The document proposes reimagining Devonian Square at Ryerson University to improve the student experience. It outlines plans to pedestrianize the area, commit to design excellence, and intensify urban development. The reimagined space would provide increased student space, versatility, visual consistency, income generation, and a focal point for campus. Potential drawbacks include costs, permitting challenges, and community concerns. Comparable projects elsewhere have been successful in achieving similar goals.

The task was to gain 15 new followers for the Fuzzy Days, Noir Nights Twitter account. Using social learning theory and singling out techniques such as the "List" function of Twitter, this goal was achieved.
Adapted from an original blog post by the same name, this presentation covers the evolution of the cell phone from a practical innovation to an expression of our identities.

We chose to design a "viral" campaign around the Queen's University campus, directing students to a dummy website filled with dares. We wanted to examine the results of traditional vs web advertising.

The Roman Empire A Historical Colossus.pdfkaushalkr1407
The Roman Empire, a vast and enduring power, stands as one of history's most remarkable civilizations, leaving an indelible imprint on the world. It emerged from the Roman Republic, transitioning into an imperial powerhouse under the leadership of Augustus Caesar in 27 BCE. This transformation marked the beginning of an era defined by unprecedented territorial expansion, architectural marvels, and profound cultural influence.
The empire's roots lie in the city of Rome, founded, according to legend, by Romulus in 753 BCE. Over centuries, Rome evolved from a small settlement to a formidable republic, characterized by a complex political system with elected officials and checks on power. However, internal strife, class conflicts, and military ambitions paved the way for the end of the Republic. Julius Caesar’s dictatorship and subsequent assassination in 44 BCE created a power vacuum, leading to a civil war. Octavian, later Augustus, emerged victorious, heralding the Roman Empire’s birth.
Under Augustus, the empire experienced the Pax Romana, a 200-year period of relative peace and stability. Augustus reformed the military, established efficient administrative systems, and initiated grand construction projects. The empire's borders expanded, encompassing territories from Britain to Egypt and from Spain to the Euphrates. Roman legions, renowned for their discipline and engineering prowess, secured and maintained these vast territories, building roads, fortifications, and cities that facilitated control and integration.
The Roman Empire’s society was hierarchical, with a rigid class system. At the top were the patricians, wealthy elites who held significant political power. Below them were the plebeians, free citizens with limited political influence, and the vast numbers of slaves who formed the backbone of the economy. The family unit was central, governed by the paterfamilias, the male head who held absolute authority.
Culturally, the Romans were eclectic, absorbing and adapting elements from the civilizations they encountered, particularly the Greeks. Roman art, literature, and philosophy reflected this synthesis, creating a rich cultural tapestry. Latin, the Roman language, became the lingua franca of the Western world, influencing numerous modern languages.
Roman architecture and engineering achievements were monumental. They perfected the arch, vault, and dome, constructing enduring structures like the Colosseum, Pantheon, and aqueducts. These engineering marvels not only showcased Roman ingenuity but also served practical purposes, from public entertainment to water supply.

Embracing GenAI - A Strategic ImperativePeter Windle
Artificial Intelligence (AI) technologies such as Generative AI, Image Generators and Large Language Models have had a dramatic impact on teaching, learning and assessment over the past 18 months. The most immediate threat AI posed was to Academic Integrity with Higher Education Institutes (HEIs) focusing their efforts on combating the use of GenAI in assessment. Guidelines were developed for staff and students, policies put in place too. Innovative educators have forged paths in the use of Generative AI for teaching, learning and assessments leading to pockets of transformation springing up across HEIs, often with little or no top-down guidance, support or direction.
This Gasta posits a strategic approach to integrating AI into HEIs to prepare staff, students and the curriculum for an evolving world and workplace. We will highlight the advantages of working with these technologies beyond the realm of teaching, learning and assessment by considering prompt engineering skills, industry impact, curriculum changes, and the need for staff upskilling. In contrast, not engaging strategically with Generative AI poses risks, including falling behind peers, missed opportunities and failing to ensure our graduates remain employable. The rapid evolution of AI technologies necessitates a proactive and strategic approach if we are to remain relevant.

Vin explains that the Burnham quote was a driving force behind President Levy’s ‘Master Plan’ for Ryerson, which he proposed in 2006 (and began being implemented in 2008)
Vin explains that the master plan consists of three overarching goals. Includes a brief explanation of each goal. Ties into Alicia’s notes on “(image....)As Ryerson’s academic reputation and brand has evolved, so has the public realm of the campus. Signature elements of architectural design, urban landscaping, and a recent transformation of streetscapes are reshaping the downtown core. This is evident in three building projects - the Ryerson Athletics Centre at the Gardens, the Ryerson Gallery and Research Centre in the heart of campus, and a Student Learning Centre on the site of the iconic Sam the Record Man property on Yonge Street. These buildings project a modern and distinctively urban “vibe” of a university that is clearly on the move, ready and willing to innovate and collaborate for the benefit of their students.”
Vin opens slide by saying ‘…and it’s been working.” Mention the Image Arts Building, the new Athletics Facility at Maple Leaf Gardens, and the Student Learning Centre. Discuss how these new buildings all project Ryerson’s ‘state-of-the-art-brand’ But there is one glaring exception to this – no, I’m not talking about Kerr Hall – I’m talking about Devonian Square
As this picture comes up, Vin says “I mean… Devonain Square” (and switch to the next picture of the square)
As this image comes up, Vin says “Ryerson’s slogan states ‘Everyone makes a mark.’ Ask yourself, what mark is Devonian Square making?” -This segways into Alicia’s Rationale of the problem
Well to answer that question we need to understand how Devonian square was first ‘imagined’. Tracing back the history of Ryerson….
During this time the Ryerson campus had evolved into a spread of dislocated facilities.
Hence the conception of Devonian square on the corner of Victoria and Gould street in 1978.
The problem that arises from this first conception of Devonian square in 1978, goes back to the question Vin was asking, what mark is Devonian square making 33 years later for Ryerson?
The use of Devonian Pond during the winter as a skating rink is perhaps the best way that Ryerson presents this space to students and the community.
The other times, this space is quite an eye sore and looks a bit run down.
Is this too happy? Since the partial closing of Gould and Victoria Street, students have been taking their extra curricular performances, demonstrations, rallies and activities to the middle of the streets.
And with the newly developed Image Arts building and the Chang Building to either of its sides, and the other new buildings in development, Devonian square is no longer a cohesive space pulling this extrodinary campus together.
Hayley to introduce the idea of how we will re-imagine the space, led in by Alicia’s section.
