Museum of Contemporary Art & Planning Exhibition (MOCAPE),
Shenzhen
The MOCAPE completes the eastern part of the Futian Cultural District master plan,
which aimed to create a new urban centre with administrative, commercial and
cultural functions.

Upon entering the large interstitial space between the two museum volumes, the visitors can enter, via ramps and
escalators, to reach the main level.

From ground level, guests can access a multi-functional hall, several
auditoriums, and a library. It is accessible on several floors, a reflective
and softly deformed ‘cloud’ hosts a number of public functions such as
a café, a bookshop, and a museum store.

The facade is made of natural stone louvers
covered by insulated glass and held by an
interwoven network of extruded steel trusses.
Design strategy
The design of the culture center is designed to cater large group of visitors
and multiple functions happening at the same time. With the help of
advance and innovative construction technology the center had
successfully achieved a massive columns free shared plaza to held the
multiple programmes.

Site Condition
Jalan Tun Razak is the main ring road and orbital
highway in Kuala Lumpur and the local urban context
comprises a mixture of government buildings, cultural
monuments and major hospitals and schools.
National Theatre (Istana Budaya), Kuala Lumpur
Known as the Malaysian Palace of Culture. Located next to the National Art Gallery on Jalan Tun Razak, the main venue for all
types of theatre including local and international performances. Designed by local architect, Muhammad Kamar Ya’akub which
resembles a traditional malay house built in an urban context.

The facade design complements the facade design
of the preceding building, The National Arts Visual
Gallery by having a light-blue A-frame glass roof
which gives a subtle transition from the striking
Turquoise roof of The National Gallery.
The shape of the building portrays the ‘sirih jjunjung’, a
multi-tier floral arrangement of sirih or betel leaves
used as a symbolic piece for Malay tradition such as
weddings, festivals and welcoming ceremonies

The layout of the building is symmetrical which
shows a balance in the corresponding elements
within the site context. It is arranged equally on
both side of the central axis thus create a visual
equilibrium

The layout of the building follows the pattern of a typical Malay
house which generally has three major sections according to
the function. The frontal approach is used in this circulation
which leads directly to linear, axial path

Facade
Distinct from that stands out from the rest of the structures running along Jalan Tun Razak. The structure seems to offer a more
relaxed ‘blue-green’ ambience compared to the rest of the buildings around it.
The structure provides greater shelter away from intense sunlight due to the general layout of the large roofs above.
Protruding facade, covered with solid walls with lesser windows to remain its privacy and coziness. This is also one way used by
the architect to minimize the noise level and light penetration from the outside.

An architecture that asserts its position in the urban
fabric of Kuala Lumpur through infilling spatial and
programmatic voids.
Full utilisation of the site’s urban characteristics in
place-making, such as its long street frontage,
high accessibility and visual prominence to
establish a unique identity amidst the many
landmarks of KL City Centre.
Programs advocating sustainable humanities for
infinite period of use for people of all backgrounds
to partake and participate in.
