Status Of female in fankenestein
Status of Female in
frankenstein
Elizabeth
Levenza
Justine Mortiz
Caroline
Beaufort
Elizabeth
Levenza
She is an orphan girl, four
to five years younger than
victor, whom frankenstein
adopt. Elizabeth embodies
the novel’s motif of
passive women.
Justine Mortiz
A girl adopted in to
frankenstain’s household while
victor is growing up.
Caroline
Beaufort
The daughter of Beaufort. After her
father’s death, caroline is taken in
by, and latter marries,
Role of Female
:-
First Caroline Beaufort Frankeinstein’s
father first encountered while she was
tendering to her dying father with great
tenderness. she is an exceptional women.
“Her soft and benevolent mind” ultimately
allows her to marry frankeinstein’s father.
Even in the ultimate trial, her own death,
Beaufort shows no sign of character flaws
or common weakness.
For Beaufort , it was a necessity, a passion, for her to
act.. it is her divine duty that she encounters Elizabeth.
“she
Her divine imagery is continued when Beaufort
describes as a “ blessings’’ on their family.
Woman portrays as wonderful but dependent on the
men for provision.
Novel as attempting to usurp the role of women by new
life.
But shelley’s query is not man usurping woman but of
mankind usurping God.
Justine serves perfect character in the novel.
Elizabeth describes her as “ softness and
winning mildness”
In the face of injustice , justine submits to the
judical system, saying
“ I must be condemned, although I would
pledge my slevation on my innocence “
One question arouses that
whether her submissive nature is a result
of gender or class ?
Passive women:-
 The novel littered with passive women who
suffer calmly and then expire.
 Beaufort is a self-sacrificing mother who dies
taking care of her adopted daughter.
 justine is executed for murder , despite her
innocence; the creation of the female
monster is aborted by victor.
 Elizabeth waits, impatient but helpless for victor
to return to her, and she is eventually murdered
by the monster.
Symbolic significance of the death of female
figure
The Death of justine
Her death is symbolic of the terrible
insignificance of her and the overall
repression of female by victor
The Death of Elizabeth
The Death of passive Elizabeth
symbolize the sexual inequality of the
novel’s female character. Elizabeth
becomes sacrificial victim to male’s ego.
Women were presented as intelligent and
submissive. So we can say that she
presents the creture as the way she saw
women in her society.
