Sage Advance manufactures the Copper Cricket solar water heating system. In the 1980s, they built prototypes and sought licensing agreements for the technology. However, the solar industry declined after 1985 when government tax credits for solar installations were canceled. By 1986, 85% of solar manufacturers had disappeared. Sage was able to sell 30 systems through a shelter magazine. As of 1991, sales had not reached breakeven levels and cash flow was a severe problem. The Copper Cricket was well-reviewed but marketing efforts were limited due to financial constraints. Sage sought dealers and worked with utilities but struggled against larger competitors in the unstable market environment.
