2. It often happens that an electrical socket or appliance does not work. In
most of the cases you can resolve the issue yourself by applying
common sense. But before anything else it is crucial that you are aware
how to isolate a circuit and make sure that it is no more alive.
To ensure safety every electrical product needs to be installed in
compliance with the local Building Regulations. If there is any doubt do
not hesitate to consult a qualified expert.
3. Electricity is potentially hazardous. Qualified tradesmen dealing in
electrical fault finding emphasises to follow these basic safety
precautions before setting out for any type of electrical work:
• Turn off the main power at the CU (consumer unit) or fuse box.
• Isolate the circuit you have targeted by taking out the circuit
fuse. Put the fuse inside a safe drawer to avoid accidental replacement.
• Alternatively, you can switch off the breaker and lock it if
possible.
• Make sure the circuit is dead indeed by using a socket tester.
4. When a plug-in appliance
does not work
When a plug-in electrical appliance does not work, try replacing the
bulb. Plug the appliance into a different socket. If it starts working,
probably the earlier socket is faulty.
If the appliance does not work in a socket that works smooth, you
should look into the flex connection of the plug before replacing the
fuse.
If the appliance still does not respond then it has some internal fault
that requires professional intervention.
5. When a circuit is dead
Unplug all the appliances running on the circuit. Turn off the main isolating switch in your
consumer unit and then repair the circuit fuse or reset the RCD or the circuit breaker.
Then switch on the main.
Plug in each appliance one by one. This tells you which appliance is causing the fuse to
blow or tripping of the circuit breaker.
Even after isolating the faulty circuit the fuse blows or the circuit breaker trips, you need
a licensed electrician to sort out the problem.
6. When a light does not work
If the other lights connected to that circuit are working you replace the bulb by turning the light off at
the switch.
If that does not solve the issue disconnect power supply and check the flex connection at the light.
Remake the connections by stripping back the cores and then remake the connections. But make sure
the screws at the terminal are tightly in place.
If still it does not sort out the problem check the flex condition using a continuity tester but make sure
the power is off. Replace it if required.
7. When all circuits are dead
Fault finding in electrical circuits is easier if the circuits in a premise are
protected by an RCD. The RCD will trip. Reset it to see whether it trips
again. If it trips again, it is time to check for faulty appliances and a dead
circuit.
If the power is there in your neighbourhood barring your home, better
get in touch with a professional electrical tradesman.
