This document discusses road safety in India. It notes that over 137,000 people die in road accidents in India each year, more than the number killed in all wars. The top causes of accidents include distracted driving, speeding, drunk driving, and reckless behavior. It then explains some basic road markings like solid and dashed lines as well as their meanings. Yellow lines indicate no passing zones. Box junctions are high traffic areas where no vehicle should remain for long. The 3-second rule for following distance is also covered. The document ends by listing some measures the government is taking to enhance safety as well as steps individuals can take like getting supervised practice, wearing seatbelts, and calling for help in emergencies.

An astonishing, first-of-its-kind, report by the NYT assessing damage in Ukraine. Even if the war ends tomorrow, in many places there will be nothing to go back to.
2. Why there is needof Road
Safety?
• Over 1,37,000 people were killed in road
accidents in 2013 alone in India, that is
more than the number of people killed in
all our wars put together.
• 377 people die every day in India,
equivalent to a jumbo jet crashing every
day.
• The total no. of deaths due to road
accidents all over the world is more than
the total population of Mauritius.
• The global annual cost due to Road traffic
accidents is 230000million US Dollars.
• Sadly,India with 1% of world’s vehicles
accounts for 10% of world road
accidents…
3. But why so much accidents?
1. Distracted Driving
2. Speeding
3. Drunk Driving
4. Reckless Driving
5. Rain
6. Running Red Lights
9. Night Driving
4. Some Basic Knowledge about Road Laws.
• Roads Markings
• 3 Second Rule
• Some common myths …
5. Road Marking
Following are the road markings:
• White Solid Line
• White Dashed Line
• Yellow Line
• Box Junction
• Lane Arrows
6. White Solid line
They line the edges of the road, mark out
intersections and indicate where and when to take
extra caution.
• Horizontal solid lines (stretching across your
path) warn of obstacles that can cross a
vehicle's path. You'll see them just before
intersections
• Several horizontal solid lines in quick succession
are called rumble strips. These are typically
placed on highways or roads with high speed
limits to alert the driver of an impending
obstacle like a turn or intersection. They're like
little speed bumps and make a rumbling sound
when a vehicle travels over them, hence the
name
• Vertical solid lines (stretching with the flow of
traffic) mark the edges of lanes.
7. White Dashed Line
• These marks indicate the center
of the road.
• Horizontal dashed lines mark out
areas where caution must be
exercised. Areas with these lines
typically don't have signs or
signal lights. ‘
• Vertical dahsed lines mark out
lanes
8. Yellow Line
• Solid yellow lines indicate
where passing is strictly
prohibited, not even if it looks
clear.
• Double yellow lines mean it is
strictly prohibited for
vehicles on either lane to
overtake.
9. Box Line
• They mark out areas of high traffic flow
in multiple directions. As such, no vehicle
is allowed to stay in this box for a
prolonged period of time.
• When approaching a box junction, look
ahead and make sure there is enough
space on the other side of the
intersection for your car, before
proceeding
11. 3 Second Rule
The 3-second rule in driving is a
way to ensure that you're driving at
a safe speed and adequate
following distance from the vehicle
before you.
To determine the right
following distance, first select a
fixed object on the road ahead of
your vehicle such as a building,
road sign, tree or overpass.
When the vehicle ahead of you
passes the object, slowly count
"one one thousand, two one
thousand, three one thousand"
12. What measures government is taking?
i) Various steps to enhance road safety such as road furniture, road markings/road signs, introduction of
Highway Traffic Management System using Intelligent Transport System, enhancement of discipline among
contractors during construction, road safety audit on selected stretches, have been undertaken by
National Highways Authority of India.
i) Refresher training to Heavy Motor Vehicle drivers in the unorganized sector.
iii) Involvement of NGOs for road safety activities by Department of Road Transport and Highways and
National Highways Authority of India.
iv) Setting up of Driving Training School in the country.
v) Publicity campaign on road safety awareness through audio-visual-print media.
vi) Institution of National Award for voluntary organizations/individual for outstanding work in the field of
road safety.
vii) Tightening of safety standards of vehicles.
viii) Provision of cranes and ambulances to various State Governments/NGOs under National Highway
Accident Relief Service Scheme. National Highways Authority of India also provides ambulances at a
distance of 50 Km. on each of its completed highways under its Operation & Maintenance contracts.
ix) Widening and improvements of National Highways from 2 lanes to 4 lanes and 4 lanes to 6 lanes etc.
13. What we can do to prevent roadaccident…
• Develop the right attitude about
driving.
• Get as much supervised practice
driving as possible.
• ALWAYS wear your safety belt.
• In case of accident ,you could go
call 1033 ,which is a toll free road
accident service no.
