They are used for patients who have lost the ability to function normally and involve one-on-one training that may last weeks to months. While only about 4.8% of physical therapists work in rehabilitation settings nationally, the salaries are higher on average at $48,000 nationally for full-time positions working in rehabilitation. Patients of all ages are seen for a variety of diagnoses and conditions including trauma, stroke, infections, tumors, arthritis, amputations, burns, and post-surgery, with chronic older patients often needing less intensive longer term care and temporary younger patients more intensive short term care.
