The Group of people that will be described in my paper is the Navajos of the Navajo Nation,
located in the northeastern part of Arizona, and their religious beliefs. Another topic that will be
discussed is the ceremonies that are held among the Navajo tribe. The reason this topic interest
me is due to my wife and hearing stories about ways she was taught as a child. Also how much of
an impact it has had in her life due to family members taking part in these ceremonies. According
to the history of the Navajo Tribe, the Holy People lived in the underworld and helped by guiding
the First Man and First Woman to earth (McCoy 1988). The Holy People are said to be attracted to
songs, dances, and chants during the ceremony along with the creation of Sandpainting. The

the unknown during WWII. In this paper, what elements in a Nazi forced labor camp impacted
the prisoners, how is survival addressed, and can there be any free will under these totalitarian
regimes? By looking at the works of two survivors from the Nazi death camps and the Stalinist
Gulag, I will provide a critical response to each of these questions.
Everyday life in the Nazi camps was made as miserable as possible. One way that this was achieved
was the stripping of any humanity. Prisoners were reduced down to nothing but a number. A
definite numbers of prisoners had to go with each transport. It did not really matter which, since
each of them was nothing but a number . This essentially stripped them of their humanity.
There are 3 phases to prison camp life. These were admission, camp life, and liberation. The first
phase is when a prisoner gets admitted to a labor or death camp and it is characterized by initial

Numerous prison sentences last several years; even taking decades of a person s life, for
countless people prison is the only life they are familiar with. The U.S. prison system is necessary;
however, the current question is whether it is effective. The prison system should be reformed so
that the prisons are not overcrowded and that prisoners have an improved quality of life in and out

while they are locked up and currently there are around 2 million criminals not committing crimes
(Prisoners), nevertheless once those prisoners are released they return to a life of crime. Statistics
show, two thirds of prisoners will reoffend (Criminal Justice). One of the main roles of prison is to
rehabilitate prisoners so that they will not commit other crimes; however, it obviously is not
working. To alleviate this problem, prisons should counsel prisoners and educate them on why
