June 3, 2024 Anti-Semitism Letter Sent to MIT President Kornbluth and MIT Cor...Levi Shapiro
Letter from the Congress of the United States regarding Anti-Semitism sent June 3rd to MIT President Sally Kornbluth, MIT Corp Chair, Mark Gorenberg
Dear Dr. Kornbluth and Mr. Gorenberg,
The US House of Representatives is deeply concerned by ongoing and pervasive acts of antisemitic
harassment and intimidation at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT). Failing to act decisively to ensure a safe learning environment for all students would be a grave dereliction of your responsibilities as President of MIT and Chair of the MIT Corporation.
This Congress will not stand idly by and allow an environment hostile to Jewish students to persist. The House believes that your institution is in violation of Title VI of the Civil Rights Act, and the inability or
unwillingness to rectify this violation through action requires accountability.
Postsecondary education is a unique opportunity for students to learn and have their ideas and beliefs challenged. However, universities receiving hundreds of millions of federal funds annually have denied
students that opportunity and have been hijacked to become venues for the promotion of terrorism, antisemitic harassment and intimidation, unlawful encampments, and in some cases, assaults and riots.
The House of Representatives will not countenance the use of federal funds to indoctrinate students into hateful, antisemitic, anti-American supporters of terrorism. Investigations into campus antisemitism by the Committee on Education and the Workforce and the Committee on Ways and Means have been expanded into a Congress-wide probe across all relevant jurisdictions to address this national crisis. The undersigned Committees will conduct oversight into the use of federal funds at MIT and its learning environment under authorities granted to each Committee.
• The Committee on Education and the Workforce has been investigating your institution since December 7, 2023. The Committee has broad jurisdiction over postsecondary education, including its compliance with Title VI of the Civil Rights Act, campus safety concerns over disruptions to the learning environment, and the awarding of federal student aid under the Higher Education Act.
• The Committee on Oversight and Accountability is investigating the sources of funding and other support flowing to groups espousing pro-Hamas propaganda and engaged in antisemitic harassment and intimidation of students. The Committee on Oversight and Accountability is the principal oversight committee of the US House of Representatives and has broad authority to investigate “any matter” at “any time” under House Rule X.
• The Committee on Ways and Means has been investigating several universities since November 15, 2023, when the Committee held a hearing entitled From Ivory Towers to Dark Corners: Investigating the Nexus Between Antisemitism, Tax-Exempt Universities, and Terror Financing. The Committee followed the hearing with letters to those institutions on January 10, 202
A Strategic Approach: GenAI in EducationPeter Windle
Artificial Intelligence (AI) technologies such as Generative AI, Image Generators and Large Language Models have had a dramatic impact on teaching, learning and assessment over the past 18 months. The most immediate threat AI posed was to Academic Integrity with Higher Education Institutes (HEIs) focusing their efforts on combating the use of GenAI in assessment. Guidelines were developed for staff and students, policies put in place too. Innovative educators have forged paths in the use of Generative AI for teaching, learning and assessments leading to pockets of transformation springing up across HEIs, often with little or no top-down guidance, support or direction.
This Gasta posits a strategic approach to integrating AI into HEIs to prepare staff, students and the curriculum for an evolving world and workplace. We will highlight the advantages of working with these technologies beyond the realm of teaching, learning and assessment by considering prompt engineering skills, industry impact, curriculum changes, and the need for staff upskilling. In contrast, not engaging strategically with Generative AI poses risks, including falling behind peers, missed opportunities and failing to ensure our graduates remain employable. The rapid evolution of AI technologies necessitates a proactive and strategic approach if we are to remain relevant.

The French Revolution, which began in 1789, was a period of radical social and political upheaval in France. It marked the decline of absolute monarchies, the rise of secular and democratic republics, and the eventual rise of Napoleon Bonaparte. This revolutionary period is crucial in understanding the transition from feudalism to modernity in Europe.

literature is known as genre.

4. Rock music is a genre of popular music that
originated as "rock and roll" in the United
States in the 1950s, and developed into a
range of different styles in the 1960s and
later. Rock music mostly involves electric
guitars, electric bass and drums, like other
genres as well. But, modern rock involves
distorted guitars, effected bass, drums with
steel snare and a wide range of equipments
is used in the modern rock.
5. Rock is further on divided into types.
Some of the types of rock are given below
:
Alternative Rock
Soft Rock
Hard Rock
Progressive Rock
Punk Rock
6. I have analyzed five different music videos
which belongs to five different bands. I
have mentioned all of the features of the
videos which are immaculate for being
used in a music video. I have analyzed the
videos of the following five bands: Dream
Theater, Nickelback, Entity Paradigm,
Avenged Sevenfold and Pantera.
7. The Looking Glass – Dream
Theater (Example # 1)
I am inspired by the video of “The Looking Glass” – “Dream Theater”
as it uses dark lighting, variety of camera shots and angles, which I
may use in my self-produced music track’s video for the portfolio, but
not confirmed. Some of the screenshots of Dream Theater song’s
video are shown, in next slides.
8.
9. Guitar Close-Up is used here because a guitar riff has been played at this
particular shot.
10. Birds Eye Shot is used here to show Mike Mangini’s giant drum kit.
11. Over the shoulder shot is used here to show that both of the guitarists are
playing at the same time.
12. The band have used their own jam room for the shoot
of this video and I will also use this idea in my video.
13. Very light make up has been applied on Dream
Theater in this video. They have kept it totally natural
and I think that I should also keep it this way.
14. All of the band members have long hair in the video, as mostly
rock musicians or metal musicians have long hair because it
gives a heavy and a dark impact on the audience. I guess this
thing automatically shows the representation of the genre.
16. Dream Theater’s website theme is dark blue which is very
much representing their genre. The home page is represented
by the Dream Theater’s logo. It also contains the following
features:

17. Well, the set used in this video is quite simple, but
the camera shots, angles and lighting used in this
video are very reasonable and attractive for the
audience. Lights used in this video are white, which
creates an epic, dull and aggressive appearance.
The thing I like the most about the video is
directions. I am planning to use such directions in
my music video.
18. The location used in this video is a house, and the
video has shot in a jam room as shown in the next
slide.
20. A high angle shot has been used in the video to show the drum kit and the
other equipment in the room. It also focuses the drummer and the guitarist
of the band.
21. A low angle shot is used to focus on Chad Karoeger while playing the
guitar riff.
22. Another high angle shot it used to show the entire jam room below the
stairs. I saw this shot for the very first time in a rock video and if I will get
a chance to take a high angle shot in my music video, I will use such type
of a shot.
23. Hairstyles
Members of Nickelback also have short hair like Entity Paradigm (Shown
in the next example). Maybe, the trend of long hair is changing day by day
in rock bands or the modern rock bands.
24. The Make-Up
The Make-up used in this video is of such a type which looks good in white
lighting as it has kept so natural, like the previous example of The Looking
Glass – Dream Theater.
26. Nickelback’s website theme is black, grey and white which
represents a dark/aggressive feeling. If you compare it with
the other examples, their website has comparatively less
features, that are:
Merch Store
Fan Club
Mailing List SignUp
News on the home page
27. Entity Paradigm is a Pakistani General Rock band. The
video of Ajab Tamasha is one of my favorite video ever
made. The yellow and warm lighting and the
pyrotechnics made this video look so good. They gave
it a lively and a rocking feeling. It has a perfect video
opening as shown in next slide and I may use such
type of opening for my music video.
29. The pyrotechnics used in the video enhanced the level of
the video. It gave a lively feeling. This concept is used very
rarely in the videos as pyrotechnics are costly and they does
not fix/suits in every Rock music video.
30. Water splashes were stroked on the drums to create a different and
an attractive appearance. I have never seen such type of concept in
any video so far.
31. The Make-Up
Blush on and eye make-up are used in the video to create a dull feeling
because most of the rock/metal bands uses such type of make up to express
a dark feeling. If you compare it with the other examples, no one has applied
such type of make-up, so this example is comparatively unique from the other
videos.
32. Hairstyles and The
Location
All of the band members have short hair unlike most of the rock bands.
The location used in the video is a big hall.
33. Entity Paradigm does not have a website but a
Wikipedia's article.
URL:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Entity_Paradigm
34. The video of Nightmare by the famous band Avenged
Sevenfold is quite different from the other examples.
The video contains the performance as well as the
narrative acts. The narrative depicts lead vocalist M.
Shadows about to undergo surgery, when the
surgeons take him out of the room on a gurney. So this
idea is comparatively different from the other videos
and makes it unique.
35. A screenshot from the video is shown below of the narrative. The
location used in this part of the video is a hospital. Whereas, the
performance part of the video has shot in a studio’s small room, as
shown in the next slide.
37. The Make-Up
The make-up used by the band members is very different, one of the
example of a band member is shown below. He have used a make-up
base on his face and the blood on his forehead to show an evil
appearance.
38. A guitar close up has taken while the guitarist is playing the solo, just to
make the video more conceptual and natural.
39. Hairstyles
Wild hairstyles like spikes are used by the band, unlike the other
bands, one of the band member’s hairstyle is shown below.
40. The lighting used in this scene is a normal light of a room along with some
supporting lighting.
42. Avenged Sevenfold’s website theme is also blue and black
like Dream Theater, this shows that most of the rock bands
uses dark color schemes. It is more of a forum based
website, unlike the other examples.
43. So it is an another example of a music video which
contains narrative as well as the performance shots in
the video. A graveyard is shown in the narrative and
the whole concept of the song is shown in the
narrative. The locations used in the video are a
graveyard and a live concert. The screenshots are
shown in the next two slides of the narrative and the
concert shot after it.
46. A shot from the performance part of the video.
47. The band members have long hair, as long hair also represents the
rock/metal music.
48. The Make-Up
So this is going to be my first example in which no make-ups are used by
the band members as they have merged a live concert video in their music
video.
49. A transition between the narrative and performance part of the video is
shown below. None of the other examples contains such type of transition
used in this music video.
51. Pantera’s website color scheme is orange, grey and white.
Their website is very much like Dream Theater if we talk about
the features, as listed below:

52. If we talk about sound, Dream Theater uses a variety
of musical instruments, including Guitars, 6-Strings
Bass Guitar, Pearl Drum Kit, Keyboards, Steel Guitar,
Fingerboard etc. Every music has a different feel. Soft
songs gives you an emotional feel and hard songs
gives you a crazy feel. If we talk about Dream
Theater’s wither, it gives you a deep, emotional feel. If
you talk about Dream Theater’s Enigma Machine, it
gives you a hard, aggressive and a crazy feeling but if
you talk about my own song, which I have produced for
the portfolio, it gives you both types of the feeling,
emotional in chorus and aggressive in verses and riff.
53. Logo is a graphic mark or design which represents a
firm, band, etc.
A font is a specific typeface of a certain size and style.
Logo and fonts of a band depends on the genre of
course, as all of the logos and the fonts cannot be
used in every type of music. Rock bands uses a Gothic
or simple type of font and logo, pop bands use fancy
type of font and logo. It all depends on the music a
band produces. I will use Gothic fonts and simple logos
for my project.
54. The distinct shape of alphabets (especially that of “O”) in the
Maiden logo superbly depicts the heavy metal imagery the band
is closely associated with. The Iron Maiden logo has probably
sold bigger amounts of T-shirt and merchandise sales than most
of the other metal bands. The font used is Metal Lord and indeed
gives the Iron Maiden logo a slick metallic touch and finish. The
grey and red colors in the font signify passion, strength and
refinement.
The distinctive features of the maiden logo indeed classify it
among the best rock band logos of all time.
Creed have used a font named as Mason,
which represents the band perfectly.
Creed literally means Faith and with
respect to the meaning of the band’s
name, they have used a modern simple
type of font.
