Saint Dymphna
The earliest historical
account of the
veneration of St.
Dymphna dates from
the middle of the
thirteenth century.
Under Bishop Guy I of
Cambrai (1238-47),
Pierre, a canon of the
church of Saint Aubert
at Cambrai, wrote a
"Vita" of the saint,
Her biography was
first recorded in
the 13th century
by a canon of the
Church of Aubert
of Avranches at
Cambrai, France.
It was commissioned
by Guiard of Laon,
the Bishop of Cambrai
(1238–1248)
she had been venerated for many years in a church at Gheel
(province of Antwerp, Belgium), which was devoted to her
Ireland in the
7th century.
Dymphna's
father Damon
was a pagan
king of Oriel.
Her mother
was a devout
Christian
the daughter
of a pagan
king of Oriel
(Airgialla)
Ireland,
she became a
Christian and
was secretly
baptized.
When Dymphna
was 14 years old,
she consecrated
herself to Christ
and took a vow
of chastity.
Eventually the
king's counsellors
advised him
to remarry.
Damon agreed,
but only on the
condition that his
bride would
be as beautiful
as his deceased
wife.
her mother
died. Damon
had loved his
wife deeply,
and in the
aftermath
of her death
his mental
health sharply
deteriorated.
After searching fruitlessly, Damon began to desire his
daughter because of her strong resemblance to her mother
she swore to
uphold her vows
and fled the court
along with her
confessor Father
Gerebernus, two
trusted servants,
and the king's
jester, landing in
what is present-
day Gheel
Belgium
she fled with the priest Gerebernus and landed near Antwerp.
One tradition states that
once settled in Geel,
Dymphna built a hospice
for the poor and sick of
the region. However, it
was through the use of
her wealth that her
father would eventually
ascertain where she was,
as some of the coins used
enabled her father to
trace them to Belgium.
a hard worker and had a compassionate heart. She and
her friends established themselves in the town and
Dymphna began caring for the sick and the poor.
they went to the village of Gheel, where there was a chapel
of St. Martin, beside which they took up their abode.
She had
a special
sympathy
for people
suffering from
mental illness
The messengers
of her father,
discovered their
whereabouts;
the father
folllowed her
and renewed
his offer.
Damon ordered his soldiers to kill Gerebernus and tried to force
Dymphna to return with him to Ireland, but she resisted.
furious, Damon drew his sword and
struck off his daughter's head.
She was 15
years old when
she died.
After Dymphna
and Gerebernus
were killed, the
residents of Geel
buried them in
a nearby cave.
Years later, her remains were discovered
and moved to a more suitable location
The corpses were put in sarcophagi and entombed in a cave where they
were found later. The body of St. Dymphna was buried in the church of
Gheel, and the bones of St. Gerebernus were transferred to Xanten
The people of Gheel built a church over where Dymphna was
buried. Over the years it began to be noticed that healings
happened at her tomb, especially healing from mental illness.
In 1349 a church honouring Dymphna was built in Geel. By 1480, so many
pilgrims were coming from all over Europe, seeking treatment for
psychiatric disorders that the church housing for them was expanded.
The old church of St. Dymphna in Gheel was destroyed by fire in 1489.
The new church was consecrated in 1532 and is still standing. Every year on
the feast of the saint and on the Tuesday after Pentecost numerous pilgrims
visit her shrine. In Gheel there is also a fraternity under her name
The remains of Dymphna were later put into a silver reliquary and placed
in a church in Geel named in her honour. The remains of Gerebernus
were moved to Xanten, Germany. During the late 15th century the
original St. Dymphna Church in Geel burned down. A second "Church of
St. Dymphna" was then built and consecrated in 1532. The church still
stands on the site where her body is believed to have first been buried
There were numerous
accounts of miraculous
cures, especially
between 1604 and 1668.
As a result, there has
long been a colony
for lunatics at Gheel;
even now there are
sometimes as many as
fifteen hundred whose
relatives invoke St.
Dymphna for
their cure.
Inspired by St. Dymphna’s special concern for the mentally ill the people of Gheel
began to take into their homes the pilgrims who came to visit Dymphna’s tomb. –
In a time when the mentally ill were chained, beaten and locked away the families
of Gheel made these sufferers part of their households with acceptance, freedom,
dignity and whatever level of responsibility they could handle. Some stayed for a
short time, some for the rest of their lives becoming members of the family
in the beginning that they are placed in an institution for observation;
later they are given shelter in the homes of the inhabitants, take part in
their agricultural labours, and are treated very kindly. They are watched
without being conscious of it. The treatment produces good results.
the townspeople began taking them into their own homes.
Thus began a tradition for the ongoing care of those with psychiatric
conditions that has endured for over 500 years. they are called
boarders, and are treated as ordinary and useful members of the town.
They are treated as members of the host family. They work, most often in
menial labour, and in return, they become part of the community. Some stay
a few months, some decades, some for their entire lives. At its peak in the
1930s, over 4,000 'boarders' were housed with the town's inhabitants
Gheel became famous for this model of family care that seemed to
work so well. This tradition is still ongoing though now combined
with a hospital that is only used when absolutely necessary,
and with modern medicine as part of overall treatment
During the 2022 season, the St Dymphna's Church, in Geel, Belgium,
commemorated her by hosting an exposition showing the restored
altarpiece venerating Dymphna by Goossen Van der Weyden
The US
National Shrine
of St. Dymphna
is located
inside St.
Mary's Catholic
Church in
Massillon,
St. Dymphna's Special School is located in Ballina, County Mayo,
Dymphna is known
as the Lily of Éire,
due to her
spotless virtue.
She is traditionally
portrayed wearing
a crown, dressed
in ermine and royal
robes, and holding
a sword
St. Dymphna’s feast day is May 15th. She is the patron saint of
runaways, victims of domestic abuse, incest , and mental health
PRAYER TO SAINT DYMPHNA
St. Dymphna, healer of mental and
emotional suffering, pray for us.
Pray for everyone in mental or
emotional pain, especially those left
on the outskirts without resources.
You inspired a whole town to take
people with mental suffering into
their homes so that they might live
near you and the place you are
buried. They still come and stay
with you and the people of your
town today. Help us build a culture of
compassion and acceptance so these
children of God can live with dignity
among us as the people they are and
so that the rest of us don’t miss out
on what they can give, on their
potential part in building community.
Show us the way. Amen

Saint Dympna, patroness of mental healing.pptx

  • 2. The earliest historical account of the veneration of St. Dymphna dates from the middle of the thirteenth century. Under Bishop Guy I of Cambrai (1238-47), Pierre, a canon of the church of Saint Aubert at Cambrai, wrote a "Vita" of the saint,
  • 3. Her biography was first recorded in the 13th century by a canon of the Church of Aubert of Avranches at Cambrai, France. It was commissioned by Guiard of Laon, the Bishop of Cambrai (1238–1248)
  • 4. she had been venerated for many years in a church at Gheel (province of Antwerp, Belgium), which was devoted to her
  • 5. Ireland in the 7th century. Dymphna's father Damon was a pagan king of Oriel. Her mother was a devout Christian
  • 6. the daughter of a pagan king of Oriel (Airgialla) Ireland, she became a Christian and was secretly baptized.
  • 7. When Dymphna was 14 years old, she consecrated herself to Christ and took a vow of chastity.
  • 8. Eventually the king's counsellors advised him to remarry. Damon agreed, but only on the condition that his bride would be as beautiful as his deceased wife. her mother died. Damon had loved his wife deeply, and in the aftermath of her death his mental health sharply deteriorated.
  • 9. After searching fruitlessly, Damon began to desire his daughter because of her strong resemblance to her mother
  • 10. she swore to uphold her vows and fled the court along with her confessor Father Gerebernus, two trusted servants, and the king's jester, landing in what is present- day Gheel Belgium
  • 11. she fled with the priest Gerebernus and landed near Antwerp.
  • 12. One tradition states that once settled in Geel, Dymphna built a hospice for the poor and sick of the region. However, it was through the use of her wealth that her father would eventually ascertain where she was, as some of the coins used enabled her father to trace them to Belgium.
  • 13. a hard worker and had a compassionate heart. She and her friends established themselves in the town and Dymphna began caring for the sick and the poor.
  • 14. they went to the village of Gheel, where there was a chapel of St. Martin, beside which they took up their abode.
  • 15. She had a special sympathy for people suffering from mental illness
  • 16. The messengers of her father, discovered their whereabouts; the father folllowed her and renewed his offer.
  • 17. Damon ordered his soldiers to kill Gerebernus and tried to force Dymphna to return with him to Ireland, but she resisted.
  • 18. furious, Damon drew his sword and struck off his daughter's head.
  • 19. She was 15 years old when she died. After Dymphna and Gerebernus were killed, the residents of Geel buried them in a nearby cave.
  • 20.
  • 21.
  • 22.
  • 23. Years later, her remains were discovered and moved to a more suitable location
  • 24. The corpses were put in sarcophagi and entombed in a cave where they were found later. The body of St. Dymphna was buried in the church of Gheel, and the bones of St. Gerebernus were transferred to Xanten
  • 25. The people of Gheel built a church over where Dymphna was buried. Over the years it began to be noticed that healings happened at her tomb, especially healing from mental illness.
  • 26. In 1349 a church honouring Dymphna was built in Geel. By 1480, so many pilgrims were coming from all over Europe, seeking treatment for psychiatric disorders that the church housing for them was expanded.
  • 27. The old church of St. Dymphna in Gheel was destroyed by fire in 1489. The new church was consecrated in 1532 and is still standing. Every year on the feast of the saint and on the Tuesday after Pentecost numerous pilgrims visit her shrine. In Gheel there is also a fraternity under her name
  • 28. The remains of Dymphna were later put into a silver reliquary and placed in a church in Geel named in her honour. The remains of Gerebernus were moved to Xanten, Germany. During the late 15th century the original St. Dymphna Church in Geel burned down. A second "Church of St. Dymphna" was then built and consecrated in 1532. The church still stands on the site where her body is believed to have first been buried
  • 29. There were numerous accounts of miraculous cures, especially between 1604 and 1668. As a result, there has long been a colony for lunatics at Gheel; even now there are sometimes as many as fifteen hundred whose relatives invoke St. Dymphna for their cure.
  • 30. Inspired by St. Dymphna’s special concern for the mentally ill the people of Gheel began to take into their homes the pilgrims who came to visit Dymphna’s tomb. – In a time when the mentally ill were chained, beaten and locked away the families of Gheel made these sufferers part of their households with acceptance, freedom, dignity and whatever level of responsibility they could handle. Some stayed for a short time, some for the rest of their lives becoming members of the family
  • 31. in the beginning that they are placed in an institution for observation; later they are given shelter in the homes of the inhabitants, take part in their agricultural labours, and are treated very kindly. They are watched without being conscious of it. The treatment produces good results.
  • 32. the townspeople began taking them into their own homes. Thus began a tradition for the ongoing care of those with psychiatric conditions that has endured for over 500 years. they are called boarders, and are treated as ordinary and useful members of the town.
  • 33. They are treated as members of the host family. They work, most often in menial labour, and in return, they become part of the community. Some stay a few months, some decades, some for their entire lives. At its peak in the 1930s, over 4,000 'boarders' were housed with the town's inhabitants
  • 34. Gheel became famous for this model of family care that seemed to work so well. This tradition is still ongoing though now combined with a hospital that is only used when absolutely necessary, and with modern medicine as part of overall treatment
  • 35. During the 2022 season, the St Dymphna's Church, in Geel, Belgium, commemorated her by hosting an exposition showing the restored altarpiece venerating Dymphna by Goossen Van der Weyden
  • 36. The US National Shrine of St. Dymphna is located inside St. Mary's Catholic Church in Massillon,
  • 37. St. Dymphna's Special School is located in Ballina, County Mayo,
  • 38. Dymphna is known as the Lily of Éire, due to her spotless virtue. She is traditionally portrayed wearing a crown, dressed in ermine and royal robes, and holding a sword
  • 39. St. Dymphna’s feast day is May 15th. She is the patron saint of runaways, victims of domestic abuse, incest , and mental health
  • 40. PRAYER TO SAINT DYMPHNA St. Dymphna, healer of mental and emotional suffering, pray for us. Pray for everyone in mental or emotional pain, especially those left on the outskirts without resources. You inspired a whole town to take people with mental suffering into their homes so that they might live near you and the place you are buried. They still come and stay with you and the people of your town today. Help us build a culture of compassion and acceptance so these children of God can live with dignity among us as the people they are and so that the rest of us don’t miss out on what they can give, on their potential part in building community. Show us the way. Amen
