The advent of e-Learning has prompted the development of web-based learning systems, recognising there is no fixed learning pathway that will be appropriate for all learners. However, most learning platforms with personalised learning sequencing rely on a learner’s preferences.
However if we want students to be able to learn to make reliable judgements about their learning and to identify any further support they require to meet their learning goals, then personalised automatic feedback should play an important role. This presentation explores the role that technology enhanced feedback can play in the pursuit of a personalised learning agenda.

Learning analytics is the measurement, collection, analysis and reporting of student data to understand and optimize the learning process. Visualization of data plays an important role in learning analytics by making patterns in the data clear. Examples discussed include tools that analyze data from sources like LMS systems and instructor grades to provide students and teachers insights. Both educational data mining and information visualization approaches were presented as ways to apply learning analytics. The role of teachers in learning analytics was also discussed.

This session reports the results of a recent OLT-funded national exploratory study addressing the relevant factors and their impact when implementing learning analytics for student retention purposes. The project utilised a mixed-method research design and yielded a series of outputs, including the development of a non-technical overview of learning analytics, focusing on linking the fields of student retention and learning analytics resulting in an institution level survey focusing on sector readiness and decision making relating to utilising learning analytics for retention purposes. An academic level survey was administered to academic staff exploring their progress, aspirations and support needs relating to learning analytics. Follow-up interviews expanded on their experiences with learning analytics to date. An evidence-based framework was developed, mapping important factors affecting learning analytics decision making and implementation. This was illustrated by a suite of five case studies developed by each of the research partner institutions detailing their experiences with learning analytics and demonstrating why elements in the framework are important. These findings were shared and tested at a National Forum in April 2015.

Learning analytics is a 'hot topic' in education with many institutions seeking to make better use of the data available via various systems. One of the key challenges in this process is to understand the business questions that people working in various roles in institutions would like to be able to answer. However, it is also important that these questions are appropriately structured and specific in order to gather the relevant data. This session builds on the workshop run at last year's Blackboard Learning and Teaching conference where participants explored business questions and use cases for learning analytics from a range of perspectives.

1) NTU developed a student dashboard using learning analytics to improve student retention, engagement, and attainment.
2) The dashboard provides data on student engagement like library usage, VLE access, and attendance to students and staff.
3) Analysis found students with high engagement were more likely to progress to the next year and receive higher degrees.
4) Both students and staff reported changing their behaviors due to the insights from the dashboard. Students increased engagement activities while staff targeted interactions.

Learning analytics is the measurement, collection, analysis and reporting of data about learners and their contexts in order to understand and optimize the learning environment. It involves techniques from computer science, statistics, programming and other disciplines. While learning analytics can provide opportunities to give feedback and improve learning, it also poses threats regarding privacy, ethics, and the misuse of visualizations and absence of educational theory. Overall, learning analytics should be used to start conversations to improve learning rather than make definitive decisions, and it is important that the needs and experiences of learners guide its application.

Scaling up learning analytics

The promise of learning analytics is that they will enable us to understand and optimize learning and the environments in which it takes place. The intention is to develop models, algorithms, and processes that can be widely used. In order to do this, we need to move from small-scale research within our disciplines towards large-scale implementation across our institutions. This is a tough challenge, because educational institutions are stable systems, resistant to change. To avoid failure and maximize success, implementation of learning analytics at scale requires careful consideration of the entire ‘TEL technology complex’. This complex includes the different groups of people involved, the educational beliefs and practices of those groups, the technologies they use, and the specific environments within which they operate. Providing reliable and trustworthy analytics is just one part of implementing analytics at scale. It is also important to develop a clear strategic vision, assess institutional culture critically, identify potential barriers to adoption, develop approaches that can overcome these, and put in place appropriate forms of support, training, and community building. In her keynote, Rebecca introduced tools, resources, organisations and case studies that can be used to support the deployment of learning analytics at scale

Concept: Herding Cats by Team: Cool Cats
A mobile application was created to help teachers gather and analyze student data to generate reports that group students based on selected criteria such as assessments. The application aims to save teachers time by providing meaningful data for planning tailored instruction for different student groups. The problem was validated through research including a teaching panel and interviews, which confirmed that teachers need timely data but lack the time to analyze information. The application will utilize student assessment information and class rosters provided by the school district.

Teaching Scholars Program Curriculum Design to Enable Tech Integration
Dr. Janet Corral from the University of Colorado presented on a new Teacher Scholar Program (TSP) curriculum that uses a hybrid model integrating 21st century tools. The new model addresses needs like allowing more time for projects by meeting less frequently and providing more structure. It incorporates pre-activities, evaluations, and tools like learning management systems, surveys, and calendars. Early feedback showed students needing help with the learning management system initially and later with finding posts and completing projects. The design-based approach allows ongoing improvements based on feedback.

This session explores changing data sensibilities at US post-secondary institutions with particular attention paid to how predictive analytics are changing expectations for institutional accountability and student success. Results from the Predictive Analytics Reporting Framework show that predictive modeling can identify students at risk and that linking behavioral predictions of risk with interventions to mitigate those risks at the point of need is a powerful strategy for increasing rates of student retention, academic progress and completion.

Learning analytics is the measurement, collection, analysis and reporting of data about learners and their contexts in order to understand and optimize the learning environment. It involves techniques from computer science, statistics, programming and other disciplines. While learning analytics can provide opportunities to give feedback and improve learning, it also poses threats regarding privacy, ethics, and the misuse of visualizations and absence of educational theory. Overall, learning analytics should be used to start conversations to improve learning rather than make definitive decisions, and it is important that the needs and experiences of learners guide its application.

The promise of learning analytics is that they will enable us to understand and optimize learning and the environments in which it takes place. The intention is to develop models, algorithms, and processes that can be widely used. In order to do this, we need to move from small-scale research within our disciplines towards large-scale implementation across our institutions. This is a tough challenge, because educational institutions are stable systems, resistant to change. To avoid failure and maximize success, implementation of learning analytics at scale requires careful consideration of the entire ‘TEL technology complex’. This complex includes the different groups of people involved, the educational beliefs and practices of those groups, the technologies they use, and the specific environments within which they operate. Providing reliable and trustworthy analytics is just one part of implementing analytics at scale. It is also important to develop a clear strategic vision, assess institutional culture critically, identify potential barriers to adoption, develop approaches that can overcome these, and put in place appropriate forms of support, training, and community building. In her keynote, Rebecca introduced tools, resources, organisations and case studies that can be used to support the deployment of learning analytics at scale

The new model addresses needs like allowing more time for projects by meeting less frequently and providing more structure. It incorporates pre-activities, evaluations, and tools like learning management systems, surveys, and calendars. Early feedback showed students needing help with the learning management system initially and later with finding posts and completing projects. The design-based approach allows ongoing improvements based on feedback.

This session explores changing data sensibilities at US post-secondary institutions with particular attention paid to how predictive analytics are changing expectations for institutional accountability and student success. Results from the Predictive Analytics Reporting Framework show that predictive modeling can identify students at risk and that linking behavioral predictions of risk with interventions to mitigate those risks at the point of need is a powerful strategy for increasing rates of student retention, academic progress and completion.
