Project Management: Risk Analysis
Bruce McClaflin
Grantham University
Introduction
The success of the project depends on its capacity to overcome
the various risks that exist. For this unique project, there are
different aspects to consider. For instance, it is important to
consider the duration for the completion of the project. Such
considerations will play a crucial role in determining the overall
success of the project.
Risk Identification
Distinct risks will be faced in the completion of this project.
However, they can be categorized into three: Stakeholder
conflict, cost management, and technical risks.
Conflict
The project will require the input of different stakeholders
including school administrators, parents, local farmers, school
nutritionist, and state representatives. There is a real risk that
conflict is likely to arise among these stakeholders.
Cost Management
Managing costs has been a common concern during the
implementation of projects. A project like this one will take up
various resources, and be implemented over an extended time
period. It is important to ensure that costs are managed for the
attainment of the anticipated outcomes.
Technical Risks
Unique skills are required to successfully complete this project.
As a first-time project, such technical skills may be missing.
Risk Quantification
The first step to mitigating risk in the project will be through
recognition. Identifying potential risks allows project managers
to plan ahead, and develop approaches to mitigate their
consequences (Heinz, 2010).
Conflict among stakeholders is the risk likely to bring about the
most extensive adverse outcomes. This is especially so as the
relationship between stakeholders will be crucial to the success
of the project, and that these relationships will last the entire
length of the project. Cost management will follow as the
second most significant risk. Managing costs based on available
resources will guarantee project success. Project managers will
ensure that stakeholders are adequately skilled to cope with the
requirements of the scheme.
Risk Response
It is important to respond adequately to risk. The response has
to identify the risks that exist, and develop ways to counter
their influence in the completion of the project (Krysiak, 2009).
There will be three main responses based on the three main
risks identified.
The initial response will be aimed at overcoming conflict among
project stakeholders. project managers will be required to be
adept at conflict resolution. Further, these managers will exhibit
appropriate leadership skills to facilitate the accomplishment of
tasks assigned to all stakeholders.
Project managers also have to exhibit exceptional cost
management skills. Resources will be essential in planning,
implementation, and assessment of the project. Cost
management ensures that all steps of the projects are adequately
funded, and are completed as initially anticipated.
Lastly, the planning phase of the project will assess the
preparedness of stakeholders in performing their respective
tasks. Besides accounting for all the resources that will be
required for the project, skills will be assessed. The project
managers will offer training where they deem necessary.
Summary
In order for the project promoting organic foods to be
successful, there has to be a risk analysis that takes account of
all the possible challenges project managers will face. In this
unique project, managers are likely to face issues of conflict,
cost management, and lack of technical skills. This section of
the project proposes ways to respond to these risks with the aim
of mitigating the overall negative impact on the success of the
project.

PROJECT CHARTER
Bruce McClaflin
Grantham University
The purpose of project charter is the delineation of duties,
responsibilities and roles that help to achieve the purpose of the
project set aside. The term project that will focus on as
described earlier on will be the school farming for healthy food.
The project seeks to set up a modern mode of farming that will
see schools within the area feed the school going children with
the most have proper organic food in school. This is done with
the purpose of ensuring that the mental and physical health of
students is maintained. For the brain of a child to develop
effectively they need to be feed with the right food that will
enable them to grow properly and which will in turn boost their
mental development and have a healthy academic life and
normal health (Bare, 2014).
The project is an initiative that has been taken to improve the
health standards of kids and ensure that they can be able to
study well and maintain proper nutrition that will provide them
with a good health. This is to avoid the unhealthy food being
offered to kids in school and which expose them to various
health risks such as obesity or being overweight. The project
will therefore have various stakeholders who will have to play a
specific role to see the realization of the project and in which
they will be applauded for the success. The major stakeholders
of the project are: School administration, Parents, school
nutritionist, farmers from the local area and a state
representative.
These stakeholders will be allocated responsibilities in which
they will ensure that it is performed and ensure that the project
turns out to be a success. The clear breakdown of
responsibilities is to ensure that there is no overlap of duties
among the stakeholders and that the project runs smoothly
without any hitches.
The school administration.
This are the main stakeholders because they will be providing
the school space in which the project will take place. They will
have a bigger role to play since the projects seeks to benefit
them and also they have to ensure that the project is a success.
The school will ensure that the land provided in which the
farming is going to take place is well maintained. It will also
ensure that the farm is divided into portions for every teacher to
head his or her portion with the class. This will help in teaching
the kids how to farm and what are the necessary and essential
nutrients for the body. The school Administration will therefore
be in charge of maintaining the project and overseeing it
although they will be assisted by the main stakeholders.
Parents
The parents will be taught on the type of nutrients that their
kids need to be consuming. This will ensure that not only is
healthy food being provided at school but also at home. The
parents will be required to start some sought of garden at their
homes in which they will continue practicing the healthy food
farming. They will also be needed to offer financial assistance
to the school since this project may turn out to be costly and the
school may need them to assist in managing the farms. Parents
will also be instrumental in achieving the success of the project
since they will explain to their kids the importance of having a
well-balanced diet. This is necessary because some kids may not
accept eating this type of food since it will be deviating from
what they are used to eating at home (Ernest, 2012). This is a
new concept and students will need to be trained and mentally
prepared.
School nutritionist.
The school has employed someone who comes with up with the
diet of the school, it is therefore important to include the
nutritionist to help come up with the necessary menu. The need
of involving the nutritionist is to advise him or her on the
necessary foods that will be good for the students. The school
nutritionist will help in advising parents on the necessary
nutrition’s that is good for their kids. The nutritionist will be
tasked to be reviewing the school menu so as to ensure that the
kids have a healthy meal that will be able to boost their mental
development. The nutritionist will also be inspecting the
standards of the farm and see if the yields being harvested are
good for human consumption (Charles, 2014). This will help to
reduce instances of food poisoning of the children when they
consume food that was not fit for human consumption.
Farmers from the local area
The farmers need to be boosted in terms of being educated on
the importance of good food, this will involve the process of
keeping their farms clean and what type of foods to farm. The
Local farmers will also offer their services to the school due to
their knowledge in farming. The local area farmers will be
educated so as to ensure that the foods that they will be
producing in their farms are of good quality and that the society
will be fed with a healthy food. The local farmers will be able
to assist the school in maintaining the farms. This will be
through pruning and application of the necessary fertilizers
since they have vast knowledge in farming.
State representative.
It is important to have a nutritionist expert who represents the
states, the purpose of this is that the state will be the main
stakeholder since it has the mandate. The state will be able to
offer quality seeds that will be used for this purpose of ensuring
that the school has quality seeds that will provide good yields.
The state will also offer an expert who will be able to advise the
school nutritionist on the best modes of planting and how to do
it. The expert provided by the state will also offer guidance to
the parents and enable them to be more productive and active in
ensuring that their kids are able to get quality food and their
role in maintaining the health of their kids. The state
representative will play an important role in the sense that he or
she will offer partnership with the school and this will also
include provision of resources. The resource may include money
or man power that may come in to assist in the implementation
of the project.

In summary the above stakeholders need to have a distinct role
that will help in the process of managing the project. For the
purpose of ensuring that the roles and duties of the stakeholders
do not overlap since this may have an effect in the realization of
the project since there will be conflict of roles and interests at
the same time. The project will only be realized if the roles and
duties of the stakeholders is underpinned as it has been done in
the paper.

Project Management
The project of choice will be focusing on promotion of organic
foods by engaging school project that help learners practice
production of organic foods from school farms and extend the
skills and knowledge to their homes. Also, the project will
increase the awareness of the benefits of organic foods and
encourages the consumption of these types of food in school and
at home. The project will be titled “School Farming for Healthy
Food.” Therefore, the main target of the project will be the
young children in schools. School Farming for Healthy Food is
an educational project for the school going children that aims at
creating the desired attitude, knowledge, and skills for the
production and consumption of organic foods.
I identified the project because of its benefits to the school
children and the entire society. The outcome of the project will
be helpful in ensuring that there is sustainable food production
and healthy lives due to availability of the right kind of food.
On the other hand, the project will help in inculcating the right
attitudes towards farming and producing healthy foods. It will
provide the resources needed for the practical work needed to
ensure the right skills are given to the intended audience.
Furthermore, the project will give schools the opportunity to
connect with local farms to serve healthy meals in school
cafeterias to improve student’s health and offer food and
gardening education.
One of the initial steps in almost all projects that affect
execution of the project is the identification of the individuals
and the groups that have some kind of interest or stake in the
project. It is the first step upon which the project management
team can carry out more detailed analysis of every group
depending on the relative importance of the groups’ stakes. The
identification of the various sets of interests in the project can
continuously provide valuable insights into the issues at stake.
In this case, there are different stakeholders who are involved in
the planning and implementation of the project. The
stakeholders include school nutrition staff, educators, farmers
and community members.
Other than the basic identification of primary and secondary
stakeholders, there is the need to carry out some form of
ranking of the various stakes of the groups to clarify the groups
that are most concerned with certain sets of issues. This is
necessary because the project entails the integration of
activities where the interactions between different people and
activities may become very complex and far reaching such that
almost every person in different areas seems to be kind of a
stakeholder in all the sectors and subsectors of the project. The
interactions should be recognized, but there is the need to have
a way of identifying the individuals or groups of people who are
the principal or key stakeholders concerned with particular
activities to maintain the involvement of the various groups in
the project within reasonable limits.
Considering the project stakeholders, the school nutrition staff
will be fundamental in helping the project team members to
ensure that learners are eating healthy food as a basis for
appropriate eating behavior. They have the mandate of
approving the meals that children should be consuming in
school. As such, their role in ensuring that the project activities
related to the type of food taken by the students is implemented.
On the other hand, the farmers from the local areas will be
required to participate in the project for multiple reasons. In the
first case, they will be the source of healthy food that will be
used in feeding the students. Secondly, the farmers will help in
providing the skills necessary for production of healthy foods
for the young children. This will help in encouraging the young
children who aspire to be farmers and ensure that the children
and other project participant get practical experience of what
farmers undergo to produce the much needed food.
The teachers will be part of the project and they will play an
important role in ensuring the project goals are achieved. Since
the project has a long-term goal of developing a generation of
conscious eaters, it is most appropriate to focus on the young
children who are already in school. As s result, the teachers will
help in reaching the children and deliver the required
information to the young learners. They are best placed to
communicate effectively with the children in school without
causing any anxiety amongst the learners. Besides, they can
effectively offer the knowledge and skills that the children
require to become adventurous and conscious eaters. They
should be given priority in this case because they can help in
integrating the required knowledge in the curriculum.
The community is another important stakeholder that will be
important for the project because of the need to ensure that the
knowledge and skills that the learners acquire through the
project is put into practice. In this case, the community refers to
the parents, guardians, and the people who have interest in the
success of the children within their regions. These people also
have a role in motivating their children into participating in the
project. While the project will be implemented in schools, the
role of various community members in encouraging
participation and testing the skills away from school will be
pivotal for the success of the project. On the other hand, the
community should be part of the project to help in promoting
the project’s success through effective response to the project
experiences (New Hampshire Department of Education, 2012).
The communities are generally easier to identify and work with
compared to other stakeholder groups that are defined by
aspects such as gender and age because they can be more easily
identified by the members. Also, in this project, the interested
community members will easily be identified through their
active participation in the welfare of the children who are target
of the project. However, the community members often hold
different stakes that require clarification and to be taken into
account (FAO Corporate Document Repository, 2017). For
instance, different perceptions about food may come into play.
In many cases, some community members may be supportive to
promoting organic foods while others may focus on economic
issues that surround food production and consumption.
Some of the characteristics of the stakeholders that have to be
considered include age, gender, cultural and religious diversity,
experience, and professionalism. It will be necessary to
recognize such characteristics. Since the project is open to all
the children in the school, who are willing to be part of the
project, all project activities will consider both sides of gender.
In the same line, other stakeholders including the teachers,
parents who are will to give support to project, and farmers will
be included without putting restrictions based on gender. On the
other hand, the program activities will have to be aligned with
age because most activities will be targeting the children.
Cultural and religious diversity will be encouraged by ensuring
that there is no any form of discrimination in the
implementation of the project. It is expected that the children
and the community members may belong to different religious
or cultural groups. Finally, the farmers and teachers will be
using their experience and professionalism in delivering their
part of the project. As such, the project management team will
have to relate with these stakeholders with a sense of
professionalism as way of respecting their field of expertise.

Running Head RISK ANALYSIS .docx

  • 1. Running Head: RISK ANALYSIS 1 RISK ANALYSIS 5 Project Management: Risk Analysis Bruce McClaflin Grantham University Introduction The success of the project depends on its capacity to overcome the various risks that exist. For this unique project, there are different aspects to consider. For instance, it is important to consider the duration for the completion of the project. Such considerations will play a crucial role in determining the overall success of the project. Risk Identification Distinct risks will be faced in the completion of this project. However, they can be categorized into three: Stakeholder
  • 2. conflict, cost management, and technical risks. Conflict The project will require the input of different stakeholders including school administrators, parents, local farmers, school nutritionist, and state representatives. There is a real risk that conflict is likely to arise among these stakeholders. Cost Management Managing costs has been a common concern during the implementation of projects. A project like this one will take up various resources, and be implemented over an extended time period. It is important to ensure that costs are managed for the attainment of the anticipated outcomes. Technical Risks Unique skills are required to successfully complete this project. As a first-time project, such technical skills may be missing. Risk Quantification The first step to mitigating risk in the project will be through recognition. Identifying potential risks allows project managers to plan ahead, and develop approaches to mitigate their consequences (Heinz, 2010). Conflict among stakeholders is the risk likely to bring about the most extensive adverse outcomes. This is especially so as the relationship between stakeholders will be crucial to the success of the project, and that these relationships will last the entire length of the project. Cost management will follow as the second most significant risk. Managing costs based on available resources will guarantee project success. Project managers will ensure that stakeholders are adequately skilled to cope with the requirements of the scheme. Risk Response It is important to respond adequately to risk. The response has to identify the risks that exist, and develop ways to counter their influence in the completion of the project (Krysiak, 2009). There will be three main responses based on the three main risks identified.
  • 3. The initial response will be aimed at overcoming conflict among project stakeholders. project managers will be required to be adept at conflict resolution. Further, these managers will exhibit appropriate leadership skills to facilitate the accomplishment of tasks assigned to all stakeholders. Project managers also have to exhibit exceptional cost management skills. Resources will be essential in planning, implementation, and assessment of the project. Cost management ensures that all steps of the projects are adequately funded, and are completed as initially anticipated. Lastly, the planning phase of the project will assess the preparedness of stakeholders in performing their respective tasks. Besides accounting for all the resources that will be required for the project, skills will be assessed. The project managers will offer training where they deem necessary. Summary In order for the project promoting organic foods to be successful, there has to be a risk analysis that takes account of all the possible challenges project managers will face. In this unique project, managers are likely to face issues of conflict, cost management, and lack of technical skills. This section of the project proposes ways to respond to these risks with the aim of mitigating the overall negative impact on the success of the project. References Heinz, P.-B. (2010). Running Head: PROJECT CHARTER 1 PROJECT CHARTER 2 PROJECT CHARTER Bruce McClaflin Grantham University The purpose of project charter is the delineation of duties, responsibilities and roles that help to achieve the purpose of the project set aside. The term project that will focus on as described earlier on will be the school farming for healthy food. The project seeks to set up a modern mode of farming that will see schools within the area feed the school going children with the most have proper organic food in school. This is done with the purpose of ensuring that the mental and physical health of students is maintained. For the brain of a child to develop effectively they need to be feed with the right food that will enable them to grow properly and which will in turn boost their mental development and have a healthy academic life and normal health (Bare, 2014). The project is an initiative that has been taken to improve the health standards of kids and ensure that they can be able to study well and maintain proper nutrition that will provide them with a good health. This is to avoid the unhealthy food being
  • 5. offered to kids in school and which expose them to various health risks such as obesity or being overweight. The project will therefore have various stakeholders who will have to play a specific role to see the realization of the project and in which they will be applauded for the success. The major stakeholders of the project are: School administration, Parents, school nutritionist, farmers from the local area and a state representative. These stakeholders will be allocated responsibilities in which they will ensure that it is performed and ensure that the project turns out to be a success. The clear breakdown of responsibilities is to ensure that there is no overlap of duties among the stakeholders and that the project runs smoothly without any hitches. The school administration. This are the main stakeholders because they will be providing the school space in which the project will take place. They will have a bigger role to play since the projects seeks to benefit them and also they have to ensure that the project is a success. The school will ensure that the land provided in which the farming is going to take place is well maintained. It will also ensure that the farm is divided into portions for every teacher to head his or her portion with the class. This will help in teaching the kids how to farm and what are the necessary and essential nutrients for the body. The school Administration will therefore be in charge of maintaining the project and overseeing it although they will be assisted by the main stakeholders. Parents The parents will be taught on the type of nutrients that their kids need to be consuming. This will ensure that not only is healthy food being provided at school but also at home. The parents will be required to start some sought of garden at their homes in which they will continue practicing the healthy food farming. They will also be needed to offer financial assistance
  • 6. to the school since this project may turn out to be costly and the school may need them to assist in managing the farms. Parents will also be instrumental in achieving the success of the project since they will explain to their kids the importance of having a well-balanced diet. This is necessary because some kids may not accept eating this type of food since it will be deviating from what they are used to eating at home (Ernest, 2012). This is a new concept and students will need to be trained and mentally prepared. School nutritionist. The school has employed someone who comes with up with the diet of the school, it is therefore important to include the nutritionist to help come up with the necessary menu. The need of involving the nutritionist is to advise him or her on the necessary foods that will be good for the students. The school nutritionist will help in advising parents on the necessary nutrition’s that is good for their kids. The nutritionist will be tasked to be reviewing the school menu so as to ensure that the kids have a healthy meal that will be able to boost their mental development. The nutritionist will also be inspecting the standards of the farm and see if the yields being harvested are good for human consumption (Charles, 2014). This will help to reduce instances of food poisoning of the children when they consume food that was not fit for human consumption. Farmers from the local area The farmers need to be boosted in terms of being educated on the importance of good food, this will involve the process of keeping their farms clean and what type of foods to farm. The Local farmers will also offer their services to the school due to their knowledge in farming. The local area farmers will be educated so as to ensure that the foods that they will be producing in their farms are of good quality and that the society will be fed with a healthy food. The local farmers will be able to assist the school in maintaining the farms. This will be through pruning and application of the necessary fertilizers
  • 7. since they have vast knowledge in farming. State representative. It is important to have a nutritionist expert who represents the states, the purpose of this is that the state will be the main stakeholder since it has the mandate. The state will be able to offer quality seeds that will be used for this purpose of ensuring that the school has quality seeds that will provide good yields. The state will also offer an expert who will be able to advise the school nutritionist on the best modes of planting and how to do it. The expert provided by the state will also offer guidance to the parents and enable them to be more productive and active in ensuring that their kids are able to get quality food and their role in maintaining the health of their kids. The state representative will play an important role in the sense that he or she will offer partnership with the school and this will also include provision of resources. The resource may include money or man power that may come in to assist in the implementation of the project. • 11. Project Management The project of choice will be focusing on promotion of organic foods by engaging school project that help learners practice production of organic foods from school farms and extend the skills and knowledge to their homes. Also, the project will increase the awareness of the benefits of organic foods and encourages the consumption of these types of food in school and at home. The project will be titled “School Farming for Healthy Food.” Therefore, the main target of the project will be the young children in schools. School Farming for Healthy Food is an educational project for the school going children that aims at creating the desired attitude, knowledge, and skills for the production and consumption of organic foods. I identified the project because of its benefits to the school children and the entire society. The outcome of the project will be helpful in ensuring that there is sustainable food production and healthy lives due to availability of the right kind of food. On the other hand, the project will help in inculcating the right attitudes towards farming and producing healthy foods. It will provide the resources needed for the practical work needed to ensure the right skills are given to the intended audience. Furthermore, the project will give schools the opportunity to connect with local farms to serve healthy meals in school cafeterias to improve student’s health and offer food and gardening education. One of the initial steps in almost all projects that affect execution of the project is the identification of the individuals and the groups that have some kind of interest or stake in the project. It is the first step upon which the project management team can carry out more detailed analysis of every group depending on the relative importance of the groups’ stakes. The identification of the various sets of interests in the project can continuously provide valuable insights into the issues at stake. In this case, there are different stakeholders who are involved in the planning and implementation of the project. The stakeholders include school nutrition staff, educators, farmers
  • 12. and community members. Other than the basic identification of primary and secondary stakeholders, there is the need to carry out some form of ranking of the various stakes of the groups to clarify the groups that are most concerned with certain sets of issues. This is necessary because the project entails the integration of activities where the interactions between different people and activities may become very complex and far reaching such that almost every person in different areas seems to be kind of a stakeholder in all the sectors and subsectors of the project. The interactions should be recognized, but there is the need to have a way of identifying the individuals or groups of people who are the principal or key stakeholders concerned with particular activities to maintain the involvement of the various groups in the project within reasonable limits. Considering the project stakeholders, the school nutrition staff will be fundamental in helping the project team members to ensure that learners are eating healthy food as a basis for appropriate eating behavior. They have the mandate of approving the meals that children should be consuming in school. As such, their role in ensuring that the project activities related to the type of food taken by the students is implemented. On the other hand, the farmers from the local areas will be required to participate in the project for multiple reasons. In the first case, they will be the source of healthy food that will be used in feeding the students. Secondly, the farmers will help in providing the skills necessary for production of healthy foods for the young children. This will help in encouraging the young children who aspire to be farmers and ensure that the children and other project participant get practical experience of what farmers undergo to produce the much needed food. The teachers will be part of the project and they will play an important role in ensuring the project goals are achieved. Since the project has a long-term goal of developing a generation of conscious eaters, it is most appropriate to focus on the young children who are already in school. As s result, the teachers will
  • 13. help in reaching the children and deliver the required information to the young learners. They are best placed to communicate effectively with the children in school without causing any anxiety amongst the learners. Besides, they can effectively offer the knowledge and skills that the children require to become adventurous and conscious eaters. They should be given priority in this case because they can help in integrating the required knowledge in the curriculum. The community is another important stakeholder that will be important for the project because of the need to ensure that the knowledge and skills that the learners acquire through the project is put into practice. In this case, the community refers to the parents, guardians, and the people who have interest in the success of the children within their regions. These people also have a role in motivating their children into participating in the project. While the project will be implemented in schools, the role of various community members in encouraging participation and testing the skills away from school will be pivotal for the success of the project. On the other hand, the community should be part of the project to help in promoting the project’s success through effective response to the project experiences (New Hampshire Department of Education, 2012). The communities are generally easier to identify and work with compared to other stakeholder groups that are defined by aspects such as gender and age because they can be more easily identified by the members. Also, in this project, the interested community members will easily be identified through their active participation in the welfare of the children who are target of the project. However, the community members often hold different stakes that require clarification and to be taken into account (FAO Corporate Document Repository, 2017). For instance, different perceptions about food may come into play. In many cases, some community members may be supportive to promoting organic foods while others may focus on economic issues that surround food production and consumption. Some of the characteristics of the stakeholders that have to be
  • 14. considered include age, gender, cultural and religious diversity, experience, and professionalism. It will be necessary to recognize such characteristics. Since the project is open to all the children in the school, who are willing to be part of the project, all project activities will consider both sides of gender. In the same line, other stakeholders including the teachers, parents who are will to give support to project, and farmers will be included without putting restrictions based on gender. On the other hand, the program activities will have to be aligned with age because most activities will be targeting the children. Cultural and religious diversity will be encouraged by ensuring that there is no any form of discrimination in the implementation of the project. It is expected that the children and the community members may belong to different religious or cultural groups. Finally, the farmers and teachers will be using their experience and professionalism in delivering their part of the project. As such, the project management team will have to relate with these stakeholders with a sense of professionalism as way of respecting their field of expertise.
