Roald Amundsen was a Norwegian polar explorer who was the first person to reach both the North and South Poles. In 1903-1906, he led the first expedition to successfully navigate the Northwest Passage. In 1911, he led an expedition that became the first to reach the South Pole on December 14, 1911, beating Robert Falcon Scott's expedition by over a month. Amundsen kept his plans to aim for the South Pole secret to maintain a competitive advantage over other explorers.
