Learning Objective: Increase knowledge awareness of employment opportunities for veterans in the energy field
When you get past the defense department jargon, it’s clear that the men and women returning from military service bring with them an array of skills, invaluable experience, and a work ethic second to none on the globe. Veterans return home to the United States with the knowledge that they have proven themselves in some of the most challenging remote environments in the world.
Military veterans, regardless of their particular areas of service, have all had:
• Intensive exposure to advanced technologies, even in careers in traditional "ground-pounder" forces.
• Extensive, government-paid education and training, in some of the world's best schools.
• Long experience working in remote, outdoor environments
• Extensive familiarity with jobs requiring work shifts longer than the traditional, eight-hour workday, and
• A highly developed sense of personal responsibility for the lives, welfare and safety of their colleagues, because of their training, operational requirements and the exposure of facing off against hostile foreign forces, while often at the same time facing up to unpredictable weather forces that often seem equally hostile.
This workshop will attract high interest from senior military officers as well as line and staff officer attendees.
At the end of this seminar, participants will be able to:
a. Examine strategies to discern the military resume and qualifications.
b. Explore the skillsets that military veterans can add to the corporate environment.
c. Discuss recruitment techniques for increasing veterans in the energy workforce.
The Aerospace and Defense (A&D) industry in the US designs and manufactures products that carry more than three billion passengers worldwide on any given day as well as systems which are vital to our national security. In order to transition to lead-free electronics the A&D industry demands careful analysis and research into the performance, reliability and safety of these materials in order to maintain public safety and assure our war-fighters’ mission success is not compromised or risked.
In this effort the College of Engineering at Tuskegee University and the Boeing Company has teamed to fill some of the many knowledge gaps that surround this new technology. The mechanisms of inanition and growth of tin whiskers and the Probability of occurrence of Induced Short are investigated. Since the formation of binary compounds are suspected of causing fractures in these new Pb-free solder alloys, Tuskegee is studying the migration of binary compounds as a root cause. The effects tin whiskers may have on the ability of conformal coatings to protect Circuit Boards from corrosion is also studied.
There are many challenges that armed service enlisted men and women face in transitioning into civilian employment. Despite their significant soft and technical skills, veterans show significantly higher unemployment rates than their nonveteran counterparts. The vast majority of these transitioning service members are under 30 years old; the most unemployed segment of the labor force nationwide. The goal in addressing this issue is to close the gap between veteran and non-veteran hiring.
At the end of this seminar, participants will:
a. Acknowledgement that there is no seamless path from military departure to civilian employment,
b. Understanding of the key challenges that military members face while transitioning into the workplace.
c. Discuss the values that veterans bring to the workplace.
d. Produce practical steps that key stakeholders can take to create a smooth and functioning transition system.

Up the Ratios relies on the generosity of donors and volunteers to continue our work. Contributions of time, expertise, and financial support are crucial to sustaining our programs and expanding our reach. Whether you're an individual passionate about education, a professional in the STEM field, or a company looking to give back to the community, there are many ways to get involved and make a difference.
We are proud of the positive impact we've had on the lives of countless students, many of whom have gone on to pursue higher education and careers in STEM. By providing these young minds with the tools and opportunities they need to succeed, we are not only changing their futures but also contributing to the advancement of technology and innovation on a broader scale.
Russian anarchist and anti-war movement in the third year of full-scale warAntti Rautiainen
Anarchist group ANA Regensburg hosted my online-presentation on 16th of May 2024, in which I discussed tactics of anti-war activism in Russia, and reasons why the anti-war movement has not been able to make an impact to change the course of events yet. Cases of anarchists repressed for anti-war activities are presented, as well as strategies of support for political prisoners, and modest successes in supporting their struggles.
