Content
Aegle marmelos, commonly known as bael, also
Bengal quince, golden apple, Japanese bitter orange,
stone apple or wood apple, is a rare species of tree
native to the Indian subcontinent and Southeast Asia. It
is present in India, Bangladesh, Sri Lanka, and Nepal
as a naturalized species
WhatisAegleMarmelos?
Bael is a slow-growing, tough, medium-sized subtropical
tree and is the only plant belonging to the genus, aegle. The
tree bears fruit once a year during summer, which, in india, is
from march to june. The fruits are either round, pyriform,
oval, or oblong in shape and are of both medicinal and
dietary use. A popular drink colloquially called as ‘bael
sherbet’ is prepared from the ripe fruit, and its consumption
is supposed to have a cooling effect
 Scientific name: Aegle marmelos
 English Name: Bael Fruit, golden Apple
 Family: Rutaceae
 Rank: Species
 Kingdom: Plantae
 Order: Sapindales
 Subfamily: Aurantioideae
Introduction
Aegle marmelos (L.) Correa (family:
rutaceae) is a deciduous tree, 6.0 to 10 m
in height and 0.9 to 1.2 m in girth, with
straight, sharp, axillary thorns and
trifoliate aromatic leaves. The stem bark is
bluish grey, 4-8 mm thick, shallowly
furrowed and corky.
Description
Ulcers
Studied efficacy of Aegle marmelos against gastric ulcer. A
daily dose of 1 gm/kg body weight of the aqueous extract of
leaves of Aegle marmelos was administered orally for 21 days.
The volume of the gastric secretion, ulcer lesion count, pepsin
content, PH, total acidity, hexose and hexosamine content
were the parameters to estimate. The observation indicated a
significant reduction in the ulcer lesion count, volume of
gastric juice, acidity (increase in pH) and hexosamine after
treatment with aqueous extract. However there was no
significant alteration in pepsin and hexose content.
Characteristics of Aegle Marmelos
Chemical Constituent
The pulp contents mucilage, pectin, ugar, tannin,
volatile oil, bitter principle. According to fluckiger
and hanbury the dry pulp the dry pulp contains
chiefly mucilage and probably pectin.
Characteristics Of Aegle Marmelos
Pharmacological Actions
Ripe fruit is sweet, aromatic, cooling alterative and nutritive.
When taken fresh it possesses like that properties unripe fruit is
estringent, digestive and stomachache,a little constipative. Pulp is
stimulant, antipyrutic and anti-scorbutic. Fresh juice is bitter and
pungent. Rootbis anti- inflammatory.
Characteristics Of Aegle Marmelos
Nutritional Properties
Aegle Marmelos one of the most valuable medicinal plant. It has numerous uses in day to
day life. Chemical studies prove that Bael fruit is rich in nutritional value, And this is
being used for from several years ago. Fruit is rich source of mineral, vitamin and fibre.
The baelfruit is highly nutritious. Bael fruit is highly nutritive with the richest source of
riboflavin. Marmelosin a resinos substance is most probably the therapeutically active
principleof baelfruit.
Toxicity Studies
Dried fruit pulp of aegle marmelos was screened for its
topical profile. Ethanolic extract of eagle marmelos dried
fruit pulp was screened for the acute oral toxicity test.
The result concluded that ld50 of the test extract is more
than 1250mg/kg body weight.
Anti-Ulcer Activity
Ulcer develops when there is imbalance between the defensive and
aggressive factors on the mucosa resulting from either potentiation of
aggressive factors and/or lowering of mucosal protection. Stress, non-
steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) and Helicobacter pylori
are the most common causes of ulceration. Cigarette smoking and
alcohol ingestion are other inducers of this disease (Liu and Cho,
2000). Current medicinal therapy with proton pump inhibitors and
selective H2 receptor blockers can efficiently cure ulcers. But none of
these are devoid of side effects and execute their action within a limit.
Moreover, the recurrence of ulcer after stopping the medication is very
high. About 70% of ulcers could recur after stopping medication
(Sachs et al., 2002). These drawbacks of the currently available
antiulcer medicine
Conclusion
In the present study Aegle marmelos have been shown to posses antiulcer
activity against experimentally induced ulcer models, it has shown as significant
reduction in the gastric lesions of the asprin treated pylorus ligated group of
animals. The severity of ulcer can be gauged by assessing the number of lesions
present on the gastric surface of the gastric lumen. Re-epitheliazation of the
gastric mucosa results in the disappearance of lesions were evident for the
potential of the drug. When the mucosal damage is acute and confined to the
epithelium with the basal lamina remaining intact complete repair will occurs
through replacement of necrotic cells migrating form the gastric pits. Acrude
aqueous leaf extract of Aegle marmelos induce re-epitheliazation of the gastric
mucosa suggesting its antiulcerogenic property.
