  1. As you may know, SAP Scouting is a solution that we designed in close cooperation with the San Francisco 49ers.We spent hundreds of hours in design thinking sessions with their team, from their executives to their scouts. We refined our approach over and over. We built multiple prototypes of the product.…but when we first met with the Niners, they didn’t come to us and ask us to build them a scouting solution.They asked us to help them answer one simple question: How do we build the best team?
  2. …and as good questions often do, this led us to more questions. It led us to three questions, in fact, that seem to hold the key to building a better team.How can we evaluate talent better?That is, how can we get better as an organization at determining the value a player will have in making us a better team, given their abilities and our offensive and defensive strategies.How can we exploit situations where our valuation is different from the “street price” for a player?So, how can we understand not only our own roster and our needs as a team, but then also have that visibility across the league – so that we can identify players who may be undervalued on other teams that we can then go and acquire. Or understand which players on our roster are worth more to others, so we can then go and get something valuable from someone else in return for them.And then finally how can we better understand our cap situation and everyone else’s?So as I’m building my roster, and I understand which players will help me, and I understand what the going rate is for certain players, how much money and cap flexibility do I have versus the next guy as we enter into negotiations? Am I allocating my resources in the way that best drives my team’s success? And what will that picture look like 2 years from now? Or 5 years from now? And how will it change if I make this move or that move?
  3. So what we’ve been working on is building out a comprehensive set of solutions for teams that cover not only college scouting, but pro scouting, as well, and salary cap management.But where do you start?

Well, if we go back to that question of how you build the best team and start looking at how teams are built in the NFL these days and what brings the most success…We see that they’re built through the draft, through signing free agents, picking up rookie free agents and trades. But do you know or can you guess what percentage of a team’s starts (at all positions) are made by players acquired in each of these ways? Do you know what percentage comes from drafted players?(NOTE: A very small percentage is missing here. This is due to other transaction types, such as waiver pick-ups.)(Click to reveal the stats.) Almost 59% of a team’s starts come from players that they’ve drafted and another 8+ from rookie free agents, so over two thirds of a team’s starts are going to come from guys you’re bringing in from college.And it’s not just all teams, but if we look at winning teams over a 20-year span, we see a correlation between the teams that win and the teams that do the best job filling their roster with college talent.

So we started working, started looking at the challenges organizations face in college scouting – looking at how they can reduce the uncertainty and begin to consistently bring in more quality through the draft.And one of the first issues that we saw was that teams were bringing in a lot of information about prospects: scouting evaluations, measurables, video feeds, medical reports…But were they able to make any sense out of all that data in any kind of efficient way? Were they able to get everyone across the organization looking at the same information and then working collaboratively from the same information set?

So what we did is create SAP Scouting to be a solution that brings all that information your organization collects about each prospect to one place……creating player-centric data records that provide everyone throughout your organization with one unified view of each player……with embedded logic that makes sure that your people see the most important, up-to-date information (as defined by your organization) on each prospect at any moment in time.

And we make sure that we’re not only presenting the most important and up-to-date information, but that we’re also presenting it in context…….doing things like showing you how each player stacks up against existing players in the NFL at their position……and visualizing it in a way that’s easy to understand and tells you all you need to know with one glance.So here you can see some basic measurables for this player – and the color and size of the bars show you how many standard deviations above or below the NFL average this guy would be at his position.

We then help you collaborate around this information across your team, letting you see and compare individual evaluations and new measurements as soon as they come in.So if you’re at the Combine or a Pro Day and a player’s running their 40 in the morning, your team will have that information in hand when they go to meet that guy for an interview later in the afternoon.And then when you’ve seen a player a number of times, you’ll be able to easily see where your team agrees on an evaluation and where there are significant outliers.And with individual role-based permissions you can set for your organization, you can then have your GM or someone else you’ve designated go in and set the organizational grade for each player – creating your draft board.
  9. So it’s important for us that everyone throughout the organization can and does use this tool. That it’s simple and intuitive for the people in your organization – and that they like using it……because the value of a solution that no one uses is always zero.So we made a solution that people can pick up and start using from day one with hardly any training – and did extensive user testing behind that to prove it out.We built a solution that’s cloud-based, so people in your organization can access it from anywhere they’ve got a web browser – and we’re working to build out a native mobile client, as well, so they can use the solution even better while they’re on the go.
