You might start by discussing the composer(s) of the compositions you saw performed. A great place to start learning about them is in the Oxford Music Online for example; the UD library has access to this site. Honestly you could also try Wikipedia, although sometimes the information there can be slightly off. This should help take up a paragraph or more of your paper. -After that you might consider describing the instruments used in the concert and indicate what category they belong in according to the classification system we discussed in class; perhaps a bit about the history of the instrument. -The rest can be trying to describe the music/compositions and any opinions you might have. There are no wrong answers here, if you didn’t like the music or found it boring, that’s fine, just explaining why. Just because you don’t like something doesn’t mean you can’t have an informed opinion about it. -There is a certain “exploratory” aspect to these essays, so please feel free to ruminate. ...

Please,
avoid comparisons to subjective experiences
(“It sounds like a chase scene in a movie,” or “It makes me feel like I’m lying in a boat, watching the stars….”).
Your descriptions should be based upon
what you hear, not how it makes you feel!
Also,
avoid a blow-by-blow description of the music
, such as, “It starts with a solo flute, and then the harp comes in with an arpeggio, then the rest of the orchestra comes in. It gets loud, and then quieter, and then the flute plays another solo....” Instead, try to
sum up what you hear

Attend a live (no podcasts, etc) western classical music performance and write a typed report. Make sure to review all instructions prior to attending a performance.
Concert Guidelines:
1. The level of the performance must be college-age performers or professional—no middle/high school/etc. performances.
2. The performance must be of western art music, similar to the genres discussed in text chapters assigned in the syllabus—orchestra, chamber music, solo instrumental performances, opera, choir, ballet, musicals, etc. If you have doubts about a concert qualifying as “western art” music, e-mail the professor before attending.
3. You must attend the entire performance- no late arrivals or early departures.
Report:
Format: 2-4 pages, typed, double-spaced on 8.5 x 11 paper with one-inch margins. Report should include a title, a header with your name and the date, and page numbers.
Writing Voice and style: Your colleagues taking this class should be able to read the report and gain a clear concept of your experience. You will not need to define the terminology we have covered in class, but you do need to keep in mind that your audience will not HEAR this concert and will rely on a sense of the experience solely from your descriptions. This paper should have an academic style- formal, with no contractions used.
Content: The report is YOUR observations of the concert. A successful report will address these categories:
1. Performance setting and types of music: Give the date, place, and name(s) of groups performing. Briefly describe the performance setting- for example, you might include your observations on the ambiance of the performance space, performers’ attire dress, audience’s attire, etc. and how it affected your concert-going experience. A musical ethnography is a piece of writing that explores some aspect of a particular music-culture through fieldwork.
The main goal in doing musical ethnography is to come to an understanding of how an “insider” experiences their own music-culture and then to write up your findings in a way that communicates this perspective to your readers.
To gain an “insider” perspective, ethnographers must seek out first-hand experience with their subject, usually by conducting interviews with musical “insiders” and by spending time participating and observing the music-culture.
For this assignment, you will have the opportunity to choose a music-culture that interests you and research it in two ways: first-hand (via an interview and/or fieldwork) and also via secondary sources (traditional library research).
The first-hand information is the most valuable to an ethnographer, but library research will provide you with the necessary background information to design your project, formulate questions for your interviewee, and write up your findings.
Basic Requirements:
- A one-paragraph to one-page proposal of the project (which must include the name of your interviewee, your subject, and your topic)

Read the article “Doing Musical Ethnography” on BB—it provides excellent guidance for choosing a topic for your project. A good way to start is by brainstorming people that you know who are involved in music (musicians, teachers, producers, students, also active listeners and fans) or thinking of musical organizations (bands, clubs, radio stations, dance troupes, fan clubs) that you have some connection to.
Consider your own family or group of friends, and don’t be shy about asking around.
You might assume that no one in your family is musical, but a few questions can turn up some very interesting information that may lead you to your topic.
Once you choose your
subject
(the music-culture you want to explore, broadly speaking), you need to narrow down the
topic
that you want to study within that culture. For instance, let’s say you want to study the music-culture at your church, and decide to interview the choir conductor.
You will soon discover that you could talk for hours with your interviewee about numerous things:
what happens at a choir rehearsal?
Who chooses the songs that will be performed?
What is the relationship between the musical program and the religious service? Or you might ask the conductor biographical questions, or about their training, education, etc. Soon, you will have too much information and no way to organize it into a paper.

Read the article “Doing Musical Ethnography” on BB—it provides excellent guidance for choosing a topic for your project. A good way to start is by brainstorming people that you know who are involved in music (musicians, teachers, producers, students, also active listeners and fans) or thinking of musical organizations (bands, clubs, radio stations, dance troupes, fan clubs) that you have some connection to.
Consider your own family or group of friends, and don’t be shy about asking around.
You might assume that no one in your family is musical, but a few questions can turn up some very interesting information that may lead you to your topic.
Once you choose your
subject
(the music-culture you want to explore, broadly speaking), you need to narrow down the
topic
that you want to study within that culture. For instance, let’s say you want to study the music-culture at your church, and decide to interview the choir conductor.
You will soon discover that you could talk for hours with your interviewee about numerous things:
what happens at a choir rehearsal?
Who chooses the songs that will be performed?
What is the relationship between the musical program and the religious service? Or you might ask the conductor biographical questions, or about their training, education, etc. Soon, you will have too much information and no way to organize it into a paper.
The solution is to narrow down the scope before you conduct the interview, and let your questions rel.

As the music grew, Jazz continued to incorporate musical elements from other styles of music, including world music influences. Examples include Dizzy Gillespie, who collaborated with Cuban congero Chano Pozo to explore new sounds in Jazz. In the 1960’s the Brazilian music style of Bossa Nova influenced artists like Stan Getz, and became a popular new sound in Jazz. The combining of International music styles and Jazz in this way is continuing today, creating interesting new Jazz sounds.
Many international musical influences can be heard in modern Jazz music.

It is often helpful to begin with an outline and then to write a rough draft. (If your instructor hands out a printed form for concert reports, that will serve as the outline.) Next, polish and edit your draft to produce the final version. Remember to check your grammar and the spellings of names (especially foreign names) and musical terms.
Below are recommendations for the actual content of your report—what to write. Following that, there is a section on vocabulary and usages, or conventions, involved in referring to musical works—that is, how to write about music.
WHAT TO WRITE: THE CONTENT OF A REPORT
The Concert as a Whole You should begin your report with a brief description of the concert attended, including the name and type of the performing group or soloists, the place, the date and time, and the music you heard.
You will also want to note whether the performers were attempting a historically "authentic" program. For example, in music by Johann Sebastian Bach, was a harpsichord (rather than a piano) used? For a symphony by Haydn or Mozart, was the size of the orchestra reduced? Did the performers use old instruments, or reconstructions of old instruments?
Then, you may want to describe your general reaction to the concert. Did you enjoy it? Did this event make you feel like going to other concerts in the near future?

Examples include Dizzy Gillespie, who collaborated with Cuban congero Chano Pozo to explore new sounds in Jazz. In the 1960’s the Brazilian music style of Bossa Nova influenced artists like Stan Getz, and became a popular new sound in Jazz. The combining of International music styles and Jazz in this way is continuing today, creating interesting new Jazz sounds.
Many international musical influences can be heard in modern Jazz music.

WRITING A CONCERT REPORT
Instructors in introductory music courses often require students to write one or more concert reports during a semester. Here are some guidelines for the preparation of such an assignment: first, a few suggestions on working with your own notes; second, points to consider for the content of your report; third, some information about usages or conventions in writing about music; and finally, an example of a concert report.
TRANSFORMING YOUR NOTES INTO A REPORT
You should plan to expand your notes into a complete report very soon after the concert—the same evening or during the next day or so.
It is often helpful to begin with an outline and then to write a rough draft. (If your instructor hands out a printed form for concert reports, that will serve as the outline.) Next, polish and edit your draft to produce the final version. Remember to check your grammar and the spellings of names (especially foreign names) and musical terms.
Below are recommendations for the actual content of your report—what to write. Following that, there is a section on vocabulary and usages, or conventions, involved in referring to musical works—that is, how to write about music.
WHAT TO WRITE: THE CONTENT OF A REPORT
The Concert as a Whole You should begin your report with a brief description of the concert attended, including the name and type of the performing group or soloists, the place, the date and time, and the music you heard.
You will also want to note whether the performers were attempting a historically "authentic" program. For example, in music by Johann Sebastian Bach, was a harpsichord (rather than a piano) used? For a symphony by Haydn or Mozart, was the size of the orchestra reduced? Did the performers use old instruments, or reconstructions of old instruments?
Then, you may want to describe your general reaction to the concert. Did you enjoy it? Did this event make you feel like going to other concerts in the near future?

In general, reliabilities less than 0.60 are considered to be poor, those in the 0.70 range, acceptable, and those over 0.80 good. Thus, the internal consistency reliability of the measures used in this study can be considered to be acceptable for the job enrichment measure and good for the other measures.
It is important to note that all the negatively worded items in the questionnaire should first be reversed before the items are submitted for reliability tests. Unless all the items measuring a variable are in the same direction, the reliabilities obtained will be incorrect.
A sample of the result obtained for the Cronbach’s alpha test for job enrichment, together with instructions on how it is obtained, is shown in Output 11.3.
The reliability of the job enrichment measure is presented in the first table in Output 11.3. The second table provides an overview of the alphas if we take one of the items out of the measure. For instance, it is shown that if the first item (Jobchar1) is taken out, Cronbach’s alpha of the new three-item measure will be 0.577. This means that the alpha will go down if we take item 1 out of our measure. On the other hand, if we take out item 3, our alpha will go up and become 0.851. Note that, in this case, we would not take out item 3 for two reasons. First, our alpha is above 0.7 so we do not have to take any remedial actions. Second, if we took item 3 out, the validity of our measure would probably decrease. We did not include item 3 for nothing in the original measure!
If, however, our Cronbach’s alpha was too low (under 0.60) then we could use this table to find out which of the items would have to be removed from our measure to increase the interitem consistency. Note that, usually, taking out an item, although improving the reliability of our measure, affects the validity of our measure .

Formal Essay #3: Reporting Information/The Expository Essay
Expository writing is a staple of academic writing. Throughout your academic and professional career, you will be called on to write hundreds of expository articles, reports and essays. A thorough knowledge of this writing form will hold you in good stead all through your career.
What is Expository Writing?
‘Expository’ is a synonym of ‘explanatory’. An expository essay is a piece of writing that explains or informs. It should be based on fact and free of the writer’s prejudices. Opinion is often expressed, but only if it is backed by fact. For example, if someone asked you to write an essay on the causes of World War II, you would write about Germany’s losses in World War I, the Treaty of Versailles, the fall of the Weimar Republic, and the rise of Hitler led Nazism. Thus, if you were to say that the Treaty of Versailles was the chief cause of World War II, you would first talk about the conditions of the Treaty of Versailles, the financial condition of Germany after WWI, the ineffectiveness of the Weimar Republic, and how they all led to the rise of Nazism.
Structurally, a piece of expository writing has the following components:
An
introduction
that introduces the central idea you will discuss in the essay.
The
main body
that presents evidence to back up the idea. This is the meat of the essay.
A
conclusion
that presents your idea again in the light of the evidence.
Thus, the central thrust of expository writing should be to build towards proving an argument, fact by fact, piece of evidence by piece of evidence. You will use expository writing a lot throughout your academic life. Most essays that you write in college will be expository in nature. Most writing that you will do in your professional life will involve a lot of expository content as well. In other words, sharpening up this skill will serve you well throughout your life.

- 1. Rubric for Concert Paper Papers are due Friday. April 22nd by 13:00p.m. The paper must be double-spaced 2.5-page concert review. You might start by discussing the composer(s) of the compositions you saw performed. A great place to start learning about them is in the Oxford Music Online for example; the UD library has access to this site. Honestly you could also try Wikipedia, although sometimes the information there can be slightly off. This should help take up a paragraph or more of your paper. -After that you might consider describing the instruments used in the concert and indicate what category they belong in according to the classification system we discussed in class; perhaps a bit about the history of the instrument. -The rest can be trying to describe the music/compositions and any opinions you might have. There are no wrong answers here, if you didn’t like the music or found it boring, that’s fine, just explaining why. Just because you don’t like something doesn’t mean you can’t have an informed opinion about it. -There is a certain “exploratory” aspect to these essays, so please feel free to ruminate.
