Do you look at the stories behind the numbers? In That Number is a public will campaign of the Institute of Women & Ethnic Studies that combines compelling statistics, stunning visuals, and real stories to prime communities to advocate for youth-focused trauma-informed care services in New Orleans. Due to the dearth of mental health services following Hurricane Katrina, youth are suffering from trauma related illnesses 3x the national rate, similar to soldiers returning from Afghanistan. Yet their plight has not been centralized in the structural- and business-focused recovery. Violence is alarmingly high and the fractured public school system contributes to the school-to-prison pipeline. As climate change’s impact is increasingly felt, communities need to understand how untreated trauma negatively impacts the development of young people so we can take action immediately post-disaster. Learn about this campaign, that is housed on social media and features the voices of the youth most impacted.
