DefinitionThe goal of a research proposal is to present and justif.docxpetehbailey729071
Definition
The goal of a research proposal is to present and justify the need to study a research problem and to present the practical ways in which the proposed study should be conducted. The design elements and procedures for conducting the research are governed by standards within the predominant discipline in which the problem resides, so guidelines for research proposals are more exacting and less formal than a general project proposal. Research proposals contain extensive literature reviews. They must provide persuasive evidence that a need exists for the proposed study. In addition to providing a rationale, a proposal describes detailed methodology for conducting the research consistent with requirements of the professional or academic field and a statement on anticipated outcomes and/or benefits derived from the study's completion.
Krathwohl, David R.
How to Prepare a Dissertation Proposal: Suggestions for Students in Education and the Social and Behavioral Sciences
. Syracuse, NY: Syracuse University Press, 2005.
How to Approach Writing a Research Proposal
Your professor may assign the task of writing a research proposal for the following reasons:
Develop your skills in thinking about and designing a comprehensive research study;
Learn how to conduct a comprehensive review of the literature to ensure a research problem has not already been answered [or you may determine the problem has been answered ineffectively] and, in so doing, become better at locating scholarship related to your topic;
Improve your general research and writing skills;
Practice identifying the logical steps that must be taken to accomplish one's research goals;
Critically review, examine, and consider the use of different methods for gathering and analyzing data related to the research problem; and,
Nurture a sense of inquisitiveness within yourself and to help see yourself as an active participant in
the process of
doing scholarly research.
A proposal should contain all the key elements involved in designing a completed research study, with sufficient information that allows readers to assess the validity and usefulness of your proposed study. The only elements missing from a research proposal are the findings of the study and your analysis of those results. Finally, an effective proposal is judged on the quality of your writing and, therefore, it is important that your writing is coherent, clear, and compelling.
Regardless of the research problem you are investigating and the methodology you choose, all research proposals must address the following questions:
What do you plan to accomplish?
Be clear and succinct in defining the research problem and what it is you are proposing to research.
Why do you want to do it?
In addition to detailing your research design, you also must conduct a thorough review of the literature and provide convincing evidence that it is a topic worthy of study. Be sure to answer the "So What?" question.
How are you going to do it?

Epistemic Interaction - tuning interfaces to provide information for AI supportAlan Dix
Paper presented at SYNERGY workshop at AVI 2024, Genoa, Italy. 3rd June 2024
https://alandix.com/academic/papers/synergy2024-epistemic/
As machine learning integrates deeper into human-computer interactions, the concept of epistemic interaction emerges, aiming to refine these interactions to enhance system adaptability. This approach encourages minor, intentional adjustments in user behaviour to enrich the data available for system learning. This paper introduces epistemic interaction within the context of human-system communication, illustrating how deliberate interaction design can improve system understanding and adaptation. Through concrete examples, we demonstrate the potential of epistemic interaction to significantly advance human-computer interaction by leveraging intuitive human communication strategies to inform system design and functionality, offering a novel pathway for enriching user-system engagements.

Search and Society: Reimagining Information Access for Radical FuturesBhaskar Mitra
The field of Information retrieval (IR) is currently undergoing a transformative shift, at least partly due to the emerging applications of generative AI to information access. In this talk, we will deliberate on the sociotechnical implications of generative AI for information access. We will argue that there is both a critical necessity and an exciting opportunity for the IR community to re-center our research agendas on societal needs while dismantling the artificial separation between the work on fairness, accountability, transparency, and ethics in IR and the rest of IR research. Instead of adopting a reactionary strategy of trying to mitigate potential social harms from emerging technologies, the community should aim to proactively set the research agenda for the kinds of systems we should build inspired by diverse explicitly stated sociotechnical imaginaries. The sociotechnical imaginaries that underpin the design and development of information access technologies needs to be explicitly articulated, and we need to develop theories of change in context of these diverse perspectives. Our guiding future imaginaries must be informed by other academic fields, such as democratic theory and critical theory, and should be co-developed with social science scholars, legal scholars, civil rights and social justice activists, and artists, among others.

3. What is a Research Proposal?
A research proposal is an introduction that is mostly submitted to
the supervisor in order to explain the details of upcoming research
design. Picking up a good research proposal topic is important if you
really wish to conduct valuable research. Finding a
good proposal topic is not that hard but surely a tricky deal.
Remember, if you are engaged in higher education then sooner or
later you will be asked to submit proposal paper topic for
your academic research. Here are some research proposal ideas
and topics that will definitely direct you. So, have a look and go
ahead.
4. Tips & Guidelines for Writing Research
Proposal
If you are going through an academic research then you will
find most of your time spending on a research paper. So it
is better choice to select a proposal topic that you really
like and enjoy. Although it is not that simple but to make
your academic research a success, you should select a
strong and enjoyable topic. You can also consult our
article How to Write a Research Proposal? for more help
on drafting research proposals.
5. Tips & Guidelines for Writing Research
Proposal (Cont.)
While talking about research proposal topics and ideas, it is
important to note that the topic you are planning to select
for your research proposal should be relevant to the
course you are going through. Moreover, you must have
an idea how the specific topic you have selected will
produce an effect for policy change or any further
discovery. This will give strength to your research project.
Next step lies in writing a solid thesis statement.
6. Some Restrictions
It is important to understand that research proposals are not
very easy to develop. These require ample amount of time.
You may find a research proposal topic that you feel better
for your academic research but at the same time you find
few books and little knowledge available on the subject.
This may waste a lot of time and cause state of frustration.
Sometimes the topic you choose for your proposal does
not support the study. You may have lots of exciting ideas
in your mind but it is not essential that all these also
7. Some Restrictions (Cont.)
Many professors face the same issue especially those who
publish extensively. So, be confident and do not lose heart.
You can go with several other available topics.
Furthermore, it is wise to select three or four research
paper topics in the beginning that interest you. Go to
preliminary search through library or your computer.
Finally, select a topic that is supported with lot of published
material.
8. Format of a Good Research Proposal
There are several formats available as far as sample writing
research proposal is related. A researcher can select any
format based on the requirement of his study. A brief
description of the three widely adopted formats for
research proposal topics are described in Next Slides.
9. Question
Those research proposals dealing with academics are most
often written in this format. This format involves an idea
that contains a research question. For example “Does
social behavior affect the frequency of military intervention
in developing countries?” After creating question,
research proposal outline is developed involving the
sources that will help to answer this question.
10. Experiment
In this format of research proposal, special procedures are
figure out that can help carrying out an experiment to
analyze a hypothesis statement. For example “What
happens to the demand of gold and the demand of meat if
their prices rise?”
11. In-depth Research
This format involves wider study and techniques to explore a
topic in a broader context. Whether you choose Henrik
Ibsen’s Literary Achievements, Islamic Architecture or The
History of Brooklyn, you must go with detailed study of the
topic. In this research proposal format, researcher plans in
the proposal statement what he is planning to study and
what he will do with the outcomes.
12. Research Proposal Topics: A Short
Guideline
As already mentioned, research proposals are developed to make a
clear outlook of one’s intentions towards a research project.
Constituents of a good research proposal include aims of the
particular study, method that will be applied, clear hypothesis and
an outline of estimated outcomes. So, quality topics should be
focused to achieve expected results.
For example if you are planning to go
with psychology research proposal topics then you may work out
depression, aging, child abuse and adult attitude towards
coping strategies. As these topics are current day trend and
relevant to most of the societies all over the world. So, lot of
information is available both on and offline.
13. Research Proposal Topics: A Short Guideline
(Cont.)
