feature the top 100 in the charts, upcoming music festivals,
articles from popular celebrities in the music industry and
updates in current magazines of new musicians coming into
the music industry and producing new songs.
