The project REVEAL focuses on verifi cation technologies, tools and strategies. It aims to develop tools, components and strategies that aid journalists and Enterprise Community managers in identifying, assessing and verifying User Generated Content (UGC) on Social Networks. Main Objectives In REVEAL, we aim to reveal and analyse much more than bare content. The analysis framework for assessing the credibility of information found in Social Networks is based on three main pillars: Contributor, Content and Context. The analysis of the validity of Contributor concerns parameters such as trust, reputation and influence of an information source. Content validity is expressed through parameters such as the language used, the history and possible manipulations performed on the content. And finally, Context analysis examines whether the ‘what’, ‘when’ and ‘where’ of an online publication concur with each other. Joint analysis of the validity of Contributor, Content and Context provides a more thorough approach for revealing truthfulness. Challenges REVEAL’s challenges include (but are not limited to): - discover and analyse communities on Social Networks - access, organise and sift through huge volumes of data from multiple Social Networks - deduce contextual relationships - discover provenance of information - portray all this information in an intuitive way for users to work with - contribute to the exercise of freedom of expression and access to information while safeguarding privacy - doing all of this at scale and in real-time, supporting live breaking news stories.

Reveal project partners:

WeVerify aims to address the challenges of content verification through participatory verification, open source algorithms, and machine learning. The platform will analyze social media and web content within its broader context to expose fabricated content using cross-modal verification, social network analysis, and a blockchain database of known fakes. The key outcome will be a decentralized platform for collaborative content verification, tracking, and debunking.

Content that is posted on and shared via Social Media networks has had a profound effect on how we communicate. It changed the way information is spread and consumed dramatically. This also had significant impacts on traditional ways of information gathering and distribution. Social Media can have both positive and negative effects. It can be used for various purposes, ranging from effective disaster management to news reporting and the intentional spreading of false information such as propaganda or marketing. In order to better evaluate and classify content residing in Social Networks, it is necessary to filter and assess its information value in terms of credibility, trustworthiness, reputation, popularity, influence, authenticity and proximity. Digital Cultures of Care Seminar April 2020 at Swinburne Presenter: Dr Alexia Maddox, Lecturer, Communications SCCA, Deakin University Title: Ethics of engaging with the digital community of drug users surrounding cryptomarkets. This presentation will draw upon five studies published by researchers who engaged with drug-user populations in cryptomarkets, including my own experience of conducting ethnographically sensitised research in this space. The presentation will be structured through a consideration of four domains of ethical practice with online populations. The first ethical domain relates to researcher disclosure to the community of their presence, affiliations and intentions (overt research practice). Across the studies, these practices included direct disclosure of their researcher identity to participants, nodal disclosure of the research agenda to site admins and moderators and published disclosure of the research activity to community members through the forums. Researchers in the field need to work within clear protocols for maintaining their participants’ anonymity in their data collection and reporting process. Embedding privacy practices into the choices of technologies researchers use and engage with reduces the risk of implicating their participants. The second domain of ethical practice considered in this presentation is that the researcher should ensure confidentiality and anonymity of informants. Within the cryptomarket space and online research more generally, ensuring the confidentiality and anonymity of informants must move from the researcher management of participant identities and narratives to wider data management practices and reporting protocols. The third domain of ethical practice to be considered is conducting research with essentially a hidden and suspicious research population. This domain gives rise to a discussion of challenges relating to the disrupted nature of the cryptomarket environment which and how the researchers responded to forms of contentious visibility. Researcher bio Alexia Maddox (PhD) is a Lecturer, Communication in the School of Communication and Creative Arts at Deakin University, Australia. Her research sits at the nexus of emerging technologies, social change and social inclusion and is focused through the study of communities utilising emerging technologies to create alternative futures, including cryptocurrencies, blockchain and cryptomarkets. She has published in leading journals including Information, Communication and Society as well as journals with significant real-world engagement such as the International Journal of Drug Policy. Her scholarly monograph through Routledge, titled Research Methods and Global Online Communities: A case study illustrates for researchers how to apply research methods to studying online communities.
