3. Kongo Diffusion
Ivory, gold, silver, kola nuts, cloth and enslaved people were wanted from the rest of
the world from Africa. Swahili City States and Kongo were two African civilizations
that had changed through cultural diffusion due to trade. Swahili City states were
located on the East coast of Africa, where they traded many fascinating goods and
products through the Indian Ocean. During the MIddle Ages, they traded with Persia,
India, Arabia and other inland African countries. In the Great Zimbabwe, there was
gold located in the ground and Arabic traders ventured through the disasters of the
Indian Ocean, for example monsoons, so they could trade their knives for products
from ivory, gold, and slaves. The monotheistic religion of Islam was converting
people because of cultural diffusion and trade. Islamic traders brought their faith and
belief with them as they traded with the Swahili people. Soon... Show more content

The arrival of new seen and unseen culture, like new goods and enslaved people,
were some ways Kongo was affected by cultural diffusion. The Portuguese traded
china plates, guns and knives for enslaved people. The African Kingdom traded
with the Europeans because it was socially accepted and promoted. What the
African country didn t realize was that trading with the Portuguese would demolish
the country. It was estimated that by 1680, nearly one million enslaved africans
were taken by the Kongo region to be traded as slaves exploitation. In addition to
new goods through trade, christianity was also introduced to the Congolese people.
The Mani Kongo , who was the king of the region, was converted from the
Portuguese Missionaries. Not only did the missionaries convert the king, but as
well as his son, who later got baptized and given the first christian name, Affonso

4. Language And Society In South Africa
Of all the African countries, South Africa is typically considered the one most
connected to the English language. South Africa has quite a complex relationship to
English, and it provides an interesting study in sociophonology, the aspect of the
discipline of language study which focuses on differences of pronunciation which are
perceived as socially significant.
In order to understand the relationship between language and society in South Africa,
it is necessary to know some basic background information about the people who
make up the country. According to the 2011 South African census, 79.2% of the
population is Black African, 8.9% is Coloured, 8.9% is White, 2.5% is Indian or
Asian, and less than 1% is anything else. The ethnic label Coloured refers to South
Africans of mixed ethnic origin who possess ancestry from Europe, Asia, and
various Khoisan and Bantu tribes of Southern Africa. South Africa has eleven official
languages, making it third in the world s highest number of languages only to Bolivia
and India: Afrikaans, English, Ndebele, Northern Sotho, Sotho, Swazi, Tswana,
Tsonga, Venda, Xhosa, and Zulu. While all the languages are formally equal, some
languages are spoken more than others. According to the 2011 census, the three most
spoken first languages are Zulu (22.7%), Xhosa (16.0%), and Afrikaans (13.5%).
Zulu and Xhosa are, of course native African languages, while Afrikaans is an
offshoot of Dutch, developed by the Dutch settlers in South Africa over the
5. Seat Belts In Cars
Newton s first law says than an object at rest will stay at rest, and an object in
motion will stay in motion unless interrupted by a net force. This relates to seat belts
in cars because seat belts are used to stop people from being hurtled out of their cars.
They do this by abruptly stopping the person when the vehicleeither crashes or
brakes. Without seat belts, you couldn t break abruptly without being jerked
forward at the same speed in which your vehicle was traveling at. That means that if
you had to break abruptly or crashed after traveling at a fast speed, you would be
hurtled out of the window. But because seat belts add a net forceto stop us, then the
object in motion will start to rest. Newton s second law states that the acceleration
6. The Reggio Emilia Approach Essay
The Reggio Emilia Approach
Hailed by Newsweek (1991) magazine as the international role model for
preschools, the Reggio Emilia approach has caught the attention of early childhood
educators. In 1999, current Secretary of Education, Richard W. Riley visited the
schools in Reggio Emilia to better understand its benefits (Dunne, 2000). It s
principals are understood by only a few, however, and has limited following with
approximately 1200 Reggio inspired preschools in operation, most of them private
(Sipprelle, 2009), making the innovative ideas offered by this approach available to
only a few. Why have so few schools emulated those so successful in Reggio Emilia,
Italy? Is Reggio Emilia applicable in the American classroom? A look... Show more

The land was donated and so was the labor. Many of the materials were recycled from
the ruins created by the war (Source, 0000).
While there is no fixed curriculum or one specific model to emulate, the Reggio
Emilia approach does have some essential components, some fundamental ideas about
how children learn most effectively. The utmost is the idea that the young child is
inherently competent not only as a learner but as an initiator. The child has
preferences and opinions that have value and should be listened to with respect and
care, knowing that they have much to offer their classroom community and
community at large. This pedagogy plays a large role in shaping the Reggio
classroom. It allows the children to pursue projects which are interesting and
meaningful and then allowing adequate time to follow those projects with passion.
The Reggio Emilia approach is an emergent curriculum because it is developed and
shaped by the interests of the child, through negotiations between the child, parents
and teachers. This is done in a Reggio classroom by in large and small group projects
in which the children engage. The projects involve planning, hands on activities,
research, and representation through a variety of visual media. The observant teacher
collects documentation which is a vital component of the Reggio philosophy in the
form of written anecdotes, samples of children s work, photographs and videos. This
information is used to reflect on the
7. Gay Is the New Black in America
As I was browsing the internet I discovered this article (McWhorter, 2013) comparing
the gay community with the African American community. At first glance, I felt how
can the two be compared? So, I decided to give this article a read. The purpose of the
article was to bring attention to the civil rights movement of today dealing with the
homosexual community s civil rights and how it compares to the historic civil rights
movements made by the African Americancommunity from 1955 1968. In my mind
as an African American, my pride was not allowing me to see the comparison for
what it really was. African Americans have endured a longer, more violent time
frame of inequality than those of the gay community. This is how I see and feel it
to be. I had to do some more research to see exactly how this era s civil rights
movement became an understudy for comparison to the civil rights movements by
black Americans during the time span of 1955 1968. Us as African Americans need
to support the gay civil rights movements of today because we should understand
and realize the struggles we went through and help this nation become more equal.
Gay is the new black in America, not all aspects of the two relate such as the level of
violence endured by the African Americans as they fought to obtain equal rights but
the fight to be seen equal is the same.
The growth that the African American community has accomplished is a historic one
that the gay community wishes to achieve as well. Although
8. 19th Century Charity Dbq
During the nineteenth century charity was viewed as a way the rich could earn
salvation by caring for the less fortunate. Being apart of this group disabled people
were affected by the inequalities in the system. The growth of capitalism and
industrialization led to a change in family dynamics as more people were leaving
the home and working in factories and disabled people were in need of aid that
they had been receiving from the family. The wealthy controlled the conditions for
these workers entering the workforce and because welfare was paid for through
taxation it became a way of social control. The wealthy paid more taxes so
recipients of these charities were dependent on them. Any civil disobedience could
lead in less aide for disabled
9. Andrew Carnegie Rhetoric
Andrew Carnegie rose from a bobbin boy in a textile factory to become one of the
richest men in America. In the late 19th century, Andrew Carnegie was known as one
of the wealthiest Scottish American industrialist who basically ran the American steel
industry in the late 19th century. Some people believe that Andrew Carnegiewas a
philanthropist automatically means he s a Captain of Industry. However Andrew
Carnegie was a robber baron, and was wealthy for that exact reason.
In such manner, Andrew Carnegie treated his workers as such a robber baron would,
which is poorly and in dangerous conditions. Furthermore, Andrew Carnegie was
unsympathetic for his workers health seeing as he had put them in unhealthy and
dangerous conditions. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
However, this is inaccurate because he had treated his workers like they were
nothing, even putting them into the situation of dangerous conditions. There are
many more characteristics to a Captain of Industry but robbing companies, and
putting your workers in dangerous conditions is not one of them. Yes, the men call
this the deathtrap he repeated my guide; ... they wipe a man out here every little
while.... Sometimes a chain breaks, and a ladle tip over; and the iron explodes like
that.... Sometimes the slag falls on the workmen from the roadway up there (Page
357). He fools other people with his donations making it seem like he is captain of
industry when in reality he also put people in dangerous conditions and pay them
not enough for it. He doesn t help his workers enough with the wages and
dangerous conditions. His workers not being the only evidence of him not being a
captain of industry. A man watches out, why, all right! But you take it after they
ve been on duty for twelve hours without sleep, and running like hell, everybody
tired and logy and it s a different story (Page 357). Andrew Carnegie was someone
who put his workers in the kind of danger that any day one of the workers can get
trampled or killed by one of the machines especially since they are tired from
working long hours. Andrew Carnegie had no kind heart, nor cared for his workers
instead he was inconsiderate and selfish, he was only for himself and money, which
do not display a Captain of Industry nor a
10. Essay about Leaving Las Vegas
Leaving Las Vegas, directed by Mike Figgis and based on the autobiographical
novel by John O Brien, is an emotional story about an alcoholic who rejects life and
wants to drink himself to death in Las Vegas, and an unselfish prostitute who loves
him the way he is. Ben, played by Nicholas Cage, was a formermovie producer in
Los Angeles and has obviously crumbled in the glamour world of Hollywood which
is shown in the opening scene. Here Ben is already an alcoholic when he disturbs
former colleagues that are embarrassed of his appearance at the restaurant. Ben is
unstable and a mess when one of the men give him money and tell him not to contact
him again. Ben then gets fired and ultimately decides to drink himself to death in Las

The director mainly used eye level shots, to leave it up to the audience to judge the
two main characters of the movie, although certain power struggles in the film are
shown from high angles to illustrate someone dominating a conversation or argument.
Figgis also uses some point of view shots to show the imbalance during Ben s
drunken periods where the camera is placed at an oblique angle to show tension and
approaching movements. The images in the film are in high contrast with streaks of
blackness and harsh shafts of light to underline the dramatic events that occur.
When it comes to the editing, Figgis mainly used cutting to continuity to preserve
the fluidity of most events without the necessity to show them all. The director
also uses flash forwards a few times to give you an idea about the destiny of Sera,
which is shown when she reflects about her encounter with Ben to an invisible
therapist. Figgis also shot the movie using Super 16mm film to give it a tense,
documentary feel. The music is also very unique because the jazzy soundtrack isn t
the usual music in a movie with such an emotional and dramatic plot. The actors
have a great impact on the success of this movie because the extremely difficult
roles were played by excellent actor stars. The story is done very well because it
starts off showing us the situation of the two main characters as they are and as the
will be throughout

Finding the Characters in The Crucible Sympathetic
Arthur Miller s The Crucible , portrays the hysteria created in a paranoid society that
is pent up with vengeance and retribution, when
the balance within a community begins to turn towards greater individual freedom .
When discussing this play we must look at the audience s awareness of the parallels
between the period when the play is set and the time when it is written. The initial
audience of the
1950 s would be aware of the paranoia in Salem and the persecution of people who
value their morals. However audiences today are aware of the double paranoia
created by the clear parallels between the witch trials and Arthur Miller s personal

Then under the care of her uncle,
Parris, during her employment at the Proctor s household, she fell in love and had an
affair with John Proctor. However her love was unrequited, despite misguided
impressions that John loved her. These dire events in Abigail s life led to her
manipulative, selfish yet desperate nature and this nature is what empowered
Abigail to cry witch . Miller s portrayal of Abigail endears with her language
displaying hysteria, power, love, and the harsh reality of her childhood, all of which
were factors empowering her to impel the trials. These factors are demonstrated in
both the dialogue and the stage directions accompanying them. Abigail undoubtedly
displays hysterical qualities, without them her imagination alone could not have
capacitated such a dramatic ploy. This is shown particularly in Act 3. For example
her being in genuine conversation with the bird , But god made my face; you cannot
want to tear my face. The stage directions often dictate that she is transfixed , open
mouthed , frightened eyes creating the sense that she truly believes what is
happening to her.
Abigail is a powerful girl, clever and even manipulative . Her part in the trials is
apparently unsympathetic due to her adopted role as the leader of the girls i.e. the
witnesses. This power is demonstrated through her authoritative short, sharp, to the
point sentences when addressing the girls, Now look you. All of you. , We danced. ,
12. Advantages And Disadvantages Of Aops
In most of the AOPs a combination of these oxidation effects occur. In FentonВґs
reagent for example; Fe(II) is used as a catalyst, in the process Fe(II) is brought to
the other oxidation state of Fe(III), in this process OH* radicals are formed that are
able to completely mineralize organic compounds. It is clear from the standard redox
potential data that hydroxyl radicalis the strongest known oxidant (2.06 V), second
to fluorine (2.23 V) (Table 1). Therefore, the complete mineralization of most of the
organic matters is possible, when the hydroxyl radicals are the main oxidizing
species in the solution. This is one of the major advantages of AOPs, since other
chemical oxidation processes mostly lead to partial oxidation of the target
compounds, ant thus, the generation of new hazardous compounds is possible. The
other advantage of AOPs is the generation of neglible amounts of residues and their
applicability, in case of very low... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The use of ultrasound technology is shown to be very promising for the degradation
of persistent organic compounds in wastewater as it is proven to be an effective
method for degrading organic effluent into less toxic compounds. The advantages of
this technology include potential chemical free and simultaneous oxidation,
thermolysis, shear degradation, enhanced mass transfer processes together etc.
Overall, sonochemical oxidation uses ultrasound to produce cavitation phenomena,
which is defined as the phenomena of the formation, growth and subsequent collapse
of microbubbles, releasing large magnitude of energy, and induces localized extreme
conditions. The sonochemical destruction of pollutants in aqueous phase generally
involves several reaction pathways such as pyrolysis inside the bubble and hydroxyl
radical mediated reactions at the bubble liquid interface and/or in the liquid
13. Nietzsche Chapter 17
Jonathan Liddle
Chapter 17 Essay Friedrich Nietzsche begins with a proposition that there are only
two basic types of morality Slave morality and Master Morality. These types of
moralities that Nietzsche proposes were initially formed when society was actually
made up of masters and slaves. In society masters were completely free and slaves
simply did whatever their masters said. Based on their respected situations Nietzsche
argues these groups of people came up with two very different types of morality. Of
course there are no longer any literal masters and slaves in todays society, however
Nietzsche proposes while master and slaves no longer exist, the moral systems they
came up with do. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
If you re a slave then your entire life is dominated by your master, everything you
do is for him/her. Clearly in this position as a slave, you will come to resent your
master, in fact you will come to resent your master so much that you will begin to
think of your master as evil and everything that she values is equally evil. Moral
evil enters the picture in slave morality as a form of resentment for the master and
everything the master values things like courage, pride, nobility and bravery. So if
slave morality gets off the ground by thinking about the evil master, then where
does goodness come into the picture for slave morality? The slave will think about
it like this, evil is the opposite of goodness, I am the opposite of the master and the
master is evil. Therefore, it must be good to be a slave. Moral goodness in other
words means being a good slave. For instance, a good slave is humble, never draws
attention to himself, so it must be morally good to be humble. A good slave is also
blindly obedient. Does whatever he is told without questioning. Therefore, blind
obedience must be a good
14. Introduction. Eduardo Bonilla Silva Is A Professor At Duke
Introduction Eduardo Bonilla Silva is a professor at Duke University where he
teaches sociology. In his work, Bonilla Silva focuses on what he refers to as the new
racism. The main postulate of this theory is that, instead of overt racism, which was
the predominant social form in the 20th century for example the Jim Crow laws
modern society switched to a covert form of racismshielded under the guise of color
blind, market led society. Under this theoretical framework, it is argued that whites
do not engage in racism in an overt way, but rather exert their dominance through
ignoring the issues within the minority groups and focusing only on the current
social and political dogma. Patricia Hill Collins is a pioneer of Black Women s...

Eduardo Bonilla Silva on racism The elementary emphasis of Bonilla s work is
focused around race and ideology within the frame of the society in the United States.
Bonilla identifies the historical lines through which the construct of the modern
liberal society was created, and which, under the pretext of liberty and justice created
injustice and suffering to numerous minority groups, both in the United States and in
Europe. Through the plight of the Native Americans, Black slaves, Mexicans, Asians
and other minorities, Bonilla Silva paints a picture of the atrocities committed in the
name of the liberal nation state (Bonilla Silva, 2010).
Going to the not so distant past, Bonilla Silva argues that the Jim Crow laws only
fortified the idea that white society is the only one that actually means something,
and that the African Americans suffer from innate flaws, citing genetic and moral
inferiority, which was the main cause for their second class status in society. From
this, he argues, the modern state, and the predominant social group, white, draws its
quasi legitimacy and the current status quo in terms of racial relations, wherein the
minorities exist in a make believe system of null oppression, mainly due to the fact
that they are extended the same economic opportunities (in the view of the liberal
state) as others (Bonilla Silva, 2010).

An Engineered Wonder of the World This bridge needs neither praise, eulogy nor

Nature rent asunder long ago, man has joined today. This is a quote from Joseph
Strauss, the engineer that designed the Golden Gate Bridge. The Golden Gate
Bridge is truly a piece of engineering excellence. It stretches for almost 9,000 feet
over the San Francisco Bay, in San Francisco, California. The bridge has faced
many problems during the designing process, construction, and even to this day it
produces controversy. The final result of the bridge, however, is an amazing

the Golden Gate Bridge was ready to be built. To continue, it was January 5th,
1933, when construction officially started on the bridge. The two anchorages of
the bridge were the first parts to be built. The first of the two to be built was on the
San Francisco side of the bay. The other on the Marin side of the bay. The San
Francisco tower access trestle was then started. It extended for more than 1,000
feet off shore. Unfortunately, a major setback was met on August 14, 1943. On
this date, a steamship crashed into the access trestle, and damaged almost 400 feet.
The repairs were not completed for another four months. Then to make matters
worse, the trestle was battered again, but for 800 feet of damage this time. Another
four months were needed for these repairs. Next up was the Marin tower. As
previously stated, suspension bridges have two towers, and this was the first of the
two built. There were no problems faced in the construction of the tower, and it was
completed in about a year. The San Francisco tower was built next. Then the cables
were put on, and finally on November 18th, 1936, the two sections of the bridge
were joined in the middle. After this, the roadway was finally put in. On

the Honduran people are finding their way to America. Hundreds of thousands of
Hondurans are migrating each year to America. This is crippling the economy

19. The Pros And Cons Of Drinking Age
In all fifty states in the United States of America, the legal drinking age for people
is 21 years old. Many people in the country and people from other countries ask the
question, why is it so excessive as opposed to most countries in the world where
the standard is 18 years old? There is a multitude of different reasons behind this
including the Mothers Against Drunk Driving, and many other groups having
heavy influences along with political parties which influence lawmaking in the
country. Alcohol can lead to fun parties, meeting great people, experiencing
everything life has to offer but also has a dark side. Drinking can also have serious
consequences; for example, when I was still in high school I knew these two girls
and at a party, I swear half of the school was at, they were drunk but told everybody
they could drive. These girls hit a tree going 40 mph and both died and from what
people told me they weren t even that drunk. To prevent this type of incident from
happening in 1984, President Ronald Reagan passed the Minimum Drinking Age
Act which raised the minimum drinking age to 21 or suffers a 10% cut in federal
highway funding. This act was made to prevent the sale and consumption of any
form of alcohol to anybody under the age of 21. The people who stand to gain the
most from a lower drinking age are individuals who work for alcohol involved
companies such as, actual alcohol manufacturing breweries, bars, nightclubs, and
even restaurants. One industry

where he had a contract until June 30th, 1990. When R.F.C. de Liege offered

in France, USL Dunkerque, expressed interest in signing the player and both teams

1293). Bosman also took legal action against UEFA, the European Football
Association, to the European Court of Justice in an attempt to invalidate UEFA s
gentlemen s agreement . The gentlemen s agreement, also known as the 3 plus 2
rule, allowed domestic leagues to set their own maximum number of foreign
players that a particular club could have. The 3 plus 2 rule states that only three
foreign players and two foreign players who had been in the country for more than
five years could play on the field at the same time for a club in domestic matches.
In April 1992, the Belgian Court of Justice declared no legal consequences for the
suit, so Bosman decided to drop the charges against his club and the Belgian league
in order to develop a new claim against UEFA. In his new claim, he stated that the 3
plus 2 rule and European transfer system breached the Articles 48, 85 and 86 of
the Treaty of Rome, and they should be considered null and voided. (Lee, 1995) On
December 15th, 1995 the European Court of Justice finally reached a verdict and
the transfer market in European football was changed forever. According to Case C
415/93, The European Court of Justice ruled that it was illegal for clubs to stop
players from moving clubs once their contracts have expired. The European Court of
Justice also banned the restrictions that a club could have on the number of players
that belong to the European Union. Before the rule was established, clubs had the

to the pitch. If it helps then make a sign that says: No is not personal and post it
where you can see it. A no is nothing more than a hash mark on your calling score
card, and a notation on your call list. A lot of the response will depend on how you
ask. Think if this simple example. I walk up to you and ask if you could tell me the
time. The answer you give makes no difference in the point I am trying to make. The
question itself is neutral, easy to accept/understand and poses no threat. You would
tell me the time. Or, you might say you were sorry as you did not... Show more

I make sure they hear my name. If they ask me I want them to recognize me when I
call back. All these responses help single you out above the sales and donation
calls. The individual often relaxes as if to be lowering the weapons. This opens the
communication up so you feel your message is being heard. In this posture the call
can be very productive. Even if you are not hired. You have to determine when it is
appropriate to accept the first no, or not. If you feel you do not need to try once
more then close the conversation. If you keep the conversation in a relaxed casual
mode they will keep your information and might refer you to others. If you feel it
might be to your advantage to ask one more time, then do so. Just make sure the
second time you ask is as relaxed and comfortable as the first. So, the question then
becomes how to respond and ask once again. It might prove helpful to use the feel,
felt, found approach. Feel: You acknowledge that you can understand how the
individual feels. Felt: You mention that he is not alone. A lot of others have felt the
same. Found: You round it off with a positive statement Mr. Rogers, I understand how
you feel. Many organizations have felt the same way. They view their trade show

22. Keep Music Education in Schools Essay
Due to the declining economy, school boards around the country have decided to
cut funding to the music education programs. It is necessary to keep music
education in the American school system because it enhances the development of
skills that children will use for the rest of their lives. Musical development can
start as early as before birth. Hearing is the first sense that a baby acquires and it is
acquired in utero (McCutcheon 1). The first sounds that a baby hears are the mother
s voice and her heartbeat (McCutcheon 1). These sounds are familiar to babies after
they are born, which is why recordings of heartbeats are used to calm them
(McCutcheon 1). After birth, a baby s sense of hearing becomes sharper and they

Younger children can experience musicby hearing it, feeling it, and by experimenting
different pitches in their vocalizations (National Association for Music Education 2).
Adults can encourage musical development in infants by singing to them, exposing
them to different selections of music, and discussing music and its relations with
expression and feeling (National Association for Music Education 2). Music can be
encouraged by parents in different ways. Jim McCutcheon says, We decided to play
classical guitar music for him [unborn son] in utero through headphones placed on
her abdomen, and he came into the world very familiar with guitar sounds, and this
began a lifelong enjoyment of guitar music! It is very common to hear of mothers
playing or listening to music while pregnant and it is evident that the child heard and
remembered the music (McCutcheon 2). After birth and through childhood, children
can learn musical elements through fingerplays like eensy weensy spider and by
singing songs and being bounced on a parent s knee (McCutcheon 2). John
Feierabend says, Over the last 100 years, these two methods of interacting with
children have disappeared from our music culture. During ages 6 18 months, the
dendrites in the brain are the most responsive to stimulation (McCutcheon 2). Lee

25. Alexander Wendt s Teleological Theory
My first theorist critique will focus on Alexander Wendt and his teleological theory
on the logic of anarchy which holds that a world state, through a monopoly on the
use of organized violence, is inevitable. Wendt s theory can be housed under
explanatory progressivism which in turn yields itself to comparative analysis against
the broader foundational theories of realism. and liberalism, and contingent
progressivism. Given the teleological identity Wendt assigns his assertion, we will
also find relevance in examining the connections with self organization theory. This
paper will open with a summary of the logic of anarchy , the inevitability of a world
state, and will then flow into the comparative analysis mentioned above. The

All real world change or dynamics is seen to follow, or be motivated, by this law.
The first law of thermodynamics is meant to identify and explain that which
remains the same, and thereby, the second law is meant to observe and explain
that which is in a state of change or causes change. A useful example is If a glass
of hot liquid, for example is placed in a colder room a potential exists and a flow of
heat is spontaneously produced from the cup to the room until it is minimized (or the
entropy is maximized) at which point the temperatures are the same and all flows
stop. Taking this basic framework and applying it to the International relations
system, we can see that perhaps Wendt is correct in assuming that a one world state
is indeed inevitable, but incorrect in his statement that it will be a peaceful and less
competitive one world

27. Annie Dillard s An Exploration Into The Way Human Beings
At some point in each of our lives we will take a step back and look at the way we
are living our lives and wonder if we are living them correctly. This is exactly what
annie dilliard does in this essay.
Annie Dillard s essay is just an exploration into the way human beings might live.
When she sees a weasel, she looks into the life of that weasel. Studying how it lives
its life. Then she compares it to humans. Human beings are creatures of caution and
fear. We never fully live our lives because we are too caught up with avoiding risks.
We think, debate, and calculate each and every move while weasels just simply act.
A weasel is a creature of action and instinct. A weasel lives its life the way it was
created to, not questioning his motives, simply striking when the time is right. I agree
with Dillard s idea that we might learn something of mindlessness, something of the
purity of living in the physical senses and the dignity of living without bias or motive
(Dillard 210).
The thing that keeps human beings from living the purest life possible, like the
weasel is our minds. To live freely we need to live our lives with less hesitation and
fear. Dillard says we should forget our ability of thought and choice all together. But
the way we live should not be simply thrown away for a chance to live completely
free of bias or motive (Dillard 210). We have our morals, conscience, emotions, and
values. We have the ability to think and feel at the same time. We can chose how

How Technology Affects the Human Body
In the late 1880 s Heinrich Hertz discovered radio frequency waves, this is where the
matter of discussion begins (NASA). A 2010 Kaiser conducted study concluded that
children in elementary school on average use technology up to 7.5 hours per day, 75%
of t which have televisions in their bedrooms and are found to have decreased
attention spans. The average office job worker spends 7 hours per day on a computer
(Holmes, 2013).The 21st century is in the midst of a technological revolution,
technology is becoming an essential to day to day life. As technology positively
influences aspects such as medical development, and environmental solutions, it also
potentially causes harm to health. Millennials spend much time on their technological
devices, however don t consider the effects. Cellular devices and technologies are
potentially dangerous, as addiction affects human development.Technologies
radiation effects are being researched and concluding that physical development is
being negatively impacted by technology.
The common addiction to technology causes vision problems and eventually causes
what eye professionals call Computer Vision Syndrome (Soltan, 2016). Effects of
this diagnosis include eye strain, which is when pupil size decreases and eye
muscles adjust... and the eyes are forced to intersect (Chan, 2011), tension headaches
which are caused by muscle spasms in the temples, and dry

Gambling
In today s world, there are many different ways to gamble such as casinos, state
lotteries, pull tabs, bingo, sporting events, and the internet, just to name a few.
Although the popularity of this activity remains strong in America, there are
individuals and groups that continue to scrutinize and attack this industry. People
strongly opposed to gambling would like to see it policed by the federal government
or outlawed completely; they are wrong. There are several positive aspects of
gambling aside from providing entertainment and a social interaction. Gambling is
not immoral or unethical. Gambling provides economic benefits including jobs
and reduced government assistance. The gaming industry supports research and
education related to gambling addiction. The percentage of lower income people
who gamble is small; the majorities of people who gamble are those with higher
incomes and can afford to do so. Lastly, gambling has been a part of history and
different cultures dating back to ancient times. In addition, the percentages of
those in favor of gambling are significantly higher than those that are opposed. To
restrict or prohibit gambling is wrong and insulting to adults in today s world. It is
an individual s right to decide if he or she should gamble based on his or her own
personal beliefs. There is a moral component to be considered. Some would argue
that gambling is morally wrong and a threat to public virtue. This is not true, based

31. Difference Between Modern Building And Modern
Architecture
One of the most interesting questions to ask is why do buildings look the way the
do, or rather why do buildings of a particular function have a certain form? Now
firstly not all buildings with the same function have the same form, but many
buildings have a certain form which make them instantly recognizable to those who
interact with them. Specifically in respect to the Greek templethey usually took a very
distinct form with a columnar facade, and an inner cella. This allowed the people of
antiquity to interact with any temple in a way that would be familiar to them. While
it is difficult to find a modern comparison to the Greek temple that in any way reflects
the weight behind the temple, the modern skyscraperoffice building provides and
interesting subject to examine. The function of the two buildings is entirely
different, and it would make sense to thus compare the Greek temple with a modern
religious building. However, the physiological effect of the form of the modern
skyscraper has a much similar effect to what the Greek temple would have had in
antiquity. The differing thought processes behind modern buildings and the temples
of ancient Greece are extremely interesting to examine. One of the first subjects to
look into is the building materials. Traditionally Greek Temples were built out of
limestone, or in rare occasions marble (43 RatteМЃ). Stone is an extremely strong
and durable material as clearly demonstrated by the ruins that are left even after

32. How Gender Dysphoria Is The Opposite Sex Essay

We are all given a choice on whether we would prefer to be bi sexual, gay, dress as
the opposite sex, or be in no romantic relationship at all. These are ideas that have
been displayed to us and most possibly thought it would be interesting to explore, or
simply felt as though this is how it was meant to be. Gender dysphoria has been
around much longer than individuals would think. The only difference now is that
more people are accepting of this lifestyle, and a greater amount of human beings
are opened to sharing about it. Gender Dysphoria is simply where an individual
who feels very strongly that they are not the gender they appear to be. It is
possible that a man would rather portray his life as a woman by dressing as one,
and acting as one. This will give him a purpose of feelings and life. A woman
would rather dress as a man, and resemble the life of a man also. There are many
individuals; such as parents, friends, and relatives who question this and ask if it s
just a phase? As you read my paper, we can determine if Gender Dysphoria is just a
phase or the actual reality. I want to start off by saying that Gender Dysphoria was
formerly known as Gender Identity Disorder. The classifications of being considered
to have gender dysphoria today would be that an individual would have to display a
heavy and constant desire to cross gender. Typically, with younger children this
feeling is shown by
33. School Based Mentoring Programs ( Sbmp )
School based mentoring programs (SBMP) have become widely used due to their
presumptuously simple implementation and effective results; however, they remain
to be scientifically under developed and require integrity during implementation
(Miller et al., 2013; Smith Stormont, 2011). Undoubtedly, SBMP have been shown to
improve students: attitudes, confidence, school engagement, school performance,
behaviour, vocational skills, and emotional and social skills (Converse Lignugaris
/Kraft, 2009; Miller et al., 2013; Schwartz, Rhodes, Herrera, 2012). Contrarily, these
promising outcomes are equally met with many studies that show: no, or only little,
improvements; only short lived results; or only effectiveness with certain types of
students (Converse Lignugaris/Kraft, 2009; McQuillin, Smith, Strait, 2011; Miller et
al., 2013).
A major understanding that many program designers seemingly fail to comprehend is
that SBMP are not general purpose programs. Thus, many SBMP are not designed
and implemented strategically. Particularly problematic for these poorly designed
programs are: the lack of defined success outcomes, measurements of success being
open to biases, the ambiguous and faulty evaluations of such programs, and the
individual program s diversity of standards, budgets, objectives, and implementation
(Converse Lignugaris/Kraft, 2009; Gusic et al., 2010; Schwartz, Rhodes, Herrera,
2012; Smith Stormont, 2011). Evidently, the difficulty of replicating the

When looking over the criminal cases that we, as a class, have evaluated over the
past six weeks the one instance that I have found the most interesting is that of the
case of Corker v. Georgia, 433 U.S. 584, (1977),. The reason that I find this case
interesting is that it evaluates the use of the death sentence in the United States for
crimes that are not related to murder(Brody and Acker, 2010). I have always been
interested in cases involving the death sentence, and its effect on deterrence to

35. The Body And Identity Of Afro Descendant Women
Body identities and transformation: the struggles to belong
Stereotypes and negative prejudice related to the body and identity of afro descendant
women have generated over dimensionality of their sexuality, affecting their relation
with the rest of the population and with afro descendant men.
To explain the process of construction of beauty standards, Markowtksy talks about
how the hierarchy system can establish different dominance relations. Thus, there has
been established relations between sex/gender, between different races, and between
women and men from different races. Since these relations have been created and
modified by the western/European world, they have also been influenced by the
theories of race and mestizaje that also affected the portrayals of colonized women,
defining beauty as a standard that expressed both desirability and racial superiority.
This establishment of beauty standards, however, adapted to be able to consider
colonized women as desirable in a sexual way, but at the same time, they were not
related to the ideals of a good woman , a capable woman with an intellectual value
that can be adequate to domestic environments, reinforcing social differences.
Beauty standards, then, determine what is adequate and what is not, which facial
features are perfect and which will never meet the requirements. They decide what is
sexy, which body woman should seek to have, and supported by the media, they are
installed as a mechanism of social control that

researched her life to seek what this poem might have meant to her at the time it

in her life, the poem suddenly seems to make more sense. Elizabeth Bishop, born
on the 8th of February in 1911, had to accept her father s death early in life before
her first birthday. At the tender age of five, she had to endure the suffering of her
mother being ripped from her life due to a series of nervous collapses, leading her

The art of losing isn t hard to master. (4 6) We have all lost our keys at one point
and have wasted an hour of our time that we will never get back. According to the
Bishop, losing these frivolous things isn t hard to master (6). I have also taken
notice that this phrase, the art of losing isn t hard to master , is used to almost
convince and assure oneself that this statement is true. Elizabeth Bishop quickens
up the pace of the poem and takes it a bit further. In the beginning, she discussed
losing trivial objects, such as keys. In the third quatrain, she mentions far more
significant matters, such as places and names. Then practice losing farther, losing
faster: places, and names, and where it was you meant to travel. None of these will
bring disaster. (7 9) We have all come across a time where we fail to remember
names of certain people or even places we have been to in the past. Many of us
have even experienced losing an opportunity due to our hectic schedules. Bishop
contends, none of these will bring disaster (9). It seems as if though Bishop is
attempting to, once again, persuade herself and the readers that despite the
circumstances, these losses should have no control over one s life. Although
everyone is aware that often times, enduring the pain of a loss can be extremely
tragic and difficult to overcome.

all sides. Most arguments are biased and others lack efficient sources or credibility to
obtain a reasonable conclusion. This paper will dissect all angles of the meaningful
arguments and help develop a conclusion on the aspects of mountain top removal
mining and its effects to its surrounding environments. Who has measured the waters
in the hollow of His hand, Measured heaven with a span. And calculated the dust of
the earth in a measure? Weighed the mountains in scales, And the hills in a balance?...

Parks and recreation areas have been developed at many former sites where
mountain top removal mining had been in service. A little more than half of all
former sites have been transformed to recreation areas. And in most of those cases
the mining companies that control the property pay for those areas (Gardner). Not
all of the areas have been transferred to recreational areas. Other areas have been
converted to land fills, industrial plants, and, roads and bridges. It is estimated that
the mountain top removal mining companies have contributed over 50 billion
dollars developing these projects and cleaning the sites since 1980. In September
2010, Gregory H. Boyce, President and C.E.O. Of Peabody Energy, released a plan
to eliminate energy poverty and inequality by unlocking the power of coal to advance
energy security, generate economic stimulus and create environmental solutions.
(Sutton) As long as mountain top removal mining continues, owners vow to take the
proper steps to clean up and redevelop these projects these former mountain top
removal mining sites for the local residents. Over time, due process should give more
insight to the controversy. Even though both sides present great arguments, time
should be well managed to define what measures should be taken to deal with all
aspects of mountain top removal mining. Most of the debate seems like common
sense on both sides. The economic impact is huge for the
45. Aneurin Bevan Research Paper
In 1945, The new Labour government came in on a manifesto that promised a
revolution in health care. A health minor was a minor job and was classed as being
below cabinet rank, but now it was to be filled by a major politician Aneurin
Bevan, he was the adored charismatic leader of the Labour left. Bevan s ambition
was to build health service that would follow his 4 principles; it was to be free at
the point of delivery, available to everyone who needed it, paid for out of the general
taxation and used responsibly. Unquestionable when look at the state of the health
service t the time but there was furious opposition from the doctors, consultants and
the Conservative party. Bevan was great when the Labour led London Country
Council, surrendered its hospitals without a fight (McSmith,2008). The creation of
the NHS was influenced by William Beveridge in 1942 with his report to defeat...

Hill argued that that funding should come from insurance not taxation. It was
thought the in the first months of the NHS people rushed and queued in fear the
Hill would get his way and the free treatment would no longer be available. Bevan s
best enemy was Sir Bernard Docker a wealthy industrialist, Sir Bernard was
chairman of the clutch of private firms, and spoke for the management for the
private hospitals (NHS choices,2015). One of the fears that the Conservatives had
was that poor people would abuse the free treatment ad strip the chemist shops.
Spending over the first year overshot the budget, so the prime minister Clement
Attlee, went onto the radio to pled with people not to overburden the service. The
expense brought Bevan s Ministerial career to a premature end, in 1951 a new
Labour chancellor was appointed. Hugh Gaitskell introduced the prescription charges
breaching one of Bevan s principles that care must be free (NHS
46. Analysis Of The En Plein Air Paintings By William Cullen...
During the 19th century, the en plein air paintings were introduced to many artists.
Since thatпјЊnatural light became particular important to the Hudson River School.
Also, art and literature were constantly entwined, such as American Romanticism.
Significant individuals became familiar with one another s work, resulting in
inspiration that led to creative works that pay homage to another artists work. For
instance, Asher Brown Durand s Landscape Scene From Thanatopsis was inspired by
the romantic poet William Cullen Bryant, whose work was influenced by the
multifaceted cultural creations. Both Bryant and Durand investigated the themes of
men, nature, individualism, and the inner and after lives. Through detailing natural
elements that emphasized the life cycle, Durand created literary art by paying
tributed to Bryant s Thanatopsis . Asher Brown Durand was an American painter, one
of the founders of the Hudson River Schoolof landscape paintings. He was born in
1796, New Jersey, USA. He died in 1886. He used to be an engraver. He illustrated
gift books and annuals, and engraved a popular series of 72 portraits of antemproary
Americans. In 1840, he visited Europe to study the works of old masters. After he
returned, he went to Adirondack Mountain with Thomas Cole to do the en plein air
painting. Because of this experience, it changed the rest of Asher s life. He changed
into painting creative. Under the influence of his fellow artists, Durand turned more

3. How do you think the principle of uniformitarianism accounts for occasional
catastrophic events such as meteorite impacts, huge volcanic eruptions, or great
earthquakes?
The principle of uniformitarianism states the processes occurring on Earth today are
very similar in manner as those throughout much of geologic times. In other words
the present is the key to the past. (Murck, B. W., Skinner, B. J., amp; Mackenzie, D.
(2010)). When looking at past geological events and occurrences that happened in the
past with additions of new testing and technology they can predict when and if
volcanic eruptions may occur, ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

3. How old are the rock formations in the area where you live and attend college or
university? How can you find out the answer to this question?
I live and attend college in the Valley of the Sun. Many of the rock formations here
are extremely old dating back nearly 2 billion years during a time period geologists
called the Precambrian Period (GeoHistory). Information to answer this question can
be found in news articles, biology journals, historical websites, and government and
educational readings as well.
4. Choose one of the geologic periods or epochs listed in Figure 3.8 and find out all
you can about it: How are rocks from that period identified? What are its most
characteristic fossils? Where are the best samples of rocks from your chosen period
found?
Rocks formed during the cretaceous period are identifiable in more ways than one
would think. The cretaceous period occurred at the end of the Mesozoic Era. Rocks
such as limestone, basaltic, clays, salts, gypsum, sandstone, conglomerates, and
shale s were found during this time period (Cretaceous Period). Sedimentary rocks
hold many fossils of the predominant organisms to inhabit the planet Earth
dinosaurs. Many of the rocks can be identified by the variation in their lithological
character and thickness of their sequences, or by the fossils that are discovered in
them. Some of the best samples of rocks from this time period can be found right
here in Arizona at the

Military men are just dumb stupid animals to be used as pawns in foreign policy. The
past century has shown us the atrocious influence of military power on global
politics, but now for many states, the sense of fear is derived from economic power.
Through increased globalization and interdependence of trade, multinational
corporations (MNC) impact on global politics has undoubtedly strengthened. In the
peripheral world, poverty is still prevalent. It not exclusive to the fact that they don t

This is brought to you by the decline of trade tariffs, in which corporations are
increasingly taking advantage of. They are looking overseas to outsource for cheap
foreign labour and new markets. Developing countries openly welcome MNCs to
their countries with expectations of employment and economic growth. They try to
persuade the MNCs by offering incentives such as tax breaks, government subsidies
and lax regulations. MNCs also negatively impact countries, especially those with a
weak economy and fragmented society rather than those with a balanced economy
and stable government. Out of the one hundred largest economies in the world, fifty
one of them are composed of corporations and the rest, countries. Our world today
has evolved into this state, where certain corporations influence and economic power
is stronger than whole countries. Some MNCs due to their sheer size, significantly
impact countries economies because it makes up a large part of their economic
activity. So as a result, some governments try to appease MNCs as much as possible,
so that they won t threaten to withdraw from the market. The governments of
developing countries act more in the interests of MNCs instead of acting on the
behalf of the people in the country. Governments would even relax their
environmental regulations and build roads at the expense of citizens taxes for the
MNCs. This dependency of
51. Islam Is A Religion Based On The Interpretation And...
Islam is a religion based on the interpretation and application of fundamental
scriptures geared towards the need of a growing, modernizing religious community.
The Qur an and the Prophet Mohammed s Sunnah and hadith serve as the main
sources for attaining religious knowledge. Scholars of Islam, Ulema, delegated a
mechanism in which they can gain knowledge after they have consulted the Quran
and Sunnah through ijtihad and qiyas. The flexibility with which they can use
reason, ijtihad, and analogies, qiyas, to answer questions of the time created doctrines
that shed light onto the growing concerns within the Muslim community. This
methodology has served to provide a path in which religious scholars can apply Islam
to the changing dynamics of gender roles. The modernizing world provided the
framework for female scholars to enter the field of religious study and interpret
Islam on their own. Drawing on their reasoning and their ability to make analogies to
stories within Islam helped women develop sound arguments within Islam that
codified women s rights. Muslim feminist used the religion of Islam as the backbone
of their movement by highlighting their rights and freedoms within Islamic scripture.
They opened the gates of ijtihad to reevaluate scripture pertaining to their rights in a
marriage free from the nuisances of male scholars. Religious tools in extracting
knowledge within the folds of Islam allowed women to challenge existing marriage
norms and gender roles based in
52. Great Expectations By Charles Dicken
In Charles Dicken s novel Great Expectations there is a wide diverse cast of
characters who play different significant roles that affect the character
development of Pip. One of the unsung heroes throughout the book, that s role can
be often overlooked is Herbert Pocket. At first glance, it can seem as if Herbert
does not have as much of an influence on Pip as he tends to blend into the
background, along with the fact that at different points can compare to other minor
characters that only show up when they are needed to help move the plot along.
Herbert stands out from this crowd due to different factors in his relationship with
Pip, and how this association allows him to be able to affect and help mold Pip s
character. This close bond began with Pip s first experience with how a gentleman
would react in different circumstances that he uses as an expectation as he takes the
path to become a gentleman himself. On this path to becoming a gentleman Pip
confides in Herbert many times, and seeks his advice that ultimately directs Pip s
decision on whatever topic he went to Herbert asking for help on. Herbert never
fails to come to Pip s aid, proving his trustworthiness, always doing so with a cheery
attitude that Pip later reflects upon how it influence over him and others as well.
This further engraves the trust and friendship that Pip and Herbert share, Herbert
being there to provide Pip with a family type of love between Pip s different father
figures he is presented with. It
53. The Failure of Integration Essay
The Failure of Integration
After four decades of school integration America has given up, and the question is:
quot; Why? quot;. I believe the answer is because absolutely nothing worked!
Bussing was a hassle, most magnet schools were set up for false reasons, and
everything was very costly. With everything they tried there were still no
significant changes in the test scores of the minority students. So now here we are
in the late 21st century and it can all be summed up with what Chris Hansen of the
American Civil Liberties Union in New York City believes the courts are saying,
quot;We still agree with the goal of school desegregation, but it s too hard, and we re
tired of it, and we give up. quot; ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
quot; There is evidence that federal courts are realizing that the 25 year old policy of
busing to achieve racial balance in schools has not worked as a means for ending
segregation or improving the academic performance of minority students.
quot;(NCPA)
Busing did not work out as planned; scores for minority students were not higher and
neither was their happiness. Peter Schmidt opinion is that quot;after seeing some
districts labyrinthine busing maps, that mandating the integration of classrooms has
cost a good number of students any chance of a fair and quality education. quot;
Another reason why plans for integration stopped was that many believed they were
morally wrong. Mr. Symington, a Republican, said, quot; The education of
Arizona s children should not be held prisoner by a racial quota system. quot; While
Edward Newsome feels it s just patronizing to blacks, quot;that the courts are so
willing to assume that anything that is predominately black must be inferior. quot;
There were also problems with magnet school programs. Most were designed to
attract white students to predominately black schools and vice versa. The
communities were using magnet schools to lure whites away from private schools.
Along with being unjust the magnet school plan also did not work. In 1985 one
district was 73.6% minority, 11 years later the district is now 75.9% minority.
Missouri v. Jenkins stopped the unjustness of Judge

As for the second couple, it comprises of Chandini, a Canadian born Sri Lankan
woman and her French Canadian boyfriend, Jon (see Photo 2). Chandini and Jon
are in their late twenties and have been dating each other for over 4 years. The
couple first met at a party thrown by mutual friends. They will be moving in
together for the first time during the summer. While Chandini was not seeking her
parents approval in regard to her moving out, she was still very nervous to
announce to them that she was leaving. Her task was made easier by an older sister
who had eased her parents into the whole dating non Sri Lankan people. Prior to the
beginning of her relationship with Jon, Chandini s elder sister had herself been dating

The reason for that was because Sara hated Jeremy s family and tried to avoid
being with them as much as possible while Jon s parents did not live in the same
city as the couple so it was not possible to meet with them. The couples did not give
the researcher permission to interact with them outside of these fields. The researcher
was not able to meet with the couples friends and see how they interact among their
peers. While this would have provided interesting data on the subject, the priority of
the research was on their parents and so, the lack of data on their peers did not
negatively impact the research.
For the participant observation, the couples were given the choice of deciding on the
meeting place as well as the time and date. The goal was to let them be in control
as much as possible as a means to make them be comfortable with the research. All
the interviews that were conducted with the couples were informal. This was done
purposely so that the couples would be at ease and think that we were having a
normal conversation as friends and I, as the researcher, was simply curious about
their relationship. This is an essential part of the research for the degree to which
trust and cooperation (rapport) are established influences to large extent the degree to
which information gathered in participant observation is accurate and dependable
