2. The Reiman Foundation, co-founded by Denver investor Scott
Reiman, contributed to fund the building of a new recreation center in
Netawaka, Kansas, located some 40 miles north of Topeka in
Jackson County. Built on what was formerly a vacant lot edged with
barbed wire, the 30,000-square-foot recreation center will provide
community residents with access to a basketball court, gymnasium,
walking track, and weight room, as well as a pool. The Reiman
Foundation's generous donation also went toward a physical therapy
office at the facility, which was completed in 2013.
3. Netawaka locals hope the new recreation center will help to
revitalize the city, whose population has decreased sharply
over the last 10 years. At present, its population numbers just
over 140. The project, which was conceived by project
manager Julie Keehn and her husband, has been completed
largely by volunteers, including the town mayor.
