Roger and Me is the story of Michael Moore's quest to right the wrong done to Flint, Michigan by
Roger Smith, CEO of General Motors. GM factories closed down in Flint, resulting in
unemployment for of thousands of workers. These laid off auto workers are products of generations
of auto workers. GM has been a Flint way of life since the factories first opened. But, finding that
operation and labor costs were substantially less in Mexico, Roger Smith filled for bankruptcy and
closed the plants down. The consequences of this shut–down were devastating to Flint. The rat
population exceeded that of humans, houses were abandoned, and families who couldn't afford the

The substance of Moore's documentary is made up of interactive interviews. On page fourty–four,
Nichols writes of the Interactive Mode: " The filmmaker's voice could be heard as readily as any
other, not subsequently in an organizing voice–over commentary, but on the spot, in face–to–face
encounter with others. The possibilities of serving as mentor, participant, prosecutor, or provocateur
in relation to the social actors recruited to the film are far greater than the observational mode would
suggest."
In Roger and Me, Michael Moore interviews many laid off auto workers, the city council of Flint,
Michigan, representatives of upper–class Flint, and in the end, he finally speaks briefly with Roger
Smith. In the majority of these interviews, Moore is actively involved, either in a visual or audio
sense.
Moore's substantial involvement in the film does cause it to cross into the Reflexive mode of
Documentary. As Michael Moore takes center stage, acting as hero for his hometown of Flint he
employs the stylistic reflexive mode of documentary. Nichols writes on page sixty of Representing
Reality,
"The reflexive mode of representation gives emphasis to the encounter between filmmaker and
viewer rather than filmmaker and subject."
Moore acts as the narrator/protagonist throughout Roger and Me, ushering the viewer on a guided
tour of his observations and actions. This is a potentially dangerous role to play as a filmmaker.

Flint, Michigan, it seems, is no longer part of the GM plan. To GM's board, Flint is not very
important anymore, it does not need Flint at this point. The board believes it is in GM's best interest
to get the lower priced workers from Mexico, therefore hurting Flint.
This is an example of the conflicts between what workers want and what their employers want.
The textbook says, "It is inherent in the process of profit making and places workers and their
employers in opposing positions." (pg. 182) The company just wants to make money and to build
there new factories and invest in these new endeavors, is good for the company. GM is making
more money. Where the workers obviously want to keep their jobs and not have GM move plants to
Mexico.
That is one of my inherent problems with capitalism. Capitalism is not for the benefit of all
humans, it is for the benefit of the directors, management, and the owners of these huge companies.
GM would not have lost money if it kept the Flint plants open. Nevertheless, the GM board of
directors chose to close them and essentially ruin the city. It is clear that GM's board of directors

245 in rural and small town communities across the United States (Huling, 198). The rise

piece here is that Flint workers were incarcerating their former automobile factory co–workers. Sold
on the idea that prison jobs were "family–sustaining ones" (Che, 814), i.e. good benefits and a
pension, not unlike the once stable auto–manufacturing jobs Flint used to have (Often the jobs were
not as good or as entry level as advertised). Now the only solution to unemployment was essentially
incarcerating friends. Incarceration is dehumanizing; it is turning individuals into capital to fill the
beds of private prisons. It is rather ironic that Flint auto–mobile workers, who built cars that
seemingly liberated individuals from geography and the urban degradation, were now locking up and
cutting away the other's freedoms. And at the same time, prisons helped to distance the wealthy from
the poor and black inner city masses.
The creation of private spaces illuminated class inequality. Moore's major mission of the film was to
track down General Motor's GM Roger Smith and convince him to come to Flint, Michigan to see the
damage his factory shutdowns created. Throughout the trek, Moore visits country and athletic clubs,
the GM headquarters, Holiday conventions, and a Great Gatsby themed party to talk to Smith. At
