Handout 2.2
RICE
RICE stands for read, illustrate data, calculate, and evaluate. It is a
strategy that helps students successfully solve word problems in
various areas of mathematics. In the first chunk of the strategy,
students are taught how to read a word problem and illustrate the
essential data in it. In the second chunk, students are taught how
to solve word problems using the correct mathematics operation or
concept. In the third chunk, students are shown how to check and
justify their work by using an alternate method to solve the problem.
