1. Review: The Descent

The Descent is a film in where a group of women are stuck inside the cave where they
face the deep dark inside of the world. I think that this is a quite good film because it
carries out the typical elements of horror such as jump scares, which were mild jump
scares, also blood and gore which considered a bit of an amount of them, also the killer,
which in this case are killers.
In the first part, I thought the movie was calm at first, despite the car crash scene and the
hospital scene which were quite tense. The first part of the movie gives us an introduction
to the main characters, which are Sarah, Juno, Beth, Hannah, Sam and Holly and we
pick up new things about each of these characters as we go along in the movie. For
example, we see that Juno is a leader and also an adulteress, because we learn that she
is secretly having an affair with Sarah’s husband. We see that at first he dies horribly with
a pole going through his head after the car crash. Also, we know how Juno dies horribly,
but we never see it on screen, we just hear Juno’s screams. Also we learn about Sarah,
that she realises and accepts any fate coming towards her, such as her daughter’s death.
We learn about the two sisters, Hannah and Sam that they abandon the others to find
their own way out, but unfortunately they both die (everyone eventually dies at the end).
We also learn about Holly, who loves to be daring in everything she does and also Beth,
who is Sarah’s best friend.
The jump scares are mild and not so intense, making me jump a little bit. The atmosphere
of the movie in the second part of the movie was eerie, making me feel a bit more tense
and ready for more jump scares.
The blood/gore was a bit graphical as some parts made me feel a bit disgusted. A part
which fully made me cringe was where Holly had fallen and she had a compound fracture
to the leg where you could see the bone sticking out and the rest of them had to hold her
and push down the bone to be able to make Holly to physically move again, but as not as
much. This part completely made me cringe horrifically, and it makes my brain think that I
am also experiencing the pain that she is going through, making me actually hold my leg.
Other gory parts, such as Holly getting her neck bitten out by the crawler made me cringe
and hold my neck a little bit, but it wasn’t as effective as the compound fracture.
At first, the first half of the movie showed how free the characters were, but the second
half, due to the characters being in a cave gave out the sense of claustrophobia. Now I
do not normally have claustrophobia, but in scenes such as where Sarah was stuck and
she had to get out as quickly as possible, it made me feel a bit uncomfortable.
The storyline to it was quite alright to be fair, I was curious of how the girls would get out
the cave. But however, I found out at the end of the movie that Sarah has to accept her
fate that she has to die. But what confused me is how it is made to look like that she has
escaped from the cave and a face pops up while she is in the car and suddenly she
wakes up from a dream and seeing her daughter with her birthday cake showing that
Sarah has to accept her fate of death and she is finally with her daughter again.
Overall, the movie was mildly scary, a lot less scary than I expected, but however I
seemed to enjoy, even though I am not really a fan of horror movies.
