Relational Frame Theory (RFT)

Editor's Notes

  • #5Ā Let’s try something – next slide
  • #6Ā How are men like dogs? How are dogs better than men? How are men the parents of dogs? This demonstrates that relational responding is arbitrary, i.e., everything is relatable to everything else (according to language). But that just doesn’t seem like it should be true – right? How can it be logical that everything can be the parent of everything else? Our minds can justify/rationalize a particular ā€œrelation.ā€ [different frames] ---------
  • #7Ā How are men like dogs? How are dogs better than me? How are men the parents of dogs? This demonstrates that relational responding is arbitrary, i.e., everything is relatable to everything else (according to language). But that just doesn’t seem like it should be true – right? How can it be logical that everything can be the parent of everything else? Our minds can justify/rationalize a particular ā€œrelation.ā€ [different frames]
  • #8Ā Human babies at 15 months (give or take) can reverse the direction (derive) 24 months they can derive 4 from just 2 taught Therefore 2 Taught +4 Derived -------------- = 6 Total
  • #9Ā What separates humans from other animals? Lots of them probably communicate – growl – not sure what that means Which have language? Science can’t prove a negative, i.e., we can’t say something doesn’t exist. For example, I can say I have never seen Santa Clause with a white beard, but that doesn’t mean he doesn’t exist. He could be somewhere I haven’t looked yet. Extra Credit (Pass Fail class) Find and post data on any of the following: Language Opposable thumbs Tool use Intra species killing Suffering???
  • #10Ā What’s the percentage of people with a dx in any given year? Show them depression. How many people seriously consider suicide (percentage)? How many attempt?
  • #12Ā Global Warming Is it real? Are you afraid of it? What are you doing about it? How afraid do you need to be in order to do something about it? How do you know it is real? A Depressive Episode Is it real? Are you afraid of one? What are you doing about it? How afraid do you need to be in order to do something about it? How do you know it is real? A Black Hole Is it real? Are you afraid of one swallowing the earth? What are you doing about it? How afraid do you need to be in order to do something about it? How do you know it is real? How many scientists have seen one? A Serious Relationship Is it real? Are you afraid of one? What are you doing about it? How afraid do you need to be in order to do something about it? How do you know it is real? Endless….. We can imagine infinite number of things to fear or attract us, evaluate them, ruminate, struggle with the ideas of them, even if we’ve never seen one. So what do we do when one pops into our head?
