Editor's Notes

  1. Good Morning and WelcomeMy name is Rikin Patel and today I will be giving a talk on Titan, Saturn’s largest moon, with a focus on some surface features and the methane cycle present there
  2. Kuiper and CassiniAstronomer Kuiper first detected methane on Titan spectroscopically in 1944Cassini-Huygens radar images confirmed dark seas of “sand” identified as organic or organic-coated water-ice crustal compositionPrimarily N2-Titan is ~90%-Earth is 78%Methane AND Ethane vs. Water-Earth’s hydrological cycle involves only water processes-Titan’s cycle involves both methane and its photochemical product ethane-While ethane mechanically behaves as a fluid identically with methane, and is fully mixed with it, it does not participate in the gaseous phase of the hydrological cycle through evaporation and condensation on the same timescales and with the same mass flux as methane. (implications unexplored)Methane as an erosive agentDendritic and possible ground-sapping featuresTerrains cut by fluvial featuresNorthern hemisphere radar-dark features resembling hydrocarbon liquid basinsConvective cloud structures at south poleVery dark spots at south pole during early springMethane cloud at 8-km altitudeDetection of methane and ethane vaporizing from a relatively high thermal-conductivity surface
  3. LEFT)-Image taken from Huygens probe-depicts dark dendritic channels from about 6.5 km in altitude-elongated bright island is about 2 km longRIGHT)-Images taken by Huygens probe at the surface-depicts larger smooth surface rocks, largest of which are about 15 cm across-”no doubt whatsoever that fluvial action has modified Titan’s surface”
  4. Cassini radar image of impact crater Menrva (440km diameter); to the west is a limited set of fluvial channels, whereas to the east is a more extensive fluvial network ElivagarFluminaSuch branching, shallow channels are characteristic of violent flows associated with heavy rains (i.e., flash floods). In sum, it is clear that rainstorms have occurred in Titan’s past and left their scars on the landscape.
  5. map of more than 600 lake and sea features observed by the Cassini radar system in the high northern latitudes of Titan. B) dark lakes are blue, granular lakes are cyan, and bright lakes are red. The color around lakes indicate the angle of incidence
  6. Cassini radar image in which liquid, appearing dark, submerges a hilly terrain possibly dissected by fluvially generated valleys. region with dendritic features feeding into and out of a lake; the “island” in the middle is 90km x 150km
  7. Elements of Titan’s methane cycle known or strongly suspected to be present, along with timescales for: destruction of methane (107 – 108 years)cyclical humidificaton of low latitudes (100-1000 years)seasonal cycling of methane between the poles (10-100 years).
