The lithium ion cells used in Samsung SDI’s Energy

Residential ESS is an energy-saving solution that can be
used to connect power grid and photovoltaic systems
to maximize energy savings. Storing solar energy in ESS
enhances self-consumption. This is especially beneficial
to the end-user in times of ever-rising electricity bill.
Additionally, home ESS provides emergency energy
power during power outage.
In an off-grid area, combination of ESS and photovoltaic
(PV) energy can supply sustainable electricity to
communities and facilities without heavy investment in
transmission and distribution (T&D). Also, other power
generation systems, such as diesel and gas turbines, can
be coupled with ESS to cover peak demands.
Samsung SDI offers 2.9 kWh and 7.2 kWh systems for
residential customers. They can be combined with solar
systems to maximize the amount of energy saved, and
efficiently manage energy consumption by using Home
Energy Management Solutions (HEMS).

As 4G service gains wider adoption in the telecom
industry, base transceiver stations (BTS) will need to
handle large data communications and higher speed
services. Lithium ion cells are more suitable for BTS
applications than lead acid batteries because they
are less costly to use and are capable of operating in a
broader range of temperature (0~40°C).
In addition, low maintenance requirements of Li-ion
technology make it ideal for remote or inaccessible BTS
sites. Moreover, with 6,000 cycles at 80% DOD, Samsung
SDI’s cell technology offers longer life than competing
lithium ion batteries.
When connected to a photovoltaic system, off-grid
BTS can cover large areas that the grid does not reach,
reducing operating costs.

With the rapid growth in cloud computing and internet
traffic, reliability and uptime are more critical than ever
for data center operations. Samsung SDI’s uninterruptible
power solution not only provides dependable back-up
power but also helps data center operators address total
power consumption.
Air conditioning systems account for approximately
40% of a data center’s total energy consumption and
the broad operating temperature of Samsung SDI Li-
ion battery technology helps reduce operating costs
by curbing the use of air conditioning in battery rooms.
Furthermore, lithium ion batteries offer significant
advantages in weight and energy density over lead acid
batteries which translates to lower real estate needs and
higher white space.
Designed for the standard 19 inch rack used by data
centers, Samsung SDI’s UPS battery is easy to install and
operate. Compared with lead acid based systems, total
cost of ownership is reduced thanks to lithium ion’s
superior cycle life and less maintenance. In addition,
Samsung SDI’s Battery Management System offers real-
time monitoring and control of the system’s functions
such as state of charge and state of health.
Samsung SDI has successfully deployed UPS lithium
ion systems in data center of Shinhan bank, a top rated
Korean bank, in 2012.
