What is a Military Veteran?
An individual who served in the active military, naval, or
air service and who was discharged or released under
conditions other than dishonorable.
• Active duty
• Any period of active or inactive duty for training
during which a person is disabled or dies from
• Any part-time, Reservist, National Guard, or Active
Guard/Reserves (AGR)

  • 4. Goals At the end of this seminar, participants will be able to: • Increase knowledge awareness of employment opportunities for veterans • Examine strategies to discern the military resume and qualifications. • Explore the skillsets that military veterans can add to the corporate environment. • Discuss recruitment techniques for increasing veterans in the workforce.
  • 5. What is a Military Veteran? An individual who served in the active military, naval, or air service and who was discharged or released under conditions other than dishonorable. • Active duty • Any period of active or inactive duty for training during which a person is disabled or dies from • Any part-time, Reservist, National Guard, or Active Guard/Reserves (AGR) *Source: www.va.gov

Benefits of Veteran Employees • Exposure to advanced technologies • Government-paid education and training • Experience working in remote, outdoor, and/or abnormal environments (“Semper Gumby”) • Familiarity with jobs requiring untraditional shifts • Developed sense of personal responsibility • Practical diversity • Team player • Instant network • Ability to learn quickly

Issues with Veterans and Employment • Not properly translating their experiences into civilian terms • Disregarding their employment and not being able to identify viable work experience • Issues with connecting with employers • Potential reintegration issues • Being realistic about your worth

How to Bridge the Gap The Veteran The Employer Complete a transition assistance program or finding resources that can assist in resources for transition Relating to people who do not know or understand what military personnel have experienced Complete a transition assistance program or finding resources that can assist in translating experiences into civilian terms; using resources such as SMART Transcripts Work with veteran organizations to understand certain aspects of veteran experience; do not allow a word search finder to scan all resumes Self-creating structure Providing a safe and consistent work environment Adjust to a different pace of life and work Providing a safe and consistent work environment Ask questions about employer provided services and benefits and do research Explanation of services and benefits such as health care, dental, and 401K
