4. ROAD ALIGNMENT
Observations:
• Acceleration/Deceleration lanes are not
provided as per IRC SP-99-2013, Clause
3.3.8
Reason for Concern:
• Traffic entering the expressways are at low
speeds which could lead to conflicts
Recommendation:
• As the expressway is already constructed &
operational, a good option will be to have a
speed restriction zone before & after the entry
& exits
Priority:
• Essential
Entry/ Exit Lanes
5. As per standards, following Acceleration/ Deceleration
lengths have to be provided for expressway at entry & exit
6. Clear Zone
Observations:
• Clear zones are insufficient at certain
locations
• Unauthorised median opening is observed
Reason for Concern:
• There would be no safety zone for the
errant vehicles
• Vehicles from service road will directly
enter into expressway
Recommendation:
• Speed restriction zone should be provided
• Unauthorised median opening should be
closed
Priority:
• Highly Desirable
7. Bus Stop Layout & Location
Observations:
• Bus Stops are located on adjacent to the
carriageway
• Buses Stopping on Carriageway near FOBs
• Bus Stops do not have Acceleration /
Deceleration lane
Reason for Concern:
• Sudden stopping of buses increase chances of
rear end collisions.
• Bus Stops should not be a reason for slow down
of fast moving vehicles
Recommendation:
• Bus Stops to be relocated to service roads
• One or two bus stops which are for long distance
buses on expressway to be provided with
accelaration /decelaration lanes
Priority:
• Highly Desirable
8. Service Roads
Observations:
• Traffic plying on Service roads is
bidirectional
Reason for Concern:
• As the traffic is bidirectional, too many
conflicts are observed while entering &
exiting the expressway
• VUP constructed under the
expressway doesn’t have sufficient
Sight distance
Recommendation:
• The service roads can be made
unidirectional as VUPs are provided in
this expressway
Priority:
• Essential
9. Road Signs
Observations:
• Most of Signs provided are not as per
IRC Standards
Reason for Concern:
• The retro reflectivity of the
background supersedes the actual
signs to be conveyed
Recommendation:
• All signages have to be replaced with
standard sign boards as per IRC
67:2012
Priority:
• Highly Desirable
10. Markings & Lighting
Observations:
• Lights are placed away from the main
carriageway
• Trees are causing obstruction to lighting
• Road Markings are faded
Reason for Concern:
• Possibility of Insufficient lighting
• Without road marking and Studs, there
is less guidance to traffic during night
Recommendation:
• Minimum required illumination of 40 Lux
shall be ensured as per IRC SP 99:
2013 , Clause 12.4.17.(iv)
• Road Markings to be provided as per
IRC 35: 2015
Priority:
• Highly Desirable
11. Road side Hazards
Observations:
• Advertisement boards, Foot over
Bridges & Gantry Sign boards are
found adjacent to the carriageway
Reason for Concern:
• As it is expressway with high speed
traffic, the structures could be
hazardous
Recommendation:
• The Structures or Sign posts to be
relocated away from the shoulder
• Hazard marker/Retro reflective
sheeting to be provided
Priority:
• Highly Desirable
12. Crash Barrier
Observations:
• End treatment of MCB is not done
• The height of MCB is almost at the
ground level
Reason for Concern:
• The MCB without end treatment is
hazardous to the road user.
• Low height of MCB doest not serve
its purpose & chances of toppling of
vehicles during a crash
Recommendation:
• MCB have to be provided as per IRC -
119:2015
Priority:
• Highly Desirable
13. Pavement surface
Observations:
• Bleeding was observed at most of the
locations.
Reason for Concern:
• Possibility of skidding during rainy
season
Recommendation:
• Necessary treatment for bleeding to
be carried out.
Priority:
• Highly Desirable
14. Plantations
Observations:
• Trees are observed before the MCB
• Trees obstructing the view of
Signboards
Reason for Concern:
• Trees before MCB are hazardous to
the road users
• Signage not visible to the road user
Recommendation:
• Remove/ Replace the trees which are
in front of the crash barrier
• Trimming of the plants on median to
be done periodically
Priority:
• Highly Desirable
15. Distraction to
Drivers
Observation : Advertisement boards are given priority than
informatory boards
Reason for Concern: Distraction to drivers
Recommendation: The advertisement boards shall be removed and
priority to be given for Informatory & direction sign
boards
16. Enforcement
Observation : 2 & 3 wheelers on Express way
Reason for Concern: Lower category vehicles on
expressway
Recommendation: Placement of Highway Patrol
vehicles to restrict the 2 & 3 wheelers
17. Awareness
Observation : Lane discipline not practiced
Reason for Concern: Slow moving vehicles are using the lane meant for
Fast moving vehicles
Recommendation: Awareness/ Enforement for practice of Lane
discipline
21. Road Signs
Observations:
• Signs provided are not as per IRC Standards and
are wrongly placed
• Sign boards are placed at the edge of the junction
• At signalised intersection “ STOP” sign is placed
• Median opening sign board is placed before the
intersection
Reason for Concern:
• Gives wrong message to the road user
• Sign board to be placed minimum 50 m before
the junction
Recommendation:
• All signages have to be replaced with standard
sign boards as per IRC 67:2012
Priority:
• Highly Desirable
22. Direction Sign Boards
Observations:
• Directional Board are damaged
• Directional Board are not clearly
visible
Reason for Concern:
• Purpose of providing sign board is not
accomplished
Recommendation:
• To be replaced with new board
• Trees should be periodically trimmed
Priority:
• Highly Desirable
23. Road Markings
Observations:
• Road Marking is faded
Reason for Concern:
• No Proper Guidance to the
pedestrians
Recommendation:
• Road Markings to be provided as
per IRC 35: 2015
Priority:
• Essential
25. Pedestrian Facilities
Observations:
• Depth of the footpath is around 500 mm
• Median opening and pedestrian markings are not aligned
• Discontinuous footpath
Reason for Concern:
• Pedestrians awaiting for bus occupying a lane of the MCW
• Causes confusion in crossing the road
• Pedestrians walking on the MCW
Recommendation:
• Minimise the depth of the footpath as per IRC Standards
• Provide the pedestrian crossing marking near to the median
opening
• Pedestrian footpath to be continued by procuring the land.
Priority:
• Highly Desirable
26. Road side Hazards
Observations:
• Open drains on footpath observed
• Trees adjacent to the MCW
Reason for Concern:
• Possibility of pedestrian falling into the
drain
• Possibility of vehicles hitting the tree
in Night
Recommendation:
• Drains on the footpath should be
closed.
• Tree to removed or Retro reflective
sheeting to be provided
Priority:
• Highly Desirable
27. Work Zone
Observations:
• Open drain work in progress
• Exposed reinforcement
• No barriers / Warning about work in
progress
• No PPE provided to the workers
Reason for Concern:
• Safety hazard for inattentive
pedestrians/ in poor visibility
conditions
Recommendation:
• Barrier and signs needs to be
provided.
• PPE to be provided to the workers
Priority:
• Immediate
28. Pavement surface
Observations:
• Pot holes observed on the road
Reason for Concern:
• Possibility of overturning of two
wheelers
Recommendation:
• Necessary treatment should be
carried out whenever observed.
Priority:
• Desirable
