EXPERIENCE
(Jul 2015 - Dec 2015)
DESIGNER / IT Consultant - Viva Concepts
Design / IT Department
Handled custom designs of plastic cards and mailers using Illustrator. Later then worked on wireframes and
UI design for improved ordering system for Viva. Designed Improved User Interface in Indesign and created
editabled pdf forms which were then given to the Pgmer to implement and code into the viva website itself.
Otherwise directed the Viva IT Manager to improve Viva’s website so production was more streamlined.
Also handled smaller IT matters such as replacing harddrives in IMACs or troubleshooting network logon
issues when needed. Wrote several applescripts to automate the pdf’ing of illustrator files.
(2015 – Jul 2015)DESIGNER/PREPRESS MANAGER - Viva Concepts
Design/Prepress department
Handled typesetting and design of plastic cards/inserts as well as premedia work for materials being produced at
the company. Work included imposing files for digital printing as well as offset printing and plating files for press or
outsourcing them for printing. Modified existing applescripts which were used for imposing to cater different needs.
(2008 – 2014)PREMEDIA IN CHARGE - TRANSLATIONS UNIT
Prepress department
Wrote applescripts that streamlined production, from automatic image relinking, pdf page replacement, text
replacement for versioning of 170 locations. Automatic scripts generated HTML reports that could be inspected later.
In the time frame of almost 7 years – turned over about 500,000 pdf pages for printing whether this be digital or for inhouse
printing, CD production, webpress or other sheetfed presses. Imposed files for digital printing using Quite Imposing Plus. Some
of the printing companies were RR Donnelley, Creel, C.O.P., Color West, Universal Imaging etc.Submitted files and got them
approved electronically via Kodak Prinergy, Kodak Insite, Agfas Apogee Portal and Dalim (depending on the printer).
In 2014 also typeset several magazines and around 300 pages of Arabic text for 13 arabic anti-drug campaign booklets.
(Function included last minute pre-press corrections in native indesign files in 15 languages as indicated by a
Quality Control In Charge and sometimes turn over of Color Proofs [in 2014 also ORIS certified Proofs].)
(2000 – 2007)TYPESETTER - TRANSLATIONS UNIT
Promotion department
In that time period typeset around 35,000 pages of promotional material. Used Quark Xpress as well as Indesign to typeset
items such as magazines, fliers, pamphlets, booklets, manuals, interactive CD-Roms, Exhibit displays etc. spanning a
language range of 50 languages. Set up methods to automate foreign artwork using pixel variables in Photoshop, language
layer comps and smart objects in photoshop. Writing applescripts as needed as well modifying javascripts to do the task.
Exotic languages dealt with were Arabic, Urdu, Tagalog. Mostly worked on 15 main languages such as Chinese, Japanese,
Hebrew, Greek, Russian, German, French, Italian, Spanish, English, Dutch, Danish, Swedish, Norwegian, Portuguese, etc.
In addition used applescript and command line tools to produce and personalize 60,000 booklet
covers - using 4 text positions and about 2500 different designs. This took about 3-4 weeks.
(1998– 2000)Promotion Assembly Line Director - TRANSLATIONS UNIT
Translations/Promotion department
Ran a 6 man inhouse translations team, 3 man typesetting team, as well as external freelance translators and
the typesetting of the translations up to turn over for printing. Produced magazines, fliers, posters, newsletters,
in house manuals as well as translated websites. During that time also set up a proper internal ethernet
network including running the cables, crimping the them etc. so as to speed up internal production.
(1996 – 1998)Typesetter - tRANSLATIONS UNIT
Book/Translations Department
In this time period was trained to typeset in Quark Xpres 3.2 (later 4), Quark Chinese & Japanese and
Quark Passport. During that time typeset books, packs and other materials in several languages. Also
used Pagemaker Middle Eastern for typesetting of about 1000 pages of Hebrew text.
2. Additional data on skills
Pgm’ing:
Using applescripting reduced 45 hour procedure of entering prices for 15 foreign language material
catalogs down to 1 hour for manual tagging (once) and 1 minute (per language) for price replacement.
(Similar proprietry software costs about $3000 and is not as customized). Doing this reduced production
time of 15 language catalogs majorly - 32 different currency versions were done in fraction of the
time - an action that used to take 45 hours (for 15 catalogs) became 1 hour and 15 min.
Ported several simple applescripts over to javascript so the Russian, LATAM and Italian Translations Departments which were
only using PCs could use the same tools.
Wrote applescripts that used a Bravo Robotics CD-burner to automatically tailor labels and burn tailored content onto CDs
unattended. Learned the needed data from the CD Burner Software Developper kit. The Burner was attached to a PC but
the applescript on the MAC submitted the needed jobs tickets for burning.
PDF page replacement scripts - wrote scripts that automatically language sorted and repalced specific pages in pdfs and
then gave a HTML report listing what exactly was found and done for inspection.
Set up a relational database in MYSQL to capture Jobs that I worked on and turned over when working in the Translations
Unit for tracking purposes.
CD-Roms:
Worked on PDF based CD-roms that would open a pdf and have interactive pdf features such
as navigation buttons and pdf forms and javascripts assigned to several buttons.
Improving tools:
Became a beta tester for Adobe Indesign, Acrobat in 2006 and Enfocus Pitstop Server etc. since
version 8 (now at 13). Also a beta tester for quite imposing Plus 3 and Commandpdf. Most input in beta
stage were ideas on improvements and then field testing them once functions were built in.
Some of the originated/contributed or feature requests that were implemented in Adobe products
are - external links for psds, background pdf’ing in indesign, data merge to pdf., dynamic layout
functionality, PDF form generation from indesign, Arabic and Hebrew language support in US
indesign, Document Fonts, ability to rent adobe software and feebdack on pricing for that.
Networking:
Networking - worked on upgrading the networking in an office with 30 staff to Cat6 cabling. Replacement of UPS
batteries to save costs. Implementing Load balancing on CENTOS 5 file server and adding additional Network
cards to increase bandwidth to about 110MB/s over gigabit - 6 bonded gigabit lanes going to our Cisco switches.
Thereby increasing the network speed greatly over apple file protocol and over the samba protocol.
Researched and gave recommendation for an ebook production line for a photographic
company at which point the first ebook was published for them.
Used fontforge to convert ttfs to open type face fonts or to add additional accented
characters to existing fonts so that they supported more than just English.
Otherwise worked on wireframes for a new iphone and android app - in developpment.
