Biography of William Wordsworth
1770___1850
• William Wordsworth was born on 17
April,1770 in Cockermouth.
• His Mother died when he was 8 year.
• Father: John Wordsworth (1741-1783)
• Mother: Ann Cookson Wordsworth
(1748-1778)
• He became England's poet laureate in
1843
• At the age of 80, he died on April 23,
1850.
 Personification:
“My heart leaps up”
The poet’s heart jumps when he sees a rainbow
 Paradox:
“the Child is a father of the Man”
The poet uses a statement which seems to hold opposite meaning, yet
turns out to have a reasonable & sensible aim.
 Repetition:
“So was it when my life began,
So is it now I a man,
So be it when I shall grow old,”
The word “so” is repeated three times.
 Simile:
“I wandered lonely as a cloud.”
He compares his loneliness with a single cloud.
“Continues as the stars that shine.”
Wordsworth compares the endless row of daffodils with
countless stars.
 Personification:
“When all at once I saw a crowd.”
The crowd shows the number of daffodils.
“Tossing their heads and sprightly dance.”
It shows that the Daffodils are humans that can dance.
“In a jocund company.”
he considered the daffodils as his buoyant company.
 Alliteration:
“I gazed and gazed”
the use of /g/ sound
“What wealth the show to me had brought.”
the use of /w/
 Assonance:
“Ten thousand I saw at a glance”
the sound of /a/
“They stretched in never-ending.”
/e/ sound
 Consonance:
“what wealth the show to me had brought”
the sound of /t/
“in vacant or in pensive.”
/n/ sound
 Metaphor:
“They flash upon that inward eye.”
“inward eye” represents the sweet memory of daffodils.
 Imagery:
“lonely as a cloud”
“ a crowd”
“never-ending line”
”milky way”
“jocund company.”
These descriptions help the reader to imagine or feel the same joy
felt by the speaker.
 simile:
Her eyes as stars of Twilight fair;
Like Twilight's, too, her dusky hair;
in the lines comparing her eyes and hair to twilight:
 Metaphor:
comparing the woman of the poem implicitly to a phantom, apparition, and spirit
without use of explicit comparison words such as "like" or "as.“
 imagery:
the comparison of the woman to “twilight” there is no actual
description of her physical appearance.
 Amplification:
The reason firm, the temperate will,
Endurance, foresight, strength, and skill
one element of praise or noble characteristic on top of another,
