The video uses various camera shots, angles, lighting, and movements to portray emotion and appeal to the target audience. It begins with a low tilt showing feet and uses shadows to create suspense. Close-ups are used frequently to exaggerate the emotion between a man and woman arguing. Various shots also employ voyeurism to appeal to viewers by focusing on the woman in provocative clothing and her anger. The lighting, shots of the performers, and iconography emphasize the rock genre and style to engage the target audience.
2. The music video uses a range of camera shots,
angles and movements to make it exciting and
interesting for the target audience.
The video begins with a low tilt from flooring up to
reveal feet. The lighting is interesting as the shot
predominantly uses shadows to create suspense
from the start. We see a man being dragged by two
people later revealed in a close up as women. The
light is directional, coming from the direction the
women are walking in to create shadows behind
them.
A straight cut then leads to a close up of the lead
singer, who appears to be the man being dragged.
The cut occurs as the song begins. The close up
reveals his expression and emotion in the situation
that he is in. it also reveals the people holding him
to be women. However, the lighting has been
focused on him so all we can see of the women are
their chins and the rest in shadows. The lighting
gradually lifts as his head moves up.
3. One of Andrew Goodwin’s seven conventions is
consistently used in this video. The predominance
of the close up has been successfully used
throughout to exaggerate the emotion being
portrayed from both parties. The video is based
around an argument between a man and a woman.
We see he has been captured and trapped. The
close up reveals more about each person adding to
the intensity of the theme.
The close up is also used in the performance
section of the video frequently to show the passion
of the performers. The lighting in these close ups is
very unique in a way that it distorts the main image
making it hard to see. I think that this emphasises
the genre of rock and portrays it in an accurate way.
4. Another of Andrew Goodwin’s conventions in
voyeurism. The convention is being clearly used in
this video throughout, A range of shots are used to
make the woman appeal to the audience.
1) Over the shoulder shot and lighting focuses on
his reaction and expression but also reveals her
removing her clothes.
2) Two shot reveals her in underwear and also his
reactions in more of a movement sense.
3) Another over the shoulder shot but with the
camera focus on the woman rather than him. A
unique, clever and nice shot.
4) A two shot of two women in provocative
clothing reveals a seductive nature to the video,
appealing to the target audience.
5/6) Two over the shoulder shots but from the
singer’s perspective of the woman to reveal her
anger.

5. These various shots use light very interestingly.
There is clear directional lighting coming from the
right hand side in the separate performers and from
behind when the whole band is together. The
medium close ups and close ups reveal a lot about
the passion of the performers. The shadows on
their bodies and faces make it appear that half of
them is missing. This is very unique and makes the
video look very interesting. This is done specifically
for the target audience. The darkness and black and
dark shades add to the theme
of rock in a clever way. The
drummer’s face is rarely shown as
the lighting is intentionally
directed to hide his face and only
show the movement of his
hands.
6. A range of shots have been combined
together to portray the bands style.
Iconography is another of Andrew Goodwin’s
7 conventions and these medium shots, close
ups and extreme close ups show the bands
rock style. The top picture shows the lead
singer in a vest and black skinny jeans, the
bottom right shows him in a tatty denim
jacket from a close up and the bottom right
close up of the lead guitarist shows his hand
with a tattoo on. All of these are conventional
in the style of rock and roll performers. The
shots and props have been successfully
selected to emphasise the genre, the bands
style and to appeal to the target audience.
7. In the video there is a relationship between lyrics
and visuals. This is a convention of music videos.
For example:
“Just because we share a ring, doesn’t man you
don’t know how to make me scream.”
There is a close up of the woman holding a ring to
the singer’s face as he is tied down. It shows her
aggression but also has a direct link with the lyrics.
Similarly, there is a relationship between the music
and the visuals, another convention. We see each
of the performers in turn playing along to the song.
For example medium shots of the guitar and base
players accurately and realistically playing along
with the song.
8. Here is a collection of interesting shots at various
points in the video. I like the top one as the light
has been positioned behind him to create a
silhouette as he sings along to the song. The
drummer also appears to be hiding in the shadows
for most of the song. The lighting creates a similar
silhouette of the drummer. The medium shots of
the base player are interesting as they don’t show
his face clearly, but the bass is in full focus which
draws the focus of the audience when they are
watching it.
