Coffee originated in Ethiopia and was first cultivated for commercial purposes in Yemen and Egypt. The Dutch were the first to import coffee commercially and cultivated it in Java and Ceylon in the late 17th century. In 1822, the first espresso coffee machine was built in France. There are around 80 varieties of coffee grown for commercial purposes, with Arabica being the most widely cultivated and appreciated type due to its origins in Ethiopia. Robusta has a higher caffeine content than Arabica.
