The air moving down the leeward slope of mountains creates a rain shadow effect where precipitation is reduced. As clouds rise above the dew point on the windward side of mountains, condensation occurs leading to precipitation. Cumulus clouds form and the sun evaporates water in the hydrologic cycle.
