Rent an Apartment or House? Do You Have Renters
Insurance?
Congratulations on finding the
perfect apartment. It is without a
doubt you are excited and ready to
move in. Before you jump and
sign that lease, do a complete
walkthrough to be sure everything
is in proper working order.
Meixell-Diehl Insurance wants to
be your renter's insurance partner,
and by doing so, we want to be
sure your decision is sound. Here
are the things you will need to
check as you start reviewing the
apartment.
Be ready
Have your phone out and camera on so you can take pictures of any problem
areas. Make notes as well. Bring a measuring tape to check distances on
door widths – you need to be sure your furniture will fit.
That out of the way, here is your general checklist of items to be aware of when
you are doing your walkthrough.
1. Rodent infestation – Look for droppings and chew marks. Pay close
attention to the baseboards and edges.
2. Bring a cell phone charger – Check each and every outlet in each room.
3. Phone jacks and cable outlets should be working in each room.
Safety checks
1. Smoke and carbon monoxide detectors should be working and in the correct
areas. Fire extinguishers are in place and within proper codes.
2. Know there is a fire escape plan in place and where to go.

Doors and windows
1. All windows and doors should open and close correctly.
2. All locks, doorknobs and other locks are in place and lockable. All external
locks should have their own keys.
3. Window coverings are intact plus screens.
Bathrooms
1. Flush all toilets and check the interior parts.
2. Run each faucet and look under the sink for leaks.
3. Shower heads should not spray all over the place.
4. Test hot water to be sure it heats quickly and well.
Kitchen
1. Turn on all appliances including stove burners.
2. Open oven and check over.
3. Check fridge.
4. Look at the linoleum and countertops for chips, stains and scuffs. Make
notes or take pictures.
5. Open and close cupboards and drawers.
Living areas
1. Check each light switch.
2. Test A/C and heat. Listen for strange noises.
3. Open and close blinds.
