Running head: CULTURAL CAPITAL CULTURAL CAPITAL 11 Introduction Cultural capital can be described as forms of skills, education and knowledge as well as the advantages that one has in the society as they take on their status. Gender has played a crucial role in the society’s cultural capital. For example in the employment industry, there are some jobs and opportunities that have been serialized to belong to women while others are associated with men. In engineering industry, and hospitality industry for instance, women are believed to be good to serve in front office of a hospitality industry and not men. Likewise, in engineering industry, men are thought to be better in fixing mechanical problems than women. Therefore, this paper will explore the cultural capital in the context of a market setting. The academic credentials and qualifications of the people working within this setting will be put under my perspective; the ability and talents of the people working within the selected airport will give a true picture of the kind of social capita invested in them by the working environment. Definition of cultural capital The architect of this term Pierre Bourdieu, argued that, cultural capital favors nature more than nature argument. He argues, that all the intrigues involved in the cultural capital in the setting is related with previous cultural capital that was instilled by the family. Thus, cultural capital can be classified into three categories highlighted embodied, objectified and institutionalized. Embodied cultural capital The embodied cultural capital involves consciously acquired and passively inherited traits within a setting. In an airport setting for instance, all people working within the airport acquired the traits they have courtesy of the environment and their habitus thinking. Men behave and dress in a certain way while ladies behave and also dress in a certain way. In the ticketing office for instance, there are more women in service than men while in the cargo section, there are more men working than ladies. Objectified cultural capital On the other hand, objectified cultural capital entails physical objects owned within a setting. For this case, the machines that people working the airport will tend to act in a particular way because of the machines they are used. Transmission of work traits do occur when people are accustomed to doing things in a particular way. Institutionalized cultural capital Institutionalized cultural capital refers to the institutional recognition especially in academic credentials, qualification and the cultural capital that an individual holds. In a market setting, wide array of cultural capital can be expressed in qualitative or quantitative measurements.
