Keith Haring was born in 1958 in Pennsylvania and grew up with his cartoonist father. He studied commercial art but switched to fine arts and moved to New York City in 1978 where he was inspired by graffiti art. Haring became known for drawing with chalk in subway stations, where he developed his iconic "Radiant Baby" symbol. By 1982, Haring was well known amongst artists like Futura 2000 and Madonna. He received international recognition after painting a wall in Melbourne, Australia. Haring openly struggled with and eventually died of AIDS-related complications in 1990.
