This last chapter is different from the others. Instead of introducing a new area of critical thinking, it is a capstone activity in which you will apply the skills you've learned to one contemporary, controversial issue.
The topic for this case study is global climate change. Because it is beyond the scope of this course to thoroughly evaluate a complex scientific topic, you will not be expected to form a position or offer your opinion on this topic. Rather, the material in this chapter is presented for you to practice evaluating arguments, identifying fallacies, and questioning sources—with the hope that you will continue to apply these skills whenever you encounter material aimed to persuade.
This chapter won't present any new exposition. Instead, we provide some relevant review notes that have been excerpted from the earlier chapters. You can consult these notes if you need a refresher as you work through the final videos, articles, and questions in the course.
REVIEW NOTES
Arguments
To say that something is true is to make a claim. But to give reasons to believe that it is true is to make an argument. Thus all arguments consist of at least two parts:
1. premise – one or more reasons to support the claim
2. conclusion – the claim being supported
Common Fallacies
Fallacy:a type of flawed reasoning
1. Begging the question: fallacy where the argument relies on a premise that resembles the conclusion, depends on the conclusion, or is as controversial as the conclusion.
2. Appeal to popularity: fallacy where the arguer attempts to bolster his or her argument by mentioning that "everybody" (or a large group of people) shares the same belief, preference, or habit.
3. Post hoc ergo propter hoc: fallacy where the arguer assumes that because there is a correlation between two events (i.e., one preceded the other), then the first must have caused the second. The phrase is Latin for "after this, therefore because of this."
4. Appeal to ignorance: fallacy where the arguer claims that because something cannot be proven false, it must be true unless the opponent can disprove the conclusion.
5. Appeal to emotion: fallacy where the arguer tries to persuade the audience by arousing feelings such as pity, fear, patriotism, flattery, etc. in lieu of presenting rational arguments.
6. Unqualified authority: fallacy where the arguer tries to get people to agree by appealing to the reputation of someone who is not an expert in the field or otherwise qualified to prove that something is true.

Think about the processes of forming a judgment and persuading others in your professional environment. Construct a 2- to 3-paragraph essay intended to persuade someone to agree with your position on a particular topic. Be sure to identify the topic and cite and explain the evidence you consider supportive of your position.
Make reference to the 11 guidelines for constructing persuasive arguments, and apply two to three of them in your response.
GUIDELINE 1: RESPECT YOUR AUDIENCE
This guideline may sound idealistic, but it is eminently practical. If you believe the people you are trying to persuade are doltish or intellectually dishonest, you are bound to betray that belief, if not directly then indirectly in your tone or choice of words. Moreover, they will generally sense your disparaging view of them and feel hurt or resentful, hardly the kind of reaction that will make them open to persuasion.
GUIDELINE 2: UNDERSTAND YOUR AUDIENCE’S VIEWPOINT
Many people make the mistake of thinking that knowing their own viewpoint is all that is necessary to be persuasive. “What my readers think about the issue is really irrelevant,” they reason. “All that matters is what I’m going to get them to think.” In addition to being pompous, this attitude ignores two crucial points. First, people’s views matter very much to them, and when others refuse to acknowledge this fact they feel offended. Second, we must know where people stand before we can hope to reach them.
Situation 1: You are writing for a single reader who has presented his or her ideas in an article, book, speech, or conversation. Review what your reader said, noting not only the person’s position but also the reasoning that supports it. Determine both the strengths and the weaknesses of the person’s position.
Situation 2: You are writing for a single reader who has not, to your knowledge, expressed a view on the issue in question. Suppose, for example, you are writing a letter to the president of a company objecting to

Beginning from a position of agreement with your reader is not an arbitrary requirement or a matter of courtesy or good form. It is a simple matter of psychology. If you begin by saying—in effect, if not directly—”Look here, you are wrong, and I’m going to show you,” you push your readers to defensive if not outright hostile reactions. They are likely to read the rest of your paper thinking not of what you are saying but of ways to refute it, concerned with measuring only the weaknesses of your argument. And if they are unreasonable and unbalanced in their reading, the fault will be more yours than theirs.

9.4 Confronting Disagreement
By employing the principles of accuracy and charity, and by effectively criticizing arguments, there can be constructive disagreement that avoids heated emotions and verbal aggression.
Mastering the skills of identifying and constructing arguments is not easy, but at this stage you should feel fairly confident in your command of such skills. The big test now is how you will react when someone disagrees with your argument or when you disagree with someone else’s argument. Although advancing an argument does not require an interaction, as mentioned in Chapter 2, disagreements are bound to occur. Many of us likely prefer to avoid disagreements. Indeed, many people are terrified of debating a point because they fear offending others or worry that a debate will only bring out the worst in everyone, quickly escalating into an emotional display of verbal aggression and “I’ll show you!” attitudes on both parts. Few truly gain from or enjoy such an exchange. This is why most people avoid addressing touchy subjects during holiday dinners: No one wants a delicious meal to end with unpleasantness. However, few gain from allowing contested issues to go unchallenged, either, whether you are simply stewing in resentment over your uncle’s unenlightened remark about a group of people or whether society fails to question a wrongheaded direction in public policy. Not knowing how to disagree in a calm, productive manner can be quite problematic. We should recognize, however, that some do like the tension of the battle and find the raising of voices and the test of quick retorts very exciting. Even so, all they gain is the confirmation that they can win by being the loudest, most articulate, or most aggressive. Unfortunately, this is an illusion, since quieting the opposition does not amount to having convinced them.
The solution to this common problem is threefold. The first part involves clearly articulating premises, examining the coherence of the argument, and identifying the support for each claim. This part is the most technically difficult but is already within your reach, thanks to the standard argument form. As we have discussed throughout this book, being able to draw an argument buried underneath filler sentences, rhetorical devices, and such allows us to grasp the meaning and coherence of what is being communicated. In this section, we will closely examine another factor in identifying arguments: the correct interpretation of an argument. We will call this the principle of accuracy.
The second part is not technically difficult, because it is an attitude or state of mind. In ordinary idiomatic language, it is referred to as giving a person the benefit of the doubt, letting someone have his or her say, or putting suspicion aside. In other words, we should judge others and their ideas fairly, even if we may be less than inclined to do so. Philosophers call this attitude the principle of charity.

Here are some angles:
1. All organizations need good two-way communication to succeed. It
is difficult to envision how can this be achieved in the absence of a
democratic culture.
2. Many organizations require secrecy in order to function properly.
But secrecy seems to be in conflict with democracy, because it limits
information to some decision-makers.

GUIDELINE 1: RESPECT YOUR AUDIENCE
This guideline may sound idealistic, but it is eminently practical. If you believe the people you are trying to persuade are doltish or intellectually dishonest, you are bound to betray that belief, if not directly then indirectly in your tone or choice of words. Moreover, they will generally sense your disparaging view of them and feel hurt or resentful, hardly the kind of reaction that will make them open to persuasion.
GUIDELINE 2: UNDERSTAND YOUR AUDIENCE’S VIEWPOINT
Many people make the mistake of thinking that knowing their own viewpoint is all that is necessary to be persuasive. “What my readers think about the issue is really irrelevant,” they reason. “All that matters is what I’m going to get them to think.” In addition to being pompous, this attitude ignores two crucial points. First, people’s views matter very much to them, and when others refuse to acknowledge this fact they feel offended. Second, we must know where people stand before we can hope to reach them.
Situation 1: You are writing for a single reader who has presented his or her ideas in an article, book, speech, or conversation. Review what your reader said, noting not only the person’s position but also the reasoning that supports it. Determine both the strengths and the weaknesses of the person’s position.
Situation 2: You are writing for a single reader who has not, to your knowledge, expressed a view on the issue in question. Suppose, for example, you are writing a letter to the president of a company objecting to

Beginning from a position of agreement with your reader is not an arbitrary requirement or a matter of courtesy or good form. It is a simple matter of psychology. If you begin by saying—in effect, if not directly—”Look here, you are wrong, and I’m going to show you,” you push your readers to defensive if not outright hostile reactions. They are likely to read the rest of your paper thinking not of what you are saying but of ways to refute it, concerned with measuring only the weaknesses of your argument. And if they are unreasonable and unbalanced in their reading, the fault will be more yours than theirs.

9.4 Confronting Disagreement
By employing the principles of accuracy and charity, and by effectively criticizing arguments, there can be constructive disagreement that avoids heated emotions and verbal aggression.
Mastering the skills of identifying and constructing arguments is not easy, but at this stage you should feel fairly confident in your command of such skills. The big test now is how you will react when someone disagrees with your argument or when you disagree with someone else’s argument. Although advancing an argument does not require an interaction, as mentioned in Chapter 2, disagreements are bound to occur. Many of us likely prefer to avoid disagreements. Indeed, many people are terrified of debating a point because they fear offending others or worry that a debate will only bring out the worst in everyone, quickly escalating into an emotional display of verbal aggression and “I’ll show you!” attitudes on both parts. Few truly gain from or enjoy such an exchange. This is why most people avoid addressing touchy subjects during holiday dinners: No one wants a delicious meal to end with unpleasantness. However, few gain from allowing contested issues to go unchallenged, either, whether you are simply stewing in resentment over your uncle’s unenlightened remark about a group of people or whether society fails to question a wrongheaded direction in public policy. Not knowing how to disagree in a calm, productive manner can be quite problematic. We should recognize, however, that some do like the tension of the battle and find the raising of voices and the test of quick retorts very exciting. Even so, all they gain is the confirmation that they can win by being the loudest, most articulate, or most aggressive. Unfortunately, this is an illusion, since quieting the opposition does not amount to having convinced them.
The solution to this common problem is threefold. The first part involves clearly articulating premises, examining the coherence of the argument, and identifying the support for each claim. This part is the most technically difficult but is already within your reach, thanks to the standard argument form. As we have discussed throughout this book, being able to draw an argument buried underneath filler sentences, rhetorical devices, and such allows us to grasp the meaning and coherence of what is being communicated. In this section, we will closely examine another factor in identifying arguments: the correct interpretation of an argument. We will call this the principle of accuracy.
The second part is not technically difficult, because it is an attitude or state of mind. In ordinary idiomatic language, it is referred to as giving a person the benefit of the doubt, letting someone have his or her say, or putting suspicion aside. In other words, we should judge others and their ideas fairly, even if we may be less than inclined to do so. Philosophers call this attitude the principle of charity.

to "unpack" the term 'democratic': what does it really mean? What
does it imply?
Here are some angles:
1. All organizations need good two-way communication to succeed. It
is difficult to envision how can this be achieved in the absence of a
democratic culture.
2. Many organizations require secrecy in order to function properly.
But secrecy seems to be in conflict with democracy, because it limits
information to some decision-makers.
3. All organizations require obedience, yet, the obligation to obey
doesn't seem to fit well in a democratic context. (Or does it?)
4. Democracy requires compromise, yet sometimes an organization
needs "uncompromising leadership" in order to thrive. (Or not?)
5. Organizations thrive on expert decision-making, yet democracy does
not seem to be compatible with this, since everyone is involved in
the decision-making. In other words, often democratic leadership
leads to mediocrity.

like India, rapid population growth and the emphasis on extensive resource exploitation can lead
to significant land degradation, adversely affecting the region's land cover.
Therefore, human intervention has significantly influenced land use patterns over many
centuries, evolving its structure over time and space. In the present era, these changes have
accelerated due to factors such as agriculture and urbanization. Information regarding land use and
cover is essential for various planning and management tasks related to the Earth's surface,

- 2. Learning Intention: To understand the 12 principles and apply them to the real world. Success Criteria: For you to be able to consider these principles in reference to a selected text. Your Task: How much are these principles followed in our world? Where do you believe these principles need to be applied?
- 3. Principle 1: Fallibility Accept you may be wrong, come with an open mind, accept that your opponent may also be wrong, or that either of you may not hold the most defensible position. Accepting fallibility means thinking scientifically, consider the history of science as the constant updating via disproving previous held views or understandings.
- 4. Principle 2: Truth Seeking Be a lifelong learner who aims to shift their position on ideas frequently. Consider all avenues and positions, do not ignore alternative positions.
- 5. Principle 3: Clarity Avoid confusing, vague or ambiguous language or structure. Do not try to disguise your opinion or arguments. Do not fall back on references to semantic differences or linguistics.
- 6. Principle 4: The Burden of Proof The person putting forward the argument has the responsibility to attempt to prove their position with evidence, wherever possible.
- 7. Principle 5: Principle of Charity Do not mishandle or reduce the argument of your opponent, do your level best to understand and re- express their argument clearly where possible. If your opponent misspeaks or makes and error be charitable and allow them a reformulation.
- 8. Principle 6: Structural clarity Arguments should be clearly structured and well-formed, without contradictions and clear, consistent conclusions. Your argument should use valid deductive inferences.
- 9. Principle 7: Relevance Include only content relevant to your own or your opponents positions. Avoid extraneous topics or needless attacks.
- 10. Principle 8: Acceptability Evidence and reasons used should be acceptable to a mature, rational person. This also means that care is taken for evidence to be sources and cross-checked with the greatest care.
- 11. Principle 9: Sufficiency Endeavour should be taken to provide a sufficient number and weight of evidence and reasons.
- 12. Principle 10: Rebuttal A participant should rebut and respond to all anticipated serious criticisms of their argument.
- 13. Principle 11 - Concluding the Debate: Suspension of Judgement If no one clearly wins the argument or debate, judgement should be avoided if possible.
- 14. Principle 12 - Concluding the Debate: Resolution If all of the above 10 principles are met then the debate should be declared either for or against and the debate brought to a conclusion.
