This document provides an introduction and overview of the World Happiness Report 2016 Update. It summarizes the report's three main chapters:
1. Chapter 2 analyzes the distribution of happiness around the world using life evaluation surveys. It finds differences in average happiness and inequality levels across countries and regions. Inequality of well-being is proposed as a new way to measure inequality.
2. Chapter 3 argues for promoting secular ethics based on the principle of greatest happiness. It discusses the need for secular organizations to support ethical living.
3. Chapter 4 examines the relationship between happiness, sustainable development, and the UN's Sustainable Development Goals. It presents evidence that sustainable development helps explain differences in happiness between countries.

More than 700 migrants have lost their lives when their overcrowded boat capsized off Libya in a major tragedy this week. The Mediterranean Sea has become a vast watery graveyard for illegal migrants.
Italy accuses other countries of not doing enough to stop the flood of illegal immigrants. European Union (EU) countries seem to have decided not to take part in any rescue operations in the Mediterranean Sea to save the lives of illegal immigrants. EU fears that rescue operations will encourage more people to opt for the dangerous sea journey in search of a better life and future in its member countries.
Because of wars, poverty and political uncertainty, thousands of people in the Middle East and Africa are trying to reach Europe by sea. According to an estimate, 140,000 people have tried to reach Italy and other European countries this year alone. More than 3,500 people have lost their lives during the perilous sea journey to Europe.
The UN and the world community are not doing enough to stop the flow of illegal immigrants. Without solving the basic causes, we will not be able to stop illegal immigration.

This document discusses using phylogenetic diversity estimated from genomics to assess the structure of biological communities. It defines phylogenetic diversity and introduces PhyloH, a program for measuring phylogenetic diversity. It provides an example use case applying PhyloH to analyze the microbiomes of bee larvae and their parasites to examine the factors influencing beta diversity across bee hives, cells, and species.
This document summarizes an ncRNA analysis pipeline called nc-aReNA. It describes how nc-aReNA can be used to classify and analyze small non-coding RNAs from deep RNA sequencing data. The pipeline performs tasks such as adapter removal, quality control checks, mapping reads to reference databases to identify known ncRNA classes, filtering of rRNA sequences, quantification of ncRNA expression, differential expression analysis, and identification of isomiRs. Two test cases demonstrating ncRNA classification and differential expression analysis using nc-aReNA on mouse datasets are also described.
The document discusses ELIXIR, the European infrastructure for biological information. ELIXIR aims to build a sustainable infrastructure to support life science research and its translation to various sectors. It coordinates existing bioinformatics services across Europe. The Italian node of ELIXIR (ELIXIR-ITA) coordinates domestic bioinformatics resources and connects them to the broader ELIXIR network. It works to aggregate and integrate Italy's small but excellent bioinformatics community and supports the large amount of data being generated through high-throughput sequencing platforms in Italy.
This document describes a bioinformatics approach for prioritizing disease-causing human mitochondrial DNA mutations. It uses a "disease score" that averages the probabilities from six pathogenicity prediction methods to determine if a mutation is deleterious or benign. The approach was trained on 53 known disease-associated mutations and tested on 1872 observed mutations, achieving a disease score cutoff of 0.4311. Mutations meeting criteria of being rare, conserved, predicted pathogenic and occurring at low variability sites were prioritized. When tested on 21 tumor samples, 8/268 prioritized nonsynonymous mutations were tumor-specific, confirming the approach's ability to identify potentially pathogenic mutations.
The document describes a clinical genomic solution for accurate screening and interpretation of structural genetic variants. It consists of a collaborative workflow between clinicians and laboratories using a portal and bioinformatic pipeline. The portal allows clinicians to enter patient phenotypes and launch genomic tests, while receiving medical reports. The pipeline analyzes copy number variations from microarray data using multiple databases to classify variants and evaluate pathogenicity. This integrated solution aims to simplify the diagnosis process and reduce analysis time.
The document describes a new database called ComiRNet that uses an integrative data-mining approach to discover microRNA-gene regulatory networks. It uses a semi-supervised learning method called HOCCLUS2 to extract overlapping biclusters from predicted and validated miRNA-mRNA interactions. These biclusters represent potential regulatory networks. The database contains over 5 million predicted interactions between miRNAs and mRNAs organized into 15 hierarchical levels of biclusters. ComiRNet aims to help elucidate miRNA functional roles and mechanisms in biological processes.
The document summarizes a study that characterized mitochondrial DNA (mtDNA) mutations in glioblastoma multiforme (GBM), the most common and malignant primary brain cancer. The study sequenced the mtDNA of 45 GBM tumor samples and their matched blood samples, identifying 1366 shared non-tumor specific mutations and 1218 exclusive tumor-specific mutations. Of the tumor-specific mutations, 18 had high heteroplasmy levels. The study also sequenced 104 fresh-frozen GBM samples, identifying 951 mtDNA variants including 150 non-synonymous mutations. However, survival analysis found no significant difference between patients with or without deleterious mtDNA mutations, suggesting mtDNA genotyping may not predict GBM prognosis.
This document summarizes research on analyzing differential miRNA-mRNA co-expression networks in colorectal cancer. The researchers analyzed paired expression data from cancer and normal tissues to identify changes in interactions. They found that cancer networks have decreased connectivity and identified differentially connected genes, including known cancer genes. Pathway analysis revealed an alteration in colorectal cancer tissues in the interplay between miRNAs and the eukaryotic translation initiation factor 3 complex, which is important for translation. Certain miRNAs were also identified as having many differentially co-expressed target mRNAs.

The document discusses various techniques for characterizing biological entities using data mining. It describes discovering frequent syntactic structures in biomedical literature that link entities like mutations and proteins. It also covers extracting bio-molecular events and entities from text, discovering miRNA-mRNA interaction networks through biclustering approaches, and using protein-protein interaction networks to predict gene functions in a hierarchical multi-label classification setting. Finally, it outlines the IS-BioBank project which aims to enable interoperability between biological data sources to support analysis of cancer microenvironments.
