What is Research?What is Research?
Research means:
 to search for something new for understanding the
truth or acquisition of knowledge about particular
things.
 to find out the solution of a problem in subjects or
issues which may be pure scientific subjects, socio-
historical subjects and so on.
17/05/2015 2Ritimoni Bordoloi
Nature of ResearchNature of Research
 Research should always be scientific and
empirical in nature.
 should be valid and reliable
 should be Flexible
 requires expertise
 establishes relationship (cause and effect)
between the two or more variables.
 research involves gathering of both primary and
secondary data
17/05/2015 3Ritimoni Bordoloi
Steps of General Research:Steps of General Research:
 Finding an area
 Identifying the problem
 Realisation of the problem
 Collecting the review of related literature
 Using methodologies
 Explanation and interpretation of the data
 Drawing the conclusion
 Policy issues or policy making

Types of ResearchTypes of Research
 Research is considered in terms of two types:
Basic or Fundamental research
Action or Applied research
 Basic or fundamental research is also called pure
research that requires universal validity, originality,
imagination and inventiveness.
 Action research is called applied research that
indicates immediate application for immediate
solution of a problem.
17/05/2015 5Ritimoni Bordoloi
Application of Action and AppliedApplication of Action and Applied
ResearchResearch
 Although action research is called applied
research, there is a slight difference between the
two in terms of application.
 Applied research can be used to probe the
practical problems in a wider context while the
action research is to be used to probe the
problems in the classroom situation only.
17/05/2015 6Ritimoni Bordoloi
Action ResearchAction Research
This research helps a practitioner
 to perceive a problem
 to understand and assess the situation
 to work out plausible reasons
 to facilitate a systematic analysis, and
 to find out the alternative strategies for overcoming
the unsatisfactory condition within a short period of
time
17/05/2015 7Ritimoni Bordoloi
Action ResearchAction Research
 Action research is useful in bringing certain
amount of improvement or changes in the
operation areas.
 The practitioners have direct control or
responsibility.
 Action research is applied fruitfully in a subject
like education in order to find out the solutions in
its different aspects.
 Action research is decision-oriented research.
17/05/2015 8Ritimoni Bordoloi
Action Research inAction Research in
EducationEducation
 The practitioner may be a classroom teacher, a
principal, a headmaster of a school, a block education
officer, programme officer of education, a teacher-
educator at the DIET and Teacher Training Institution
and so on.
 Action research is for professional development of the
teacher.
17/05/2015 9Ritimoni Bordoloi
Action Research inAction Research in
EducationEducation
 Action research is conducted to require the remedial
measures in order to remove the unsatisfactory
conditions that arise while functioning of the school.
 Action research can be used to solve the academic
and other related problems in the school.
 Action research is done when the problem is
specific and has the clear vision.
 Action research is undertaken for identifying and
understanding the needs of the learners.

Example of Action ResearchExample of Action Research
in Educationin Education
For example, in a particular classroom, a teacher
makes his or her best efforts to develop competency
in English among his student, but the effort could not
bring the required success. Even the teacher is not
able to identify the cause or reasons for the non-
performance of the students in that subject. So, in
this case, the teacher may undertake action
research.
17/05/2015 11Ritimoni Bordoloi
Types of Action Research in EducationTypes of Action Research in Education
 Single Teacher or Individual action plan:
The previous example is appropriate for this
research.
 Collaboration action plan:
This plan stresses the identification of a
common problem, involves one classroom or
many classrooms and then plan accordingly for
deriving the solution to the problem or its
improvement.—say make functional literacy
among the girl child from class I to IV of a
school.
17/05/2015 12Ritimoni Bordoloi
Types of Action Research in EducationTypes of Action Research in Education
• School wise action research:
This focuses on a common issue or problem of a
school. Lack of parental involvement in the
school activities, improving the performance in the
school are the common issues which are undertaken
by this research. In this research, the staff of the
school work together as a team.
17/05/2015 13Ritimoni Bordoloi
Types of Action Research in EducationTypes of Action Research in Education
District wise action research:
 Issues are mainly community based,
performance based or based on the processes for
decision making. A district may be chosen to
address a problem which is common to several
schools in a particular district. It requires the
involvement of DIET, Teacher training Institutions
etc.
17/05/2015 14Ritimoni Bordoloi
Action Research may consist ofAction Research may consist of
issues in Education like:issues in Education like:
 Study of the reasons for drop out from the classroom
and how to motivate the students to enroll.
 The role of teacher to make the children functionally
literate considering education as a fundamental right.
 To find out the effectiveness of the teacher in his/her
teaching.
 Various programmes undertaken by SSA, RMSA can
be evaluated or assessed through the action research.
 Empowering the teachers, enhancing their capacity to
bring out improvement in the education system etc.
17/05/2015 15Ritimoni Bordoloi
Steps that are specifically followed inSteps that are specifically followed in
Action ResearchAction Research
 Identification of a problem
 Defining, analyzing and explaining the problem
 Stating the probable causes of the problem
 Formulation of hypothesis
 Gathering the data
 Planning, organizing, implementation and
evaluation
 Drawing conclusion and taking decision and sharing
the results
 Evaluating the results in order to make it better from
time to time
17/05/2015 16Ritimoni Bordoloi
ConclusionConclusion
Thus, action research is a methodology which can
be used by the teacher as an action researcher or
as a practitioner in order to bring out improvement
in the education system.
