To operate PostgreSQL efficiently, you need to have insight into database performance and make sure it is at optimal levels.
With that in mind, we dive into monitoring PostgreSQL for performance in this webinar replay.
PostgreSQL offers many metrics through various status overviews and commands, but which ones really matter to you? How do you trend and alert on them? What is the meaning behind the metrics? And what are some of the most common causes for performance problems in production?
We discuss this and more in ordinary, plain DBA language. We also have a look at some of the tools available for PostgreSQL monitoring and trending; and we’ll show you how to leverage ClusterControl’s PostgreSQL metrics, dashboards, custom alerting and other features to track and optimize the performance of your system.
AGENDA
- PostgreSQL architecture overview
- Performance problems in production
- Common causes
- Key PostgreSQL metrics and their meaning
- Tuning for performance
- Performance monitoring tools
- Impact of monitoring on performance
- How to use ClusterControl to identify performance issues

SPEAKER
Sebastian Insausti, Support Engineer at Severalnines, has loved technology since his childhood, when he did his first computer course (Windows 3.11). And from that moment he was decided on what his profession would be. He has since built up experience with MySQL, PostgreSQL, HAProxy, WAF (ModSecurity), Linux (RedHat, CentOS, OL, Ubuntu server), Monitoring (Nagios), Networking and Virtualization (VMWare, Proxmox, Hyper-V, RHEV).
Prior to joining Severalnines, Sebastian worked as a consultant to state companies in security, database replication and high availability scenarios. He’s also a speaker and has given a few talks locally on InnoDB Cluster and MySQL Enterprise together with an Oracle team. Previous to that, he worked for a Mexican company as chief of sysadmin department as well as for a local ISP (Internet Service Provider), where he managed customers' servers and connectivity.

Data Quality With or Without Apache Spark and Its EcosystemDatabricks
Few solutions exist in the open-source community either in the form of libraries or complete stand-alone platforms, which can be used to assure a certain data quality, especially when continuous imports happen. Organisations may consider picking up one of the available options – Apache Griffin, Deequ, DDQ and Great Expectations. In this presentation we’ll compare these different open-source products across different dimensions, like maturity, documentation, extensibility, features like data profiling and anomaly detection.
Speaker: Jay Runkel, Principal Solution Architect, MongoDB
Session Type: 40 minute main track session
Track: Operations
When architecting a MongoDB application, one of the most difficult questions to answer is how much hardware (number of shards, number of replicas, and server specifications) am I going to need for an application. Similarly, when deploying in the cloud, how do you estimate your monthly AWS, Azure, or GCP costs given a description of a new application? While there isn’t a precise formula for mapping application features (e.g., document structure, schema, query volumes) into servers, there are various strategies you can use to estimate the MongoDB cluster sizing. This presentation will cover the questions you need to ask and describe how to use this information to estimate the required cluster size or cloud deployment cost.
What You Will Learn:
- How to architect a sharded cluster that provides the required computing resources while minimizing hardware or cloud computing costs
- How to use this information to estimate the overall cluster requirements for IOPS, RAM, cores, disk space, etc.
- What you need to know about the application to estimate a cluster size
Fine-tuning Group Replication for PerformanceVitor Oliveira
This presentation is an overview of Group Replication from the perspective of performance optimization. It shows the main moving parts, the available options and how they can be used to tune its behaviour, and also a few significant benchmark results.

Instead of manually setting up a Spark Infrastructure, worrying about scaling out and scaling down, managing data stored in a shared memory, and taking care of it's back up too, Databrick provides an alternative. Databricks allows the developers to worry about the code that will run on the Spark cluster, and not the cluster's infrastructure. It creates an envelope around Spark, abstracting all the Infrastructure requirements from the Developer. Not only the cluster, Databricks also manages the shared FileSystem that will be used for storing the data. It provides notebooks that can be used to run spark code interactively, in multiple languages. A user can also leverage Databrick's Spark-submit job feature.
How Netflix Tunes EC2 Instances for PerformanceBrendan Gregg
CMP325 talk for AWS re:Invent 2017, by Brendan Gregg. "
At Netflix we make the best use of AWS EC2 instance types and features to create a high performance cloud, achieving near bare metal speed for our workloads. This session will summarize the configuration, tuning, and activities for delivering the fastest possible EC2 instances, and will help other EC2 users improve performance, reduce latency outliers, and make better use of EC2 features. We'll show how we choose EC2 instance types, how we choose between EC2 Xen modes: HVM, PV, and PVHVM, and the importance of EC2 features such SR-IOV for bare-metal performance. SR-IOV is used by EC2 enhanced networking, and recently for the new i3 instance type for enhanced disk performance as well. We'll also cover kernel tuning and observability tools, from basic to advanced. Advanced performance analysis includes the use of Java and Node.js flame graphs, and the new EC2 Performance Monitoring Counter (PMC) feature released this year."
A look at what HA is and what PostgreSQL has to offer for building an open source HA solution. Covers various aspects in terms of Recovery Point Objective and Recovery Time Objective. Includes backup and restore, PITR (point in time recovery) and streaming replication concepts.
Modeling Data and Queries for Wide Column NoSQLScyllaDB
Discover how to model data for wide column databases such as ScyllaDB and Apache Cassandra. Contrast the differerence from traditional RDBMS data modeling, going from a normalized “schema first” design to a denormalized “query first” design. Plus how to use advanced features like secondary indexes and materialized views to use the same base table to get the answers you need.
MySQL performance can be improved by tuning queries, server options, and hardware. Traditionally it was an area of responsibility for three different roles: Development, DBA, and System Administrators. Now DevOps handle these all. But there is a gap. Knowledge gained by MySQL DBAs after years or focusing on a single product is hard to gain when you focus on more than one. This is why I am doing this session. I will show a minimal but most effective set of options to improve MySQL performance. For illustrations, I will use real user stories gained from my Support experience and Percona Kubernetes operators for PXC and MySQL.

High Performance Object Storage in 30 Minutes with Supermicro and MinIORebekah Rodriguez
The Supermicro Cloud DC is the perfect combination of performance, reliability, craftsmanship and flexibility for deploying MinIO object storage. MinIO on the Cloud DC platform outperforms and is more cost-effective than equivalently-sized hardware from other manufacturers. We recently benchmarked a cluster of four Cloud DC servers with NVMe drives and measured an impressive 42.57 GB/s average read (GET) throughput and 24.69 GB/s average write (PUT) throughput. This first class performance demonstrates that MinIO on Supermicro Cloud DC is a compelling solution for object storage intensive workloads such as advanced analytics, AI/ML and other modern, cloud-native applications.
In this webinar, you will learn:
Best use cases and deployment considerations for MinIO object storage

What CloudStackers Need To Know About LINSTOR/DRBDShapeBlue
Philipp explains the best performing Open Source software-defined storage software available to Apache CloudStack today. It consists of two well-concerted components. LINSTOR and DRBD. Each of them also has its independent use cases, where it is deployed alone. In this presentation, the combination of these two is examined. They form the control plane and the data plane of the SDS. We will touch on: Performance, scalability, hyper-convergence (data-locality for high IO performance), resiliency through data replication (synchronous within a site, 2-way, 3-way, or more), snapshots, backup (to S3), encryption at rest, deduplication, compression, placement policies (regarding failure domains), management CLI and webGUI, monitoring interface, self-healing (restoring redundancy after device/node failure), the federation of multiple sites (async mirroring and repeatedly snapshot difference shipping), QoS control (noisy neighbors limitation) and of course: complete integration with CloudStack for KVM guests. It is Open Source software following the Unix philosophy. Each component solves one task, made for maximal re-usability. The solution leverages the Linux kernel, LVM and/or ZFS, and many Open Source software libraries. Building on these giant Open Source foundations, not only saves LINBIT from re-inventing the wheels, it also empowers your day 2 operation teams since they are already familiar with these technologies.
Philipp Reisner is one of the founders and CEO of LINBIT in Vienna/Austria. He holds a Dipl.-Ing. (comparable to MSc) degree in computer science from Technical University in Vienna. His professional career has been dominated by developing DRBD, a storage replication software for Linux. While in the early years (2001) this was writing kernel code, today he leads a company of 30 employees with locations in Austria and the USA. LINBIT is an Open Source company offering enterprise-level support subscriptions for its Open Source technologies.

MongoDB has taken a clear lead in adoption among the new generation of databases, including the enormous variety of NoSQL offerings. A key reason for this lead has been a unique combination of agility and scalability. Agility provides business units with a quick start and flexibility to maintain development velocity, despite changing data and requirements. Scalability maintains that flexibility while providing fast, interactive performance as data volume and usage increase. We'll address the key organizational, operational, and engineering considerations to ensure that agility and scalability stay aligned at increasing scale, from small development instances to web-scale applications. We will also survey some key examples of highly-scaled customer applications of MongoDB.

Improving Transactional Applications with AnalyticsDATAVERSITY
Today, most web and mobile applications are limited to "lightweight" analytics because general-purpose databases can be optimized for transactional or analytical workloads, but not both - and since transactional processing is critical, applications have to compromise on analytics.
However, what if an e-commerce application could let customers know which products are soon to be sold out based on clickstream data, shopping carts, current inventory and recent purchases as well as historical buying patterns and emerging shopping trends?
In this webinar, attendees will learn how to leverage MariaDB ColumnStore to provide transactional applications with real-time analytics on historical data.

How to Position Your Globus Data Portal for Success Ten Good PracticesGlobus
Science gateways allow science and engineering communities to access shared data, software, computing services, and instruments. Science gateways have gained a lot of traction in the last twenty years, as evidenced by projects such as the Science Gateways Community Institute (SGCI) and the Center of Excellence on Science Gateways (SGX3) in the US, The Australian Research Data Commons (ARDC) and its platforms in Australia, and the projects around Virtual Research Environments in Europe. A few mature frameworks have evolved with their different strengths and foci and have been taken up by a larger community such as the Globus Data Portal, Hubzero, Tapis, and Galaxy. However, even when gateways are built on successful frameworks, they continue to face the challenges of ongoing maintenance costs and how to meet the ever-expanding needs of the community they serve with enhanced features. It is not uncommon that gateways with compelling use cases are nonetheless unable to get past the prototype phase and become a full production service, or if they do, they don't survive more than a couple of years. While there is no guaranteed pathway to success, it seems likely that for any gateway there is a need for a strong community and/or solid funding streams to create and sustain its success. With over twenty years of examples to draw from, this presentation goes into detail for ten factors common to successful and enduring gateways that effectively serve as best practices for any new or developing gateway.

Climate Science Flows: Enabling Petabyte-Scale Climate Analysis with the Eart...Globus
The Earth System Grid Federation (ESGF) is a global network of data servers that archives and distributes the planet’s largest collection of Earth system model output for thousands of climate and environmental scientists worldwide. Many of these petabyte-scale data archives are located in proximity to large high-performance computing (HPC) or cloud computing resources, but the primary workflow for data users consists of transferring data, and applying computations on a different system. As a part of the ESGF 2.0 US project (funded by the United States Department of Energy Office of Science), we developed pre-defined data workflows, which can be run on-demand, capable of applying many data reduction and data analysis to the large ESGF data archives, transferring only the resultant analysis (ex. visualizations, smaller data files). In this talk, we will showcase a few of these workflows, highlighting how Globus Flows can be used for petabyte-scale climate analysis.
