There are many types of rice with different grain sizes like short, medium, and long grain. Rinsing rice removes more starch by submerging and dumping it in a bowl rather than a strainer to avoid losing rice. For long grain white rice, boil it for 10 minutes then simmer for 15-20 minutes with a lid until cooked after adding oil, salt, and twice as much water as rice. Wild rice takes about 30 minutes to cook if soaked overnight or up to an hour if not soaked. Properly cooked rice can be eaten on its own or used in many dishes while under or over cooked rice can ruin a meal.

You will get more starch removed by

rinsing alone, plus you will lose some
rice in a strainer.

4. Cooking Methods
Unless you are using a rice cooker, the biggest
mistake is using a small deep pan. There is no
way to cook the rice evenly.

5. Cooking Time 1
For long grain rice, I usually boil it for 10 minutes
on a gas range and then turn the flame to it’s
lowest position for 15-20 minutes with the lid on: I
also add a tablespoon of oil and a few pinches of
salt and then stir before adding water (2x the
amount of rice)
Usually around 30 minutes
(white rice)

6. Cooking Time 2
For Minnesota Wild Rice, I usually cook it under
boiling for about an hour or so. If I soak it overnight
, it will only be about a ½ hour cook time before the
rice splits and is soft enough to use. (I like to use a
60/40 blend for wild rice soup, 40% wild)

7. After Rice is cooked
Possibilities are endless, but
uncooked or over cooked rice
will ruin a meal!

• add butter & eat
• add soy sauce & eat
• add hot mustard & eat
• Add duck sauce & eat
• add chick broth and herbs &
eat
• add to a soup
• make a soup
• make a rice hot-dish
• compliment a stir-fry
• make fried rice (requires a
day of rest and drying if you
want it to be good)
