Rizal left the Philippines to study abroad in Spain due to being disgusted with the racist teachings at the University of Santo Tomas. His secret mission was to observe European cultures and societies to help liberate the Filipino people from Spanish rule. He traveled extensively, first stopping in Singapore and Sri Lanka before arriving in Europe and studying in Madrid. While abroad, he immersed himself in his studies, the arts, and the Filipino community while maintaining his nationalistic goals of reform.

was bound for Singapore, without disclosing his decision to his parents.
Only his brother Paciano and a few other people knew about his secret

15. On May 26, 1882, Paciano advised Rizal to finish his medical
course in Madrid and so Rizal went there.
Rizal enrolled in the Universidad Central de Madrid on
November 3, 1882 and took two courses — Medicine and
Philosophy and Letters.
He studied painting and sculpture in the Academy of Fine
Arts of San Fernando.
He also took French, German, and English lessons under
private instructors.
He practiced fencing and shooting in the Hall of Arms of
Sanz y Carbonell.

16. Rizal lived a very simple or strict life with no luxuries for he
was there to study and prepare himself for service to his
fatherland.
He lived frugally and never wasted a peseta (former standard
monetary unit of Spain) for gambling, wine and woman.
Rizal, being a lonely young man in a foreign country, he
became attracted to Consuelo Ortega y Perez, a woman
of beauty and vivacity.
He composed a lovely poem entitled "A La Seniorita C. O.
y P." on August 22, 1883 dedicated to her, and expressed
his admiration to her.

17. However, before his romance with Consuelo could blossom into a
serious affair, he suddenly back out for two reasons: (1) he was still
engaged to Leonor Rivera and (2) his friend and co-worker in the
Propaganda Movement, Eduardo de Lete, was madly in love with
Consuelo and he had no wish to break their friendship because of a
pretty girl.

18. Beecher Stowe’s "Uncle Tom’s Cabin" and Eugene Sue’s "The
Wondering Jew" were the two books that aroused the
sympathy of Rizal for the oppressed and unfortunate people.

19. Rizal journeyed in Paris from June 17, 1883 to August 20,
1883, where he enjoyed the attractive sights of Paris.
He improved his mind there by observing closely the French
way of life.
He commented in a letter to his family that “Paris is the
costliest capital in Europe”.

20. March 1883, Rizal joined the Masonic lodge called Acacia
in Madrid.
He transferred to Lodge Solidaridad (Madrid), where he
became a Master Mason on November 15, 1890.
February 15, 1892, he was awarded the diploma as Master
Mason by Le Grand de France in Paris.
His only Masonic writing was a lecture entitled “Science,
Virtue and Labor”, which he delivered in 1889 at Lodge
Solidaridad, Madrid.

21. Failure of harvest of rice and sugarcane due to drought and
locusts.

Due to hard times in Calamba, the monthly allowances of
Rizal in Madrid were late in arrival and there were times when
they never arrived, causing much suffering to him.
On June 24, 1884, Rizal was unable to take breakfast and
with an empty stomach, he attended his class at the
University, participated in the contest in Greek language and
won the gold medal.

22. The banquet on the evening of June 25, 1884, was
sponsored by the Filipino community to celebrate the double
victory of the Filipino artist in the National Exposition of Fine
Arts in Madrid — Luna’s "Spolarium" winning first prize and
Hidalgo’s "Christian Virgins Exposed to the Populace",
second prize.
He saluted Luna and Hidalgo as the two glories of Spain and
the Philippines, whose artistic achievements of the victory of
the two Filipino artist.

24. On November 20, 21, and 22 of the year 1884, the serene
city of Madrid exploded in bloody riots by the students of the
Central University, where Rizal and other Filipino students
participated.
The root cause was the condemnation of the Catholic Church
to Dr. Miguel Morayta, a history professor, because of his
speech that portrayed a liberal view. He was
excommunicated together with those who applauded him,
which angered the students and caused violent
demonstrations.

25. He was conferred the degree of Licentiate in Medicine by
the Universidad Central de Madrid on June 21, 1884 and
finished the degree of Doctor of Medicine in the following
academic year.
By obtaining the degree of Licentiate in Philosophy and
Letters, he became qualified professor of humanities in any
Spanish University.
"My doctorate is not of very much value to me... because
although it is useful to a university professor, yet I believe
they will never appoint me as such in the College of Santo
Tomas.
