Allan Kelly - Dialogue Sheets for retrospectives and discussionDevConFu
Retrospectives are a key tool in the Agile toolkit. But, they aren't easy. Some teams do them regularly - but they can become boring and repetitive. Other teams don't do them - they lack the time, the energy or they don't have a suitable facilitator.
In fact its not just retrospectives. Teams need to learn to talk, discuss, reflect together over many things. Good conversation makes for good software.
Retrospective Dialogue Sheets can help overcome these problems. These are a new tool in the Agile toolkit to inject some fun and variety into retrospectives. Teams which have tried dialogue retrospectives report higher energy levels, more inclusive discussions and innovative findings. And all this without a retrospective facilitator!
This is a hands on session, everyone will get a go at working with a dialogue sheet and will learn what a dialogue sheet is and how to use one. After everyone has had a chance to try a Dialogue Sheet Allan will discuss some of the ways teams are using dialogue sheets and look to the future.
About the session:
- Participants are divided into teams of between 3 and 8 and given an A1 sheet to work with
- Teams discuss the questions on the sheet and write their answers directly on the sheet
- Teams review each others sheets and discuss the technique
Running order:
- 10 minutes introduction to sheets and creating groups
- 50 to 60 minutes for teams to complete the sheet
- 20 to 30 minutes for review and discussion
The kick-off meeting is the team’s first introduction to the project
and It’s the formal beginning of both the planning phase of the project management process and the forming stage of the team-development process.
Group Interaction Patterns - The Keys for Highly Productive Teams (Better Sof...Michael R. Wolf
Development teams often fail to recognize the complex group interactions and multi-person relationships that are critical to build and maintain a highly productive team. Instead, they adopt follow-the-crowd practices such as stand up meetings or Kanban boards without understanding the underlying fundamentals. Michael Wolf introduces group interaction patterns of highly productive development teams to provide a framework for understanding group interactions and a vocabulary for discussing ways to improve. Michael will facilitate a highly-experiential introduction to techniques from 4 group work practices:
* Liberating Structures
* The Core Protocols
* Group Works Card Deck (& Group Works Pattern Language)
* Personal Kanban

A good advice to any ScrumMaster is ”Ask the team!”. In order to do so a ScrumMaster needs to be equipped with knowledge in the art of powerful questions. A ScrumMaster also needs to be equipped with good listening skills.
With strong listening skills the ScrumMaster can empower the team and let it have the voice and own the problem. This presentation will help readers take further steps towards perfection of their listening skills.

Agile-Friendly User Research. Nina Belk, UX People, 2013Nina Belk
“It takes too long." "We don’t have the budget." "We don’t really need it, we can just optimise once we’ve gone live.” Sound familiar?
As UX embraces agile as a project delivery approach, research seems get left out in the cold. Rather than shivering and complaining about it though maybe we just need to stick two fingers up to these assumptions and dare to do things a little differently!
In her workshop at UX People, Nina helped delegates explore how to bring research in from the cold on agile projects. There were tips on getting the research basics right (effective participant recruitment and facilitation techniques), and delegates were given the opportunity to road-test their facilitation and analysis skills in an agile-friendly framework (full exercises not available in this presentation).
If you're looking to arm yourself with some practical skills, and a research approach that will blow those assumptions about speed, cost and the lack of value out of the water then this workshop would have been for you, but you'll have to make do with this SlideShare presentation instead!

Effective Application Security in Software Delivery lifecycle using Deployment Firewall and DBOM
The modern software delivery process (or the CI/CD process) includes many tools, distributed teams, open-source code, and cloud platforms. Constant focus on speed to release software to market, along with the traditional slow and manual security checks has caused gaps in continuous security as an important piece in the software supply chain. Today organizations feel more susceptible to external and internal cyber threats due to the vast attack surface in their applications supply chain and the lack of end-to-end governance and risk management.
The software team must secure its software delivery process to avoid vulnerability and security breaches. This needs to be achieved with existing tool chains and without extensive rework of the delivery processes. This talk will present strategies and techniques for providing visibility into the true risk of the existing vulnerabilities, preventing the introduction of security issues in the software, resolving vulnerabilities in production environments quickly, and capturing the deployment bill of materials (DBOM).
Speakers:
Bob Boule
Robert Boule is a technology enthusiast with PASSION for technology and making things work along with a knack for helping others understand how things work. He comes with around 20 years of solution engineering experience in application security, software continuous delivery, and SaaS platforms. He is known for his dynamic presentations in CI/CD and application security integrated in software delivery lifecycle.
Gopinath Rebala
Gopinath Rebala is the CTO of OpsMx, where he has overall responsibility for the machine learning and data processing architectures for Secure Software Delivery. Gopi also has a strong connection with our customers, leading design and architecture for strategic implementations. Gopi is a frequent speaker and well-known leader in continuous delivery and integrating security into software delivery.
Securing your Kubernetes cluster_ a step-by-step guide to success !KatiaHIMEUR1
Today, after several years of existence, an extremely active community and an ultra-dynamic ecosystem, Kubernetes has established itself as the de facto standard in container orchestration. Thanks to a wide range of managed services, it has never been so easy to set up a ready-to-use Kubernetes cluster.
However, this ease of use means that the subject of security in Kubernetes is often left for later, or even neglected. This exposes companies to significant risks.
In this talk, I'll show you step-by-step how to secure your Kubernetes cluster for greater peace of mind and reliability.
Why You Should Replace Windows 11 with Nitrux Linux 3.5.0 for enhanced perfor...SOFTTECHHUB

Removing Uninteresting Bytes in Software FuzzingAftab Hussain
Imagine a world where software fuzzing, the process of mutating bytes in test seeds to uncover hidden and erroneous program behaviors, becomes faster and more effective. A lot depends on the initial seeds, which can significantly dictate the trajectory of a fuzzing campaign, particularly in terms of how long it takes to uncover interesting behaviour in your code. We introduce DIAR, a technique designed to speedup fuzzing campaigns by pinpointing and eliminating those uninteresting bytes in the seeds. Picture this: instead of wasting valuable resources on meaningless mutations in large, bloated seeds, DIAR removes the unnecessary bytes, streamlining the entire process.
In this work, we equipped AFL, a popular fuzzer, with DIAR and examined two critical Linux libraries -- Libxml's xmllint, a tool for parsing xml documents, and Binutil's readelf, an essential debugging and security analysis command-line tool used to display detailed information about ELF (Executable and Linkable Format). Our preliminary results show that AFL+DIAR does not only discover new paths more quickly but also achieves higher coverage overall. This work thus showcases how starting with lean and optimized seeds can lead to faster, more comprehensive fuzzing campaigns -- and DIAR helps you find such seeds.

Epistemic Interaction - tuning interfaces to provide information for AI supportAlan Dix
Paper presented at SYNERGY workshop at AVI 2024, Genoa, Italy. 3rd June 2024
https://alandix.com/academic/papers/synergy2024-epistemic/
As machine learning integrates deeper into human-computer interactions, the concept of epistemic interaction emerges, aiming to refine these interactions to enhance system adaptability. This approach encourages minor, intentional adjustments in user behaviour to enrich the data available for system learning. This paper introduces epistemic interaction within the context of human-system communication, illustrating how deliberate interaction design can improve system understanding and adaptation. Through concrete examples, we demonstrate the potential of epistemic interaction to significantly advance human-computer interaction by leveraging intuitive human communication strategies to inform system design and functionality, offering a novel pathway for enriching user-system engagements.

we had our retrospective this morning … and
the difference from the last few times
was like night and day. I had some worries
[that] team members would be reluctant to
engage but found that no one held back and
everyone got involved in scribbling on the
sheet and talking about the sprint.
7. Comments #1
Afterwards I got some very
enthusiastic feedback from the
people who I'd originally worried
about!
8. Comments #2
Using the sheet definitely promoted discussion
in the retrospectives and, by bringing the focus
away from the facilitator, the team
concentrates more on the project.
9. Comments #2
The team thought it was a fun way of
doing a retrospective, it felt fresh.
When I asked them if we should try
using them in the future, the answer
was a definite yes.
10. I was a bit nervous about
trying something … but the
energy in the room was
tremendous. In fact I had
several people tell me it was
the best retrospective they
have had in years.
11. Comments #4
First let me say as a manager, I was
impressed by the Dialog Sheets, especially
in the way it provides a simple path that
pulls everyone into being a
contributor, helps analysis by
introducing/recommending tools
(Fishbone), and finally leads to action steps.
12. Comments #4
Walking around the pods, it was interesting
to see that the teams posted their
resulting sheets, and in one case had
referenced it several times during a
conversation about an issue they
were discussing.
13. Statnett - Norway
* The sheet stimulates equality among team members during the discussions,
by the fact that all must be seated around a table (no one standing up and facilitating the discussions).
…
* The sheet is very physical and with few/no barriers for participants to express
themselves on the sheet for everyone to see - even if it is only by drawing "stick men" on the edge …
* The sheet and rules (when followed) prevent the Scrum Master from falling into a
"team leaderish" role when the rest of the team gets lazy and wont't bother to involve in the process
- they all have to take their part of a common responsibility for getting through the questions and to the end of
the "game".
...and there are more.
These characteristics make our retrospective sessions less bureaucratic and more inspiring
than with our old technique. We have been using the more traditional technique for several years…
… we spend our time on issues of real value to the team instead of ceremony parts
no one really likes, and more in line with the original intentions for this session. And the sheet can
be put directly on a wall after the meeting, for everyone to see. …
14. Common reports
• Everyone gets to speak
– Even the quiet people
• Refresh retrospectives
• No facilitator changes discussion
• Energy!
