For Global Services Partners – Development and Implementation
Provision environments in minutes to start development processes while customer choose or buy hardware or contract Azure. Deloitte tells us a typical SAP Project is on hold from 3-6 months due to HW delivery lead-times
Create or clone SAP environments for sandboxing or testing.
Stop Dev&Test environments when not in use, pay as u go. Savings of as much as 40-75% in hosting costs
For Certified Outsourcing Operations Partners – Operations and Managed Services
Increase datacenter capacity to serve new SAP projects and to free On-premise capacity. Flexibility to shift from capital to operation expenses
Avoid the need of invest on hardware / Co-location / Hosting. Azure cost Bachoco 1/3 of co-location costs the first year of running SAP on Azure (+hardware savings)
Provision training environments and delete when complete. Consistent training environment at lower costs
Archive historical system for auditing and governance. Savings of as much as 60% due to cheaper storage and the ability to quickly spin up systems based on need.
Here’s what SAP certification looks like as of today, plus very near term roadmap on SAP certification.
SAP has already certified SAP Business Suite, All-in-One and NetWeaver with Windows Server 2008 R2 or later and SQL Server 2008 R2 or later. SAP supports this combination for production use as of today. The Azure VM type that SAP certified is A5, with 2 CPU cores and 14GB RAM. SAP also supports SAP HANA Developer Edition on Suse Linux with Azure VM types of A7 and A8 with 8 cores and 56GB RAM or more.
It will be very soon for SAP to certify larger VM types from A6 to A9, and other major databases such as Oracle and SAP/Sybase ASE for SAP Business Suite, All-in-One and NetWeaver. Oracle is going to be 11g R2 patch set 3 (11.2.0.4) and supported OS will be Windows Server 2008 R2 SP1 or later. Oracle Data Guard will be supported.
SAP HANA One, HANA Enterprise Edition, SAP Business Objects and SAP/Sybase Mobile Platform will be certified by SAP very shortly.
Please make sure to use the Standard VM SKUs (A5 – A9). Basic VM SKUs (A0, 1, 2, 3, 4) are not supported.
One A5 Virtual Machine with 2 cores and 14 GB RAM has a capability to process 1,500 SAPS. This is so to speak 2-tier configuration. You can run multiple application servers to reach processing power of 12,000 SAPS. SAP will disclose SAPS number for A6, A7 and A9 once it certifies them.
Please take a look at licensing. SAP customers can bring their own SAP application licenses to Azure. As for SQL Server licenses, customers with software assurance of Enterprise Agreement or Volume Licensing can bring their SQL Server licenses to Azure as license mobility benefits. We are aware many SAP customers are currently using SQL Server runtime licenses purchased through SAP. As of today SQL runtime licenses cannot be brought into any public cloud solutions due to lack of license mobility. Please stay tuned as we’re working very hard to solve this issue with SAP very soon.

SAP Application Performance Standard (SAPS) is a hardware-independent unit of measurement that describes the performance of a system configuration in the SAP environment. It is derived from the Sales and Distribution (SD) benchmark, where 100 SAPS is defined as 2,000 fully business processed order line items per hour.
In technical terms, this throughput is achieved by processing 6,000 dialog steps (screen changes), 2,000 postings per hour in the SD Benchmark, or 2,400 SAP transactions.
SAP ABAP or Java Applications on SAP NetWeaver 7.0 or higher (Kernel ≥ 7.21 pl. 218 /7.21 EXT pl. 23)
