It has been argued that Religion has always been
historically connected to sexism and gender inequality,
and yet it is women who in most cases exhibit higher
levels of religiosity than men do.
Why would this be the case?
The answers provided to this question will make us cover
a few topics: 1. Feminization of Religion 2. Risk Tolerance
3. Sexism. 4. Religion and Sexuality.
1. GENDER AND RELIGIOUS INVOLVEMENT: WOMEN

2. FEMINIZATION OF RELIGION
 “Womanhood was believed to be a higher, nobler state than manhood, since it was less
directly related to the body and was more involved with the spirit; women had less to
transcend in their progress” (Welter 1976:95).
 Religion also came to be viewed as less rational (Ruether 1975).
 As religion was feminized, the leaders of the church were also attributed with feminine
virtues and vices (Ruether 1975).
 Rationality was associated with science, technology, and industry—all of which were
male-dominated spheres.
 Women came to be viewed as more religious than men and as the transmitters of
morality but still not as highly rational.
 Gender orientation in one’s values is a better predictor of religiousness than is the sex of the
person (Thompson 1991).
 Religion continues to have feminine overtones, despite the fact that it has often been less
than sympathetic to women.

SOME THEORIES:
A. Religion and Risk Tolerance
ď‚· Sociologists Alan Miller and John Hoffman developed a
rational choice explanation on religion and risk aversion.
ď‚· In rational choice people make decisions by minimizing their
costs and maximizing their benefits.
ď‚· To engage in religious practices, one of the potential benefits
of being religious is the possibility of a better next life,
and one of the potential costs of irreligion is the possibility of
eternal damnation.
ď‚· From this perspective, irreligion is risky behavior and women
have a lower tolerance for risk than men
B.Socialization, Gender Difference in Religiosity & Power Control theory
(PCT). .
ď‚· PCT explains gender differences in propensity to engage in risky behavior.
ď‚· Jessica Collett & Omar Lizardo applied PCT to the gender difference in religiosity
and found gender differences in religiosity between patriarchal households and
gender-egalitarian households.
ď‚· Jessica Collett & Omar Lizardo say that women raised in more egalitarian
households tend to be less religious than women raised in more patriarchal
house-holds (Collett and Lizardo 2009).
ď‚· Socialization of women into risk tolerance or aversion affects their subsequent
levels of religiosity.
QUESTION TO THINK ABOUT...
Do religious behaviors by women seem to you to be more about
female risk aversion (fear of consequences), or does socialization
seem to be the better explanation for gender differences? Why?
Which explanation best takes into account the fact that male
involvement is higher than that of females among Jews, Buddhists,
Muslims, and Hindu?
3.RELIGION AND SEXISM...(INEQUALITY IN RELIGION)
 JUDAISM
 There are also ancient stories about women, such as Ruth, Esther, and various women in the Book of Judges, that depict
women as strong and courageous.
 Overall effect of the Hebrew Bible is that women are subordinate.
 The primary symbolic act that represents the covenant with God is circumcision. It shows that only men could be ritually
inducted into the covenanted community of God’s people.
 Religious historian Rosemary Ruether has problems with hierarchical dualism, (this world/other world, darkness/light,
carnality/spirituality, emotion/reason) (Ruether 1975).
 Reuther maintained that this sort of dualism is universally associated with sexist thinking (Shields 1986).
 Women are invariably associated with the “lower” processes and with worldliness. Women are viewed as the cause of
passion and are believed to be preoccupied with it.
 For Ruether the world is defined as evil and the spiritual world is viewed as good—that has an inherent sexist bias.
CASE STUDY: JESUS AND WOMEN
 The New Testament Gospels depict a much more positive view of women
1974; Ruether 1975).
 Jesus himself violated many of the gender role taboos of his day.

 He allowed women to join his traveling group (Luke 8:1–3) and encouraged them to
sit at his feet and learn (traveling and studying with a rabbi were viewed as
very improper for women in that day).
ORDINATION OF WOMEN AS PRIESTS IN RELIGION
 Many religious groups have refuse to ordain women—barring them from the major leadership
positions. Researchers argue that women have often been singled out and accused of sexual weakness,
sinfulness, and impurity in the new religious movements (Jacobs 1987).
 Yet Pagan religious traditions, such as Wicca, have a much more positive attitude toward the feminine,
with female gods and leadership positions for women.
Philippe Couillard, the premier of Quebec, said: 'We are in a free and democratic society. You speak to me, I should see your face, and you should see mine. It’s as simple as that.'

CASE STUDY: ISLAM THE HIJAB ISSUE
In a society that values clothing as a form of personal expression and
individuality—indeed, even as a right—the veil is profoundly countercultural.
Because only women are required to veil in Islam, it is seen by some
observers to be an oppressive means of controlling Muslim women.

 The hijab has also been manipulated as a tool of power and control (Hamzeh,
2015).
 Janson (2011) asserts that debates over the hijab are more about ideological and
political supremacy, the fear of Western secularism, or the construction of an
imminent Islamic threat to Western culture, than about clothing.

RETURN TO ANCIENT GENDER ROLES
In the book, Tradition in a Rootless World: Women Turn to Orthodox Judaism, it is said
that Orthodox Judaism is attractive to women who feel a lack of fulfillment in the
contemporary world and seek to become grounded in an ancient tradition.
Part of that grounding is in the clarity of the gender roles Orthodox Judaism provides, but
that combines with the rootedness of those roles in long-established religious traditions
and family life.
This contrasts with the gender role confusion in con-temporary secular society and the
emptiness of working life in the modern corporate world
4.RELIGION AND SEXUALITY
 The acceptance of homosexuality along with considerable polarization in
attitudes is a big problem in the world.
 Muslims believe that homosexual behavior is morally wrong: 99% of Muslims
in Thailand and Cameroon, 98% in Ethiopia, 97% in Ghana and Lebanon, and
96% in Jordan and Kenya (Pew Research Center Forum on Religion and
Public Life 2013).
 Catholic countries in Western Europe accept homosexuality. Only 19% of
Italians, 14% of French, and 6% of Spaniards say it is morally unacceptable.
 More secularized societies whose dominant religious heritage is Protestant are
most receptive to homosexuality and to same-sex marriage.
 This is evident in the legality of same-sex marriage in the heavily secular and
historically Lutheran Scandinavian nations of Denmark, Norway, and Sweden,
as well as their Nordic neighbor Iceland.
SOME CHALLENGES
We have much less empirical research
available on the connection between religion
and gender attitudes of individual members
than we have on religion and racial
attitudes.
How gender and sexuality relate to religion
and religiosity is a question sociologists
continue to investigate.
QUESTION TO THINK ABOUT
Do the faith traditions with which you are familiar
have more feminine than masculine values—
stressing cooperation, support, nurturance, and
relationships as central, rather than competition
and individualistic achievement? If so, does this
explain why fewer men affiliate and attend
services?

  • 2. It has been argued that Religion has always been historically connected to sexism and gender inequality, and yet it is women who in most cases exhibit higher levels of religiosity than men do. Why would this be the case? The answers provided to this question will make us cover a few topics: 1. Feminization of Religion 2. Risk Tolerance 3. Sexism. 4. Religion and Sexuality.
  • 3. 1. GENDER AND RELIGIOUS INVOLVEMENT: WOMEN

FEMINIZATION OF RELIGION  “Womanhood was believed to be a higher, nobler state than manhood, since it was less directly related to the body and was more involved with the spirit; women had less to transcend in their progress” (Welter 1976:95).  Religion also came to be viewed as less rational (Ruether 1975).  As religion was feminized, the leaders of the church were also attributed with feminine virtues and vices (Ruether 1975).
  • 6.  Rationality was associated with science, technology, and industry—all of which were male-dominated spheres.  Women came to be viewed as more religious than men and as the transmitters of morality but still not as highly rational.  Gender orientation in one’s values is a better predictor of religiousness than is the sex of the person (Thompson 1991).  Religion continues to have feminine overtones, despite the fact that it has often been less than sympathetic to women. .
  • 7. SOME THEORIES: A. Religion and Risk Tolerance ď‚· Sociologists Alan Miller and John Hoffman developed a rational choice explanation on religion and risk aversion. ď‚· In rational choice people make decisions by minimizing their costs and maximizing their benefits. ď‚· To engage in religious practices, one of the potential benefits of being religious is the possibility of a better next life, and one of the potential costs of irreligion is the possibility of eternal damnation. ď‚· From this perspective, irreligion is risky behavior and women have a lower tolerance for risk than men

B.Socialization, Gender Difference in Religiosity & Power Control theory (PCT). . ď‚· PCT explains gender differences in propensity to engage in risky behavior. ď‚· Jessica Collett & Omar Lizardo applied PCT to the gender difference in religiosity and found gender differences in religiosity between patriarchal households and gender-egalitarian households. ď‚· Jessica Collett & Omar Lizardo say that women raised in more egalitarian households tend to be less religious than women raised in more patriarchal house-holds (Collett and Lizardo 2009). ď‚· Socialization of women into risk tolerance or aversion affects their subsequent levels of religiosity.
  • 9. QUESTION TO THINK ABOUT... Do religious behaviors by women seem to you to be more about female risk aversion (fear of consequences), or does socialization seem to be the better explanation for gender differences? Why? Which explanation best takes into account the fact that male involvement is higher than that of females among Jews, Buddhists, Muslims, and Hindu?
  • 10. 3.RELIGION AND SEXISM...(INEQUALITY IN RELIGION)  JUDAISM  There are also ancient stories about women, such as Ruth, Esther, and various women in the Book of Judges, that depict women as strong and courageous.  Overall effect of the Hebrew Bible is that women are subordinate.  The primary symbolic act that represents the covenant with God is circumcision. It shows that only men could be ritually inducted into the covenanted community of God’s people.  Religious historian Rosemary Ruether has problems with hierarchical dualism, (this world/other world, darkness/light, carnality/spirituality, emotion/reason) (Ruether 1975).  Reuther maintained that this sort of dualism is universally associated with sexist thinking (Shields 1986).  Women are invariably associated with the “lower” processes and with worldliness. Women are viewed as the cause of passion and are believed to be preoccupied with it.  For Ruether the world is defined as evil and the spiritual world is viewed as good—that has an inherent sexist bias.
  • 11. CASE STUDY: JESUS AND WOMEN  The New Testament Gospels depict a much more positive view of women 1974; Ruether 1975).  Jesus himself violated many of the gender role taboos of his day. (Parvey  He allowed women to join his traveling group (Luke 8:1–3) and encouraged them to sit at his feet and learn (traveling and studying with a rabbi were viewed as very improper for women in that day).
  • 12. ORDINATION OF WOMEN AS PRIESTS IN RELIGION  Many religious groups have refuse to ordain women—barring them from the major leadership positions. Researchers argue that women have often been singled out and accused of sexual weakness, sinfulness, and impurity in the new religious movements (Jacobs 1987).  Yet Pagan religious traditions, such as Wicca, have a much more positive attitude toward the feminine, with female gods and leadership positions for women.

  • 14. CASE STUDY: ISLAM THE HIJAB ISSUE In a society that values clothing as a form of personal expression and individuality—indeed, even as a right—the veil is profoundly countercultural. Because only women are required to veil in Islam, it is seen by some observers to be an oppressive means of controlling Muslim women. Women campaign Against Stereotypes in the Netherlands Link: https://www.opensocietyfoundations.org/voices/so-you-think-you-know-muslim-women-campaigning-against-stereotypes- netherlands  The hijab has also been manipulated as a tool of power and control (Hamzeh, 2015).  Janson (2011) asserts that debates over the hijab are more about ideological and political supremacy, the fear of Western secularism, or the construction of an imminent Islamic threat to Western culture, than about clothing.  (Read the article “Decolonizing the hijab: An interpretive exploration by two Muslim psychotherapists” by Noorjehan Joosub and Sumayya Ebrahim (2020).

RETURN TO ANCIENT GENDER ROLES In the book, Tradition in a Rootless World: Women Turn to Orthodox Judaism, it is said that Orthodox Judaism is attractive to women who feel a lack of fulfillment in the contemporary world and seek to become grounded in an ancient tradition. Part of that grounding is in the clarity of the gender roles Orthodox Judaism provides, but that combines with the rootedness of those roles in long-established religious traditions and family life. This contrasts with the gender role confusion in con-temporary secular society and the emptiness of working life in the modern corporate world
  • 17. 4.RELIGION AND SEXUALITY  The acceptance of homosexuality along with considerable polarization in attitudes is a big problem in the world.  Muslims believe that homosexual behavior is morally wrong: 99% of Muslims in Thailand and Cameroon, 98% in Ethiopia, 97% in Ghana and Lebanon, and 96% in Jordan and Kenya (Pew Research Center Forum on Religion and Public Life 2013).  Catholic countries in Western Europe accept homosexuality. Only 19% of Italians, 14% of French, and 6% of Spaniards say it is morally unacceptable.  More secularized societies whose dominant religious heritage is Protestant are
  • 18. most receptive to homosexuality and to same-sex marriage.  This is evident in the legality of same-sex marriage in the heavily secular and historically Lutheran Scandinavian nations of Denmark, Norway, and Sweden, as well as their Nordic neighbor Iceland.
  • 19. SOME CHALLENGES We have much less empirical research available on the connection between religion and gender attitudes of individual members than we have on religion and racial attitudes. How gender and sexuality relate to religion and religiosity is a question sociologists continue to investigate.
  • 20. QUESTION TO THINK ABOUT Do the faith traditions with which you are familiar have more feminine than masculine values— stressing cooperation, support, nurturance, and relationships as central, rather than competition and individualistic achievement? If so, does this explain why fewer men affiliate and attend services?
