Murshidabad
Introduction
Responsible Tourism is about “making better places for people to
live in and better places for people visit.” Responsible Tourism
requires that operators, hoteliers, governments, local people
and tourist take responsibility, take action to make tourism more
sustainable.
From the Tourism department of NSHM Knowledge Campus,
Kolkata, we took the initiative and we went to Murshidabad. The
main purpose behind it was, workshop on Responsible Tourism.
The motive of this workshop was to serve the function while
maintaining the safety of the passengers.
Details of the Workshop-
On 23rd July we reached Murshidabad by morning 11:00am. Our
accommodation was pre arranged by Nirmalya, who is a member of
Murshidabad Tourism Welfare Society. He arranged our accommodation
at hotel SAGNIK.
The entire workshop on ‘Responsible Tourism’ was organized by Masters
of Tourism and Travel Management Department of NSHM Knowledge
Campus, Kolkata.
We conducted the workshop in a hall inside the hotel with 16
Tangawala. We started at 11:30am and finished at 12:30pm.
Theme- Sustain N Serve
In a lot of cases, responsible tourism is a matter of respect for
the local traditions, cultures and the environment. It’s
important to be culturally sensitive in order to preserve the
well-being of the local communities and boost their economy.
Murshidabad is one of the best tourist centre in West Bengal.
Thousands of tourist visit Murshidabad every month and enjoy
Tanga ride (Horse cart). This is how Tangawalas earning money
from their profession. Our motive was to make themselves
aware about their health & hygiene so that then can stay safe
and let the tourist stay safe.
We delivered some important tips towards them regarding
their safety and profession-
We talked about cleanliness of Tanga gari
Always carry a medical kit box for their betterment as well
as tourists
Request them to carry a flare chart
If they wear clean attire during tanga ride because tourists
don’t want a ride with someone who is in a scruffy attire
At the end of the workshop we gave them a Certificate with a
medical kit box. Also arranged their lunch and request them to
convey this message to others Tanga wala.
Challenges of the Tangawalas-
 According to them only December to January is the peak season,
apart from that throughout the year they get very few tourists.
 They are not getting any extra facility from the Government.
 Day by day new vehicles are coming into the market, which is more
comfortable and convenient.
 After the covid foreign tourists are not coming, from which they
used to earn good amount of money.
 Decreasing tourists flow forcing them to go for masonry work so
that they can feed their horse.
 They don’t have any specific working hours.
Attraction we covered-
 Hazarduari Palace
 Kathgola Bagan Bari
 Katra Masjid
 Motijheel
 House of Jagat Seth
Hazarduari Palace- It is situated near the
bank of river Ganges. It was built in the
nineteenth century by architect Duncan
Macleod, under the reign of Nawab Nazim
Humayun Jah of Bengal, Bihar and Orissa(1824-
1838).
It is famous for beautiful artefacts, paintings,
weapons like Siraj-Ud-Daula’s swords, statues
and vintage cars that once belonged to the
Nawabs of the 18th century
Kathgola Bagan Bari- Kathgola Palace’ also
known as the Kathgola Bagan Bari, was the palace
cum garden of Raja Dhanpat Singh Dugar and
Lakshmipat Singh Dugar whose famous Adinath
Temple was built in 1873, by Harreck Chand.
Designed in the traditionally Jain style of
architecture, its intricately carved walls are worth
seeing and lend a unique beauty to the temple.
Katra Masjid- Built between 1723 and 1724, Katra
Masjid is one of the most popular mosques in east
India. The mosque was build as a centre of Islamic
learning by Murshid Quli Khan and also houses his
tomb. It is believed that Murad Farash Khan, an
architect and trusted follower of Murshid Quli Khan
was asked to construct this mosque.
Motijheel- Motijheel was the home of
Meherunnesa, history known her as Ghoseti
Begum, one of the masterminds of Siraj killing
conspiracy. A mosque and a palace were there,
though the palace has been destroyed but the
mosque is still there.
House of Jagat Seth-
The Jagat Seth family was a wealthy merchant,
banker and money lender family from
Murshidabad in Bengal during the time of the
Nawabs of Bengal. It contains personal possessions
of the Jagat Seth family including coins of the
bygone era, muslin and other extravagant clothes.
Conclusion-
The purpose of this workshop on Responsible Tourism with local Tangawalas was
educate them and make them aware about safety & hygiene, which we
successfully done. After the analysis we came to know about the challenges
they are facing. Tangagari is the culture and tradition of Murshidabad what they
are conveying. Government should come up with some helpful skim, which can
motivate them to convey this culture far.
We can say that Tourism is a very productive activity both for the tourist and
the government. As they support each other simultaneously. Also the
government should consider maintaining all the monuments and heritage site of
Murshidabad. So that more and more tourist visit this place.
