Day centres provide an important service for many older people, but the sector faces challenges. Currently there are around 3,500 day centres nationwide that are well-used and easily accessible, providing activities like bingo. In contrast, there are only 8 national pilots of a newer Link Age Plus model, and most counties have fewer than 10. The future of day centres is uncertain as many can now only be accessed through a social care assessment. Going forward, diversity among centres is important but also maintaining a common standard of quality. Day centres give people places to stop along the way and remain vital, such as through offering arts activities.
