Restaurants and Food
How to survive in England!
Types of Places you can go to.
Restaurant – A place you go to to have a meal, normally there is a little
quiet music and waiters come to your table to take your order. Some places
use a buffet style. This will be self service.
Coffee Shop. For example, Starbucks. A place where
you can have a coffee and a piece of cake. Maybe they
sell sandwiches but not full meals. Normally you order
and pay as you buy at the counter (mostrador)
Traditional English Pub. They normally open at 11am
and serve food all day. You can eat typical English food
like fish and chips, curry and on a Sunday they have
roast dinners. You can come here to just have a drink
and watch the football too. Last orders are at 11pm and
they close at 11:30pm.
Bar / Cocktail Bar. Here you can order a selection of
spirits, wine, beer or cocktails. Normally they open in the
afternoon and stay open until 2 or 3am. It is usually a
mature atmosphere with nice music in the background.
The prices are more expensive than pubs and there is
no food on the menu but maybe peanuts!
Nightclub or Disco. Here the people come to drink and
dance. There is very loud music and the drinks are
normally expensive. With big clubs it is normal to pay 10
pounds or more to get in. There is normally a live DJ and
they stay open until 6am.
Eating in the UK

Take Away Food
Anyone who has
been to the UK will
know that a lot of
people eat take away
food. Especially:
Chinese (Noodles)
Indian (Curry)
Italian (Pizza)
Fast Food
English and American
culture includes a lot
of fast food, like
Mcdonald’s,
Burger King or
Subway.
Also, after nights out
it is very common to
buy a kebab! But it is
not very healthy.
Fish and Chips!
Every tourist who
goes to the North of
England should try
the traditional Fish
and Chips. The most
normal way to eat it is
wrapped in
newspaper, sitting on
the beach! (hopefully
not in the rain!)
“Drive Thru”
It literally means a
form of ordering and
picking up food where
you “drive through”
the restaurant without
getting out of your
car. It is very typical in
the USA but in
England and in Spain
it is only Mcdonalds
that offer this service.
Microwave Meals
English can be lazy
cooks. There are a huge
variety of Microwave
meals on the market at
very economical prices
which allows families to
save time and money on
their cooking.
However, some people
say that it is very
unhealthy.
You heat up the whole
box and voilá a meal!
In a Restaurant
 In the UK, the idea of Tapas does not really
exist. When we go out it is more typical that we
choose from a large menu but we rarely share
our food. In some places it is even considered
rude to take food from someone elses plate!
 Enjoy your meal!
What would you like to start with?
A Starter in England is the first plate. It is usually
a bowl of soup, a prawn cocktail, paté or salad.
And for your main course?
The main course is a big plate of your choice. A
very traditional option would be Roast Beef with
vegetables, Yorkshire Pudding and Gravy.Yum!
And for dessert?
The English LOVE their puddings or desserts. There are a wide
range of hot and cold puddings and everyone has their favourite.
Because it is colder in The UK a lot of people have sponge puddings
with custard (a hot, egg, sugar and vanilla based sauce) We also
use a lot of berries and fruit in tarts and cold mousses.
Problems!
I don’t have any cutlery.
Could you bring me a
knife/fork/spoon?
Waiter, there is a fly in my soup!!
My food is cold.
I have been waiting a long time.
The bill is incorrect.
This is not what i ordered!
I don’t like it.
I want to complain.
Can I speak to the manager?
What will the waiter say to you?
Do you have a reservation?
Good evening, table for 2?
Would you like to know the specials?
Would you like to see the wine menu?
Are you ready to order?
I recommend…
How would you like your steak
cooked? (well done, medium, rare)
Is everything OK for you?
Bon Appetit! Enjoy your meal!
Would you like anything else?
Dessert? Coffee? Liqueur?
Thank you, come again soon!
Paying
Could I have the bill please?
Can I pay with a credit card?
Do you accept American Express?
Is service included?
Tips!
A tip is the money you leave for the waiter as an
extra, depending on the service. There is no
fixed rate in the UK. Some people leave nothing
and some people leave 10%. Up to you!
Drinks in the UK
England is famous for its selection
of beers. And no, they are not all
warm!
Guinness is the most famous dark
beer but there are also a large
selection of Ales that are between
a lager and a dark beer.
Many younger drinkers enjoy
Alcopops such as Smirnoff Ice
Whisky on the Rocks (with ice) is
a favourite with the Scottish.
Cider is very popular in Ireland
and The South East, some drink it
with blackcurrant juice
Spirit measures are smaller in the
UK which may explain why
English always get very drunk on
their holidays!
Warnings in Restaurants
It is now illegal to smoke in any public
establishment in the UK.
Dogs are not allowed in any restaurants for
health and safety reasons.
